For a man who just celebrated his 80th birthday a few weeks ago, Sidney Poitier is having the best year ever.
And it's only late March.
Thanks --in a very large part -- to the very public admiration of media mogul Oprah Winfrey, the first black male Academy Award winner achieved a career first and landed on the top of the 'New York Times' bestseller's list with his seven year old inspirational memoir 'The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography.'
And it was just recently announced that the cinematic trailblazer is among a group of internationally acclaimed leaders and achievers who will be honored for their lifetime accomplishments with the 28th Annual Common Wealth Awards of Distinguished Service.
Veteran broadcast journalist Cokie Roberts, British novelist Ian McEwan, and former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski, and Poitier, will all receive a shared prize of $200,000 at the Common Wealth Awards ceremony April 28 at the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Common Wealth Awards of Distinguished Service were first presented in 1979 by the Common Wealth Trust, created under the will of the late Ralph Hayes, an influential business executive and philanthropist. Hayes conceived the awards to reward and encourage the best of human performance worldwide. In their 28-year history, the Common Wealth Awards have conferred $4 million in prize money to 161 honorees of international renown. The awards are funded by the Common Wealth Trust.
Past winners include human rights leader Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former statesman Henry Kissinger and author Toni Morrison, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, children's television icon, the late Fred "Mister" Rogers, actress Meryl Streep; television journalist Walter Cronkite; and World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee.

Mr. Poitier and I share the same birthdate and I've always had a special admiration for him. I've followed his career for many years and have enjoyed all of his movies, " Cooley High, Lilies of the Field, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and They Call Me Mr. Tibbs" and was elated to watch him accept his Oscar with such grace & dignity. Ms. Oprah Winfrey deserves a big sincere "Thank You" for recognizing his.

Sidney Poitier, A man of dignity who uses the way he was reared to overcome all obstacles and stumbling block in his way. I am so proud of him and all the other African American who have paved the way for us. They did all the hard work. Now as we honor them, we should look up to then and in still the values in our lives and that of our children and grandchildren so they too can make a difference, for generations to come.
Mr. Poitier you and all those who are here and for those gone before has given me the foundation and the back bone to be strong and to in still the caribbean values in own family.
I believe like you and others used your strength, discipline and respect for self and humanity stood up for your rights and rightfully so that allowed you to grow and make a difference.
Much, much respect to you Sir.
As a child i looked up to you and i believed anything was possible. Today I smile and i thank you and my parents and grandparents for being firm,at times hard but now as an adult i look back and thanked them.( coming from the caribbean you know it was never easy)
respect,
Michele C.

younita ho,comment #7, in regard to your comment the only thing i can say is ignorance is bliss....Sidney Poitier is great man of his time and obviously of today. He has broken so many barriers and stereotypes that was set forth in hollywood as far as afro-american actors are concerned....regardless of what race you are he is someone you should respect and admire...but i can see by your cited movie and your lack of knowledge as to who this distinquished gentleman is your someone not worth entertaining.....
