"I told Steven Spielberg I couldn't be in his film... I wasn't kissing a woman. I regret it because it was just acting. She (Shug) was in the tub, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. So after I saw the movie, I said, 'Maybe I shouldn't have gotten so nervous about doing something that's acting.' I should have shut up and just done the screen test and maybe I would have been Shug Avery."
-- R&B diva Patti LaBelle about her regrets for not taking on a starring role in 'The Color Purple.'

for someone whos always around the gay community and have such a huge gay fan base patti sure sounds a bit homophobic with that statement. just my two cents.

Well Patti you snooze you lose. Plus, the woman that played the part did an excellent job. I couldn't see Patti doing it anyway.

Wow, I didn't know she was up for that role. That really would've been something because Ms. Patti can sang!, Margaret Avery was just lip-synching those music parts but she can act. That really would've been something if she had done it. I don't think it was homophobic of her to say that, she's from Philly-she's keepin it real. And what's this about Christian values? I thought that was funny for somebody to say that. I know Ms. Patti has taken some chances, she did a duet with Frank Sinatra, now that's outside the box. She should've been on American Idol because well duh, It's Patti. She did okay in that one Gospel movie she was in, all 5 minutes so I don't know if the acting is really her type of thing. Now she's doing gospel and she tore up the Gospel Awards a few months back, that was the only reason why I saw the repeat on Tv 1.

Pattie, You did the right thing for you at this time. Don't second guess yourself, usually your first thought is the right decision. Bless you for being real. It's not homophobic, it's life...it's being real...it's being true to who you are and how you feel.
