Will art imitate life for last year's 'American Idol' hopeful Paris Bennett?
Maybe.
'MTV Radio Networks' is reporting that the 17-year-old vocal powerhouse is prepping for her film debut.
"It's gonna be from an Off-Broadway play 'Mama, I Want to Sing' and they are in the works of creating a movie screenplay for it," she revealed. "If it does get shot, it will be shot in April and I'm excited to see it."
In 1983, broadcast veteran Vy Higginson co-wrote, produced and directed the gospel musical, which became a phenomenon and ran for eight consecutive years with over 2,000 performances at East Harlem's Heckscher Theater.
The show's landmark success and gospel infused storyline single-handedly shaped a new generation of theatre-goers and was presented in venues worldwide -- even making a star out of a young, high octave ranging songstress named Desiree Coleman.
The story, which was based on the life and career of soul music pioneer Doris Troy (Higginson's sister) attracted the likes of Chaka Khan to star in its European run.
Bennett herself is from gospel lineage -- Ann Nesby, her grandmother is a founding member and frontwoman for the internationally renowned outfit Sounds of Blackness.
She said she is eager to really absorb the project, which should see the light of day in 2008 and will be reportedly distributed by Fox.
"I am learning about my character, actually the main character in the play is Doris, so I will eventually become her and it will be something crazy to see."
Bennett, who became a fan favorite as one of the Top 12 finalists last year, has plans to release her debut album, titled 'Princess P,' next month. The lead single is titled 'Ordinary Love.'

Paris I am sooooo happy for you -- you are my American Idol even though you did not win. For someone of your age to master the diva torch singers you definitely have my vote! You have a beautiful voice reminiscent of the divas of the 40's and 50's -- Billie H, etc., and I would love to see you tackle some Carmen McCrae -- you go gurl...I'm in your fan corner:-)

Congrats to U Paris!!!!! I've seen "Mama, I want to sing" 4 times when it was @ the Heckscher Theater & was also @ the 20th Anniversary @ William Institutional CME Church. I wish U all the luck in whatever U do & with a Grandma like Mrs. Nesby, U will go far. As for Erin on the site saying U was annoying, I guess she doesn't know good singing when she hear it, but than again, she's entitle to her own opionion.
Paris, Keep God in whatever U do

Paris, God has truly blessed you. I can truly say a lot, I first heard you sing when you were 4yrs old at Macedonia in Rockford. I use to call Ann Nesby my play mom and Jamecia Bennet,(Paris's Mom), is still one of the best alto's of all time. So a third Generation singing Great is amazing to me. Do your thing and keep God first. STAY HUMBLE.

I have to agree with the first comment, I too saw the play many many years ago and the music is awesome,I
still play the soundtrack cassette. I think Paris with her voice is the best selection to "sing" the part, and pray her acting skills are up to par.

Alright! I loved Paris on Idol and have been waiting to see her and hear that beautiful voice again! And as to Erin's comment I guess she doesn't know a sweet soul when she sees one.
