Next week, former 'Vibe' magazine editor Emil Wilbekin will take part in a week long celebration of Black History Month entitled 'Inspired in New York.'
According to the revered fashion media personality, who serves as curator for the festivities, 'Inspired' will pay respect to film, music, art, culture, fashion and literature.
"The concept behind [the events] was to celebrate the creativity, vision, and style of African American New Yorkers though culture," Wilbekin shared with The BV Newswire. "As a culture mover, I wanted it to be about past, present, and future."
Running from Feb. 11 through Feb. 16, some highlights will include MTV's very own Sway hosting an "black tie, blue jeans" opening night affair benefiting the Thurgood Marshall Fund; acclaimed actor Malik Yoba showcasing works of four new Black filmmakers; Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland and Marley Marl co-hosting a tribute to hip-hop super-producer DJ Premier featuring liver performances by Talib Kweli and Big Daddy Kane; best-selling author Brian Keith Jackson presenting a contemporary art exhibit; a hip-pop fashion show and a poetry slam competition.
"Black History Month is the perfect time to pay respect to film, music, art, fashion, and literature though the modern venue of a taste-maker lounge," he continued. "It's reminiscent of the salons of the Harlem Renaissance, but remixed downtown with deejays and a Bohemian vibe."
The events are sponsored by the Bombay Sapphire gin brand.

Like Emil, I too am inspired and seek to inspire and motivate others. Unfortunately, too few of us get involved. In the spirit of Black History Month, I offer my contribution, a brief presentation which shares the historical significance of Africa and the African American Journey. I hope you enjoy.
