"I told Steven Spielberg I couldn't be in his film... I wasn't kissing a woman. I regret it because it was just acting. She (Shug) was in the tub, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. So after I saw the movie, I said, 'Maybe I shouldn't have gotten so nervous about doing something that's acting.' I should have shut up and just done the screen test and maybe I would have been Shug Avery."
-- R&B diva Patti LaBelle about her regrets for not taking on a starring role in 'The Color Purple.'

The movie was better off without her. She couldn't act well enough at the time anyway. And 20 years later, she's "regretting" something so minor in her stellar career... Hmmm. Seems Patti not "being grateful" for the blessings of fame fortune & long health she has. Shug Avery has not had near the glory & constant praises Patti gets/has gotten, the self-absorbed TV shows, awards, celebrity friends networked, sponsored products for sale, & on & on. Goodness, if Patti isn't happy with all she has now, then snatching that bit of movie glory 20 years ago from another deserving black true actress would not have made her anymore satisfied today. When is enough - enough? Greed is not good. Patti should be humble for the multitude of blessings she has, and rejoice that her decision helped the career of another woman.

First of all. . .Kimmy - was it really necessary to call her a "B"? Secondly, to Patti, I agree with I PRESS completely. As a wanna-be thespian (that's ACTRESS, not lesbian) that is where I would draw a BIG LINE. Pass,uh-oh, no way. . .thanks for thinking of me, but no thanks. Besides, the cast at that time was of primarily unknowns at the time. I think if Patti had been in the role it quite possibly would not have been the same. She very well may have overshadowed the rest. Besides her career has not suffered from that pass.

You all know I'm not shy about going against the grain.
However, I have to go with mass agreement. I think Patti did what was best for her at the time. We all have those moments of "coulda, woulda, should". However, it is said that when one door closes The Lord opens another. In the end many more doors opened for Patti.Nothing against Margaret Avery, but the she only did was "Fish that Saved Pittsburg"( remember that crazy basketball movie with Dr. J?) and a couple fo tv roles. None of that worked out and truthfully she is not that good of an actress. So she needed the break more than Patti. Once again , nothing against Ms. Avery, but it seems like she didn't do much with her break while Ms. Patti is "Livin'it Up".So I think the "regret" Patti is feeling is just the moments pause.

Well we all know now that this diva has regrets. But she should not look into the past. Look to the future. Maybe she could be Shug in the Broadway play or the travelling performance.

She did the right thing by taking a standard. It shouldn't be two women kissing acting a role or not. God will reward her for taking a stand. You are with God whole heartly or you are lukewarm. Don't bow down to the enemy. Gifts, money, etc. blinds the wise.

Patti, never regret what you chose not to do. Don't let Hollywood cause you to lose your soul. Many people look up to you. You are a Christian, do not compromise your standards for this world.
Love you much
