Beyonce and Rihanna better make way.
There's a new R&B chanteuse on the block.
And she has the power of Jay-Z behind her.
Chrisette Michelle is Def Jam's newest signing and will release her soulful, jazz-influenced debut album, 'I Am,' on June 19. According to a label rep, the set features collaborations with 10-time Grammy Award winner Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, as well as hit-makers, will. i. am, John Legend and Salaam Remi.
The 24-year-old Long Island native, who has recently appeared on albums by Nas and Jay-Z, knocked label brass off their feet during a personal audition. Even Antonio "L.A." Reid has taken notice. "When Chrisette Michele enters a room, the room becomes a better place," he said.
And the buzz is building. Four of her tracks are available on her MySpace page, with one, titled 'Your Joy' -- a touching ode to her father -- has been heralded as the "Single of the Week" on itunes on May 15.
Though she doesn't want to be stereotyped as a Neo-Soul artists, comparisons to some of the biggest names in the genre still occur. She's not fazed by it.
"I'm excited about finding my place amongst young composers like Alicia Keys and Jill Scott," she said. "My goal from the moment I was signed, was to create a seamless album that mixes soul and pop in a way that will have people coming back again and again."
National audiences will get a chance to experience Michelle's flow when she heads out on a month-long tour with platinum-selling Neo-Soul crooner Musiq Soulchild, beginning July 6 in Baltimore. Tour dates below.

I sit here laughing . . .
The media goes too far sometimes! I have heard the rumors about the "Ring The Alarm" tribute to Rihanna and the "Umbrella" tribute to Beyonce'. Beyonce' knows that Rihanna is an artist under Jay Z's auspicies and they have to communicate. When "B" wakes up in the morning and flicks on the light in the bathroom--she is BEYONCE', R&B/Pop Goddess! Rihanna is a beautiful woman, but if she and Jay are secretly having a relationship she needs to back out very quietly. Hurricane Beyonce will crush her!
Beyonce is already a music and fashion icon. Rihanna has been out for some years, but not on "B's" level. Now as far as the new girl goes, I am going to check out her music on "Crack" Space, but I am offended that she does not want to be classified as Neo Soul. "Yo sis, what is wrong with Neo-Soul?" In my opinion, Neo-Soul is the feel good music of the century! Yall, when is Erykah going to drop a new CD? Let me know at winfredwarrick@aol.com! (LOL)
"I know what it is Chrisette, you think that you have to be barefoot and somewhat connected to Africa to be Neo-Soul!" Yeah right! Erykah, Jill, Jaguar, Musiq, India and Corinne (Bailey Rae) are trendsetters!
Because I am offended, let me build my defense! Here is a word to the wise, your name is too long, people won't remember your first name (Chrisette) and you should have lied about your age. Nineteen would have been more appropriate, that would have added 10 years to your career. Don't believe me, ask Lil Wayne and Golden Brooks. Never say that you don't want to be "Neo" because consumers are getting down to the bare essentials now and the way that the world is---simple is the "new black."
To all of my incense burning, dread lock wearing, coffee shop hanging, poetry reading, natural soap bathing, "hemp" using, vegetarian eating people; you know now who's record to buy from the bootleg man instead of FYE! LOL . . .
Ciao for now,

I think that a lot of the comments here are crazy. Beyonce doesn't seek out attention...she does what she does best...ENTERTAIN. It's the people who put all the emphasis around her and "play" her out. Beyonce is certainly talented and it shows. Everybody needs somebody to get ahead but the drive and dedication comes from within. There's not an artist out there today who didn't have a helping hand to get where they're at today and Chrisette will be no different. Chill out wit' hatin all the time...keep ya game tight and let these artist give us what we want...GREAT PERFORMANCES, LONGIVITY, and ORIGINALITY...and they're doin' the damn thing!

Yo #6! (NO DISRESPECT INTENDED)
Anita Baker is raising her family and still performs.
Angie Stone is a writer and dealing with a dibilitating sickness which she has under control
D'Angelo has had some substance abuse issues and will be returning to the game shortly.
African Americans always put each other down. When a white artist goes on hiatus, THEY are just resting! When WE take a little break, WE have dropped off!
Ciao . . .
