Fantasia Barrino's new CD may not have gone gold yet, but she's laughing all the way to the bank.
Ticket sales for Broadway's 'The Color Purple' have soared since the 'American Idol' winner announced that she was playing the lead role on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' last month.
With the splashy announcement came Barrino belting out the musical's torch song 'I'm Here,' composed by Brenda Russell, Stephen Bray and Allee Willis.
It didn't hurt that "Tasia," as she is affectionately becoming known as, also appeared on the ratings juggernaut 'American Idol' for a similar promotion.
Combined, both shows garnered nearly 45 million viewers.
And the major mainstream media exposure has reflected in a rejuvenated box-office for the Winfrey-produced theatrical spectacle ... to the tune of $2 million in advance sales, reports entertainment industry bible 'Variety.'
"I had seen the movie," Barrino comented about 'Purple,' "but it's such an inspirational play. I was crying. I was saying, 'Oh, Lord, I hope I'm not the only one crying!' "
"It's one of those plays that ... when you leave, you will have your head up, and you will be like, 'You know what? I'm going through some things, but that's all right.' "
Marking her official theatrical debut, the church-reared Barrino -- currently doing rehearsals for 'Purple' in Chicago -- is contracted for her stint on The Great White Way through the fall.
"I am proud and honored to welcome Fantasia – such an authentic, strong, original performer – to 'The Color Purple' family," the show's lead producer Scott Sanders told The BV Newswire today. "She embodies the perseverance, faith, and love that has become synonymous with the character of Celie."
"It's such a powerful role," Barrino said. "She went through so many things. She had people telling her she wasn't this, she wasn't that, she was ugly. But she still kept a smile on her face. And at the end, she said, 'You know what? I may be poor. I may be ugly. But I'm here.' And I'm ready. I've got so much to let out, and I feel like I can take all of that and put it out there on the stage."
On April 10, she will officially take her bow at the Broadway Theatre for the very first time.

Before you attempt to degrade someone, please learn the proper way to write and format a sentence. "How the hell they gonna", and "they must gonna have" is a reflection of your on illiteracy. So, why don't you call Fantasia and see if you can get the same hookup that she got to help her, to help youself. It would help society rid it's self of pure ignorancy!!!!!!!! Smile :) and claim your award for asshole of the year, you deserve it. Love Ya & Take Care

This is the problem with our race as it is. We tear ourselves down and prove them right. She has came over many obstacles as we all have had and are still going through. However she is getting through her roles is a small thing. The fact that she got noticed and made it through is an accopmlishment. I saw the lifetime movie and I was a little disturbed at how she was protrayed, but could it be an act or it it reality? There are still some performers out there who will not admit their issues, I commend her for that whether it was a ploy or not it got attention for others to acknowlegde their fears and seek help. So something good came out of that.

Robert, I have to say well done what you stated we can never over come now and to have people call others out of their name is not nice. Keep the joy up because can touch others and don't know it.

First I want to say to Fantasia that I think that this is a good role for you. Yeah, she said that she could not read but if you remember at the end of her movie she was reading a book to her baby. As for the "BITCH" part. I think that he needs to address what he is going through. I will tell you this:
B=Beautiful
I=Intelligent
T=Talented
C=Talented
H=Human Being
that is the real meaning of BITCH.

Fantasia,
My family and I have always been fans of yours since American Idol. I am so proud of you and your accomplishments. Continue to strive for excellence. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you will succeed over and above that you could ever think!
As for you "Ulich DeezKnutz", its people like you that bring the human race down. If she was illerate at one time "So What"! Look at all she's accomplished so far! Start embracing sisters and stop calling them out of their names!

I saw the play last year. With or without Fantasia, the play is a great production and I congratulate and wish all the cast members and behind the scenes folks much success. I don't see Fantasia making it any better but of course well known names are often a box office draw.
