Russell Simmons sure knows how to pull out all the stops.
For his latest tome, the motivational business book 'Do You! 12 Laws to Access Power in You To Achieve Happiness and Success,' the hip-hop entrepreneur called on the man pop culture knows as a great business mind: real estate tycoon and media personality Donald Trump.
In the book -- due out April 24 from Gotham Books -- the lone star of NBC's fading reality series 'The Apprentice' was commissioned to the write the Foreword.
And in true Trump fashion, he knows how to seize the moment -- to talk about himself.
"If you've spent any time following my own career, you know success is a subject that I take very seriously," he starts off. "I not only work very hard to be successful in my own life, but to help other people become successful as well."
Such humility.
But all is not lost on Trump. Because he's so publicity savvy (sans the Rosie O'Donnell smut-fest earlier this year), he's a good draw for mainstream middle America impressed by his business prowess.
"Endorsing someone else's views on success is not something that I do lightly," The Donald continued. "When Russell asked me to write the foreword for this book, I said yes without any hesitation. Because if there's one person I believe can show you a path toward true success, it's Russell Simmons."
Simmons, who founded and built the Def Jam and Phat Farm empires and is now a finance czar in his own right, was quite smart with this tactic.
The 312-page 'Do You!' -- dedicated to his daughters Ming Lee and Aoki Lee ("and their fabulous and wonderful mother, Kimora Lee [Simmons]") may actually sell.
It teaches a very simple lesson – by tapping into the power inside you, you can not only get all the things you want in life, but most important, you can enjoy them too.
Simmons breaks down his message in a series of 12 Laws, which include: See Your Vision And Stick With It; Always Do You; Get Your Mind Right; Stop Frontin' And Start Today; Never Less Than Your Best; Surround Yourself With The Right People; There Are No Failures Only Quitters; Science Of Success, Plant The Good Seeds; You Can Never Get Before You Give; Successful People Stay Open To Change; Be Powerful, Be Heard; and Spit Truth To Power.
"When people ask me what business I'm currently in, the first thing I tell them is that I am in the business of Giving Back," he said. "You can imagine that I've either met or personally know many of the richest people in the world, many of whom simply aren't happy. So it's important for people to understand not only how to achieve success, but how to enjoy it, which is what my new book is all about."
Most recently, Simmons have dedicated much of his time and effort to helping establish the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network's financial empowerment efforts.
So this 'Do You!' is right on time.

Proud Black Woman..You should have been a guest panelist on Oprah. You have been the only one that I have heard say outright what I have been thinking and saying to anyone who would listen.I am disappointed that even though Oprah had this discussion forum on her show their was not one mention of black women also taking responsibility for some of their own actions that cause many black men to see them in such a negative light.I am also not condoning the behavoir I am saying it is unfair to blame all of it on hip-hop and the black man.Thank you once again.

Omega, obviously u were not listening to the Oprah show correctly. People seem to have selective hearing when they don't like what they hear. Anyway, I respect Russell Simmons to the upmost (I'm a true hip hop fan), he's done a lot for hip hop. Let's face it, the music for the most part, has made a turn for the worst. Not everybody's reality is negative all the time, and if it is... sorry. Just know that there are positive ways to express anger, frustration and downpression. I'm a great mom, sister, wife and friend. RESPECT me. Please people pray more it does bring enlightenment... you'll SEE. Not that you'll read this, but good luck Russell! The whole world is watching... help revive TRUE hip hop, if you remember what that is.

One of the arguments that is being used by hip hop is that hip hop artists have to express themselves by calling their mothers sisters and black women negative names because they live in tough times.
Baloney, those who lived prior to this generation were able to express themselves, and succeed financially, without the use of vulgarity. Ever heard of the Smokey Robinson, the Supremes, Temptations, Marvin Gaye Gladys Knight, and 100's of others, Johnny Mathis, James Brown ?
And several hip hop artist are doing just fine without calling their mothers, and sisters these horrific names.
I see the problem as a moral breakdown, and a sell out for a few $, The bible ask this question What will it profit you to gain $$$$ the world, but lose your soul ?

I am a 52 year old Black woman born in the Bahamas, even when I was a child, I never considered to be on the bottom, and I still feel that way, our thoughts are the product of our future and what life holds for us. We speak our situation to our future, and when I say that not one or anyone who thinks that they are better than me, I refuse to accept that. As for the rap music and the hip hop music that is out there in media today I am not a bitch or a whore, I am simply a Mother, Grand-Mother, Daughter, and most of all I am a Child of God. People are going to talk, and in this country, you have freedom of speech. When my son's was coming up I refuse to have them play that music in my home, because what they listen to it becomes a part of them and they have the utmost respect for women, and anyone. All this fussing and carrying on about what women are being called don't make any sence to me at all. If you know who you are then you shouldn't have a problem. There are more serious things such as babies going hungry, a war, and men and women committing adultry, men not providing food and shelter for their children, young children having babies, and the spread of Aids. What we need to do is come together as Christ would want us to do, and start helping that Mother who has so many children, and the elderly who's children has turned their backs on them, and don't have time for them, and most of all bringing prayers back into the schools. When you take man's law and desrespect God's law there can only be nothing but distruction. We live in one of the greatest country in the world, and we find the least important things to be concerned about, such as the stars and how much money they spend on their weddings, and so forth, we all are one wether we came here from another country or not, we are not responsible for where the Lord choose for us to be born, we are still all his children. So my brothers and sister out there be a blessing to someone along the way wether you know them or not and you too will be blessed.

Russell Simmons has caught up with what mature black folks have been saying for many years. Gangster Rap music needs to go underground. Lets get back to real music that talks about love, joy and harmony, not violence and the abuse of black girls and black woman.
