When it comes to the black woman who, in my opinion, invented the term "diva," no one does mainstream media blitz like Diana Ross.
Truly.
On Jan. 16, the legendary Motown Records singer's long awaited new album, 'I Love You,' arrive on U.S. record shelves via Manhattan/EMI -- after being previously released overseas last fall.
So expect to see her promoting the dreamy opus.
The masterfully produced set was recorded at multiple studios in Southern California, New York and London. According to a spokesperson, the Academy Award nominated icon attended every session, from the initial demos to tracking, overdubs and mixing.
The album consists of 14 songs personally selected by Ross in appreciation of their timeless, classic expressions of love and romance. "When I was in the studio, sharing these songs, I was filled with strong emotion" Ross said. "These songs, these singers, these musicians and all my fans are a gift of love to me."The former Supremes frontwoman puts her special touch on memorable gems such as Marvin Gaye's "I Want You," Bill Withers' "A Lovely Day," The Drifters' "This Magic Moment," Paul McCartney's "I Will," Heatwave's "Always And Forever" and Hal David and Burt Bacharach's oft-covered 'The Look of Love."
Done up in her signature light, airy, whispery pitch, the album is easy listening at its finest.
All of the veteran singers from Rod Stewart to Chaka Khan, from Barry Manilow to Vesta have recorded cover albums over the past few years. It seems to be the latest trend as music listeners discover that what is "old is really new" and vice versa.
"Sometimes the trend works, sometimes it doesn't," notes noted biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli
.
"Even though Rod Stewart has had huge success with it, he sounds real craggy on standard songs -- very odd," he added. " Manilow works fairly well -- though his 60s album seems totally incomplete without any Motown songs on it."
"But Diana fits the mold perfectly," he added.
Through the years, Taraborrelli has chronicled the lives of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Grace, Cher and The Kennedys in tell-all tomes.
His 1989 expose on Ross, 'Call Her Miss Ross,' was a best-seller, and is considered the most definitive biography on the diva to date.
Two of my favorite tracks from the new album are Ross' wonderful rendition of "To Be Loved," which was written by Motown Records founder Berry Gordy and originally recorded by Jackie Wilson in 1958, and her melancholy version on "What About Love" composed by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray from the new Broadway musical 'The Color Purple,' performed by LaChanze and Elisabeth Withers Mendes.
The title track, "I Love You (That's All That Really Matters)," is a gentle ballad that I personally think is one of the most beautiful songs that I've heard in recent years.
Maybe it was all of that dreamy music or an excessive use of ProTools, but Diana Ross has never sounded better -- in recent years.
"Hers is a great album, actually -- her version of Paul McCartney's "I Will" is one of her best recordings -- ever!," Taraborrelli raved. "But it's no surprise. Look, she has been singing all kinds of songs since she was a kid. The Supremes sang Rodgers and Hart back in 1967, she did a 'Funny Girl' album in 1968., 'Ladys Sings the Blues' in 1971. There's no one as versatile as Diana Ross...she can do no wrong when it comes to her music."
Well, I wouldnt say that. But I do get his point.
So what exactly does she do better than anyone else, one may ask.
The answer: Dazzle the media.
There's something about the world legend -- once the big eyed girl from the Detroit projects -- that just continues to captivate us. Maybe it's the sheer fact that --up until her most recent legal run-ins-- she always epitomized what was a representation of success and stardom, glitz and glamour.
Perhaps.
But the legend lives on. And so does the media hold.
Next week, the near 63-year old songstress will embark on a full scale media tour, which includes live musical performances on 'Good Morning America,' 'Live with Regis & Kelly' and 'The Late Show with David Letterman' (Jan. 16). She is also confirmed to tape a segment on 'The Martha Stewart Show'(to air on Jan. 26) and sit down with James Lipton for 'Inside The Actor's Studio.' To add to all the frenzy, Taraborrelli's latest biography on Ross, titled 'Diana Ross: The Unauthorized Biography,' will be released next week in U.K., and is expected for U.S. release this spring.
And we thought this type of stuff was just reserved for the likes of Beyonce.
Ummmmmmmmmm, no.
Make way for The Originator!

Diana Ross is the Boss. her song 'Love Taught Me'.. will forever be the theme of my life.... This girl laid it down. and we still jammin to that pieceup in the club amongst her other collections with and without the Supreme's. I love me some Patti Labelle, but I bet she's feeling just a bit uneasy.... They have been rivals for years. Patty doesnt hide it either.... Patti was and is talented and can sing u into a frenzy....
But Diana always had that 'Star' appeal. that sex symbol thing going. She sung Good. but she also moved them hips, batted her eyelashes, open that mouth and grinned with all 32 .... She small and petite and she influenced fashion and the image of a hip-hop singer. not just soul. Congratulations to her... She looks great also. I would love to see a show with her Whitney and Brandy.

Diana Ross is an old "A" hole who oughta die or crawl back into the her old alcoholic bin.
One of the nastiest women who ever lived. She had some great song writers behind her and made her what she is MUSICALLY.
Other than that, she is a beast. Such a beast that Dreamgirls was written with her SPECIFICALLY in mind.
Read Mary Wilson's biography. Read All That Glittered. This was written by someone who worked very closely with the Supremes for years. Read Berry Gordy's 1st wife's (Raeoma) account on the early Motown years and Gordy starting out as a pimp. Read all of the biography's of the Motown greats.
This woman is a horrible DISGRACE. She ruined her own tour in the late 90's in order to keep the original Supremes out of the limelight---something even ex-pimp Gordy told her would kill the tour.
But sour-assed Diana did it anyway. Can you imagine Paul McCartney having a BEATLES REUNION without the other REMAINING Beatles at the time? Harrison wasn't dead yet.
My hat is off to the OTHER Motown groups who made Motown what it was and who don't get as much press as DIANASAUR. My hat is off to Cindy Birdsong (who replaced the GREAT FLORENCE BALLARD) and Mary Wilson, who still works hard and keeps the SUPREMES history ALIVE today.

Dear "Me Again" who posted a comment at 7:32pm on January 18th: do you kiss your mother with that mouth? The good thing about your disgusting, distasteful and distinctively narrowminded garbage of the english language that you've passed off as a "comment" here is that you're obviously so OBSESSED with this woman that everything written about her...yo' dumb ass has actually bought and read! (Lord..you even read Tony Turner's book.) Your problem is the same as all the rest who have one with Diana Ross: yall simply can't take her. She was "too much"..too confident, too talented, too fierce: this girl from the ghetto who gave Florence money to save her house when in foreclosure, who refuses to act like a "bitch" and feed into Mary Wilson's catfight eggings in the media, who pissed off Cindy Birdsong so bad that swen Cindy came to see her show at the Hollwood Palace Theatre WITH THE OTHER SURVIVING SUPREMES EXCEPT THE VINDICTIVE AND SPITEFUL MARY WILSON..that Cindy posed arm and arm with Diana for pictures. You really are an idiot and if children reflect their parents, then your mama must be an idiot too. Baldnsexynaz@yahoo.com if you need to reach me.

Only Diana Can... This is what is called a true superstar she has excelled in every genre of entertainment, theatre,- (she had a sold out concert on braodway and was given a tony), movies, academy award (nomination) concert halls, and televsion /movie and concert specails- (golden globe nomination) there are only a few people who can make this claim ..black, asain, latin, or caucasion. Regardles of what many people think of her due to rumors .. no one really knows her.. she is that kind of old school superstar. glamourous, mysterious, powerful, wealthy and talented. You have to give her props for knocking the door down for many female vocalist today I remember when Diana was the only black woman you saw on the cover of a magazine, in photo spreads, selling out worlwide concert venues and considered the most beautiful and stylish woman in the world. And good for her nothing has changed. She proved this on letterman the othernight oh my gosh what glamour even the way she walks and lets not forget the impeccable speaking voice. And the new Cd is absoluely beautiful....

A REAL LEGEND and a LADY is none other than MISS TINA TURNER. Works hard, gives credit where credit is due. Doesn't stomp others in the ground or collaborate to keep others from rising to the top. Realizes that being spiritual and doing on to others as you would have them do on to you is better than all the limelight and kiss-assing in the world.
Nobody, not Patty Labelle, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Donna Summer---not ANY of these ladies are known for the UNGRACIOUS and truly MEAN-SPIRITED psychotic behavior of Beast-Ross-to-you.

Thanks Baldnsexynaz for your comments concerning this person who calls themselves Me Again. It sounds like the only ASS HOle on this Blog is Me Again. You know, usually I do not even respond to sheer ignorgance but Me Again was so out in left field & obviously did not really do any real research that I felt obliged to enlighten him or her. Perhaps Me Again should read Maxine Ballard Jenkins new book (Florence Ballard's Sister) to get a better perspective on Mary Wilson's oppurtunist account of the Supremes. Even the new book "A Lifetime to get here, An American Dream" may be helpful. I guess what really bothered me about Me Again is that this ididot's comments were sooo negative & one sided about the ONE woman whose "CrossOver" appeal & voice made it possible for the other Motown acts to find cross over appeal with a white audience> For Me Again to even mention her relationship with Berry Gordy & Smokey for that matter, things that happened over 40 years ago,& to take these things so out of context in the present, is so ridiculous, one would think that Diana Ross did something personal to Me Again!!! Perhaps Me Again is really an alias that Mary Wilson is using (after all she has no other real talent or career other than riding off the coat tails of Diana Ross still today) I just don't get it when I hear these type of comments regarding Miss Ross reflecting on her personality when she was still a young girl(and Me again did not even get those facts right) rather than her talent, & versatility, not just in the music world, being able to sing ANY genre of music, but also in the Acting World. Ross is an Icon & legend & rightfully so. She truly helped to open doors for African American Artists overall, & in a big way (obviously, this is why even in 2007 they are twisiting a movie called DREAMGIRLS to reflect the character Deena Jones into a Diana Ross like image ) & it just really rubs me wrong when ignorance & blatant disrespect & rudeness rears its ugly head. Unfortunatly, if I thought that this kind of ugliness would die when this person called Me Again died, I would probably wish for Me Again's death as he or she has so immaturely said about Diana Ross. In fact, I would probably volunteer to pull the switch or squeeze the trigger or tighten the noose.
