Move over Teena Marie!!!
A new white woman is dominating the urban music scene.
And unlike Madonna, Christina Aguilera and Pink, she has the nerve to be British!
A real Brit, Madge.
And I'm not talking about the blond-haired, blue-eyed, black brother loving Joss Stone, either.
It's Amy Winehouse -- a brassy broad who's living up to her last name with much buzzed about public forays with alcoholic beverages.
Off the strength of her groovey and infectious singles 'Rehab,' and 'You Know I'm No Good,' the acclaimed British singer/songwriter has landed in the No. 1 spot on 'Billboard's Top R&B/Hip--Hop Albums chart with her gold selling American debut 'Back to Black.'
Yes.
Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums; beating out the likes of brand new releases by Rihanna, T-Pain, Fabolous and last week's debut of neo-soul newcomer Chrisette Michele.
What a perfect ending to Black Music Month.
The charismatic singer and tabloid mainstay has been making a name for herself over the past few months with an all-out media blitz and an aggressive radio airplay campaign.
On the heels of two major magazine covers ('Rolling Stone,' and 'Spin'), the English music wunderkind won two MOJO Awards (named "Woman of 2006" and winning the first ever 'Song of the Year' award for her smash hit single, 'Rehab').
Her American record label, Universal Republic, calls her signature brand "torrid but textured R&B."
I say it's old school soul fused retro pop ditties with a no holds barred lyricism, which comes across as a combination of Macy Gray, cocaine, Lauryn Hill, lithium with a dash of John Legend's two albums as a backdrop.
And the music buying public is just eating it all up.
Scorching hot remixes of her two singles have attracted the likes of hip-hop's finest, including Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah and Pharoahe Monch.
On her own, 'Back to Black' has sold more than 2.5 million copies globally, and is expected to cross the platinum-selling status mark within the next few weeks in the states.
For those who don't know: the 24-year-old Winehouse (real name) was born to an English family with a history of jazz musicians and grew up listening to a wide array of music, including Teena Marie, Busta Rhymes, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Mahalia Jackson, The Ronettes, The Shangri-las, The Shirelles, Sarah Vaughan, Minnie Ripperton, Dinah Washington, and Frank Sinatra.
Growing up in the suburb of Southgate, North London, she founded a short-lived amateur rap group called Sweet 'n' Sour at the age of 10. She, being known as Sour, later described the group as "the little white Jewish Salt-N-Pepa."
Love that.
She's planning a return to the states after a closely followed string of sold-out European shows on two festivals - the August 4 "V Festival" in Washington, DC, and Chicago's Lollapalooza on Aug. 5.
Winehouse's much anticipated end-of-summer tour kicks off at New York City's Central Park Summer Stage on Sept. 12, with a show the following day - Sept. 13 - in Upper Darby, PA.
She's also expected at the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX on September 15, with stops in included in Los Angeles on September 18 and 19, San Francisco on Sept. 21 and 22, Seattle on Sept. 25, Minnesota on Sept. 28, and pulling into Chicago on Sept. 29 - with more dates to be announced.
So get out those debit cards and buy tickets to see Amy Winehouse get loose.
If you can't wait for the show, please-please-please check out this OUTRAGEOUS video-clip below of Amy Winehouse and former "popera" singer Charlotte Church desecrating Michael Jackson's classic hit 'Beat It.'

For all you tone death MF's. Amy WineHouse can not sing! like number 38 said. Seems like to me she was so ripped so couldn't even hold a note. Listen I'm so tried of black people always tryin' to make excuses for some no talented white person who went and took singing lesson to learn how to sing and act black to get famous. And then drop the blackness and make rude comments about us, like ie., Elvis Presley, Emimen when they make it off our backs. We created and invented rock and roll. But now and days it's so-called considered white music. I remember when rap came on the scene. White critics would say " things like it's jungle music and it won't last". Now their children roll up in a car blastin' 50 cent. Look "black people", we are a very creative race, however, because we don't take more pride in our culture and hang on to history. We allow almost everything we do to slip away. Then still can't get no justice. Ever seen a black person own a chinese resturant? Does anybody feel me? If a singer is good then she good. No matter what race! However how many black girl have crossed over into rock and how many rock critics are calling her the next "Rose". How in heck can you people compare this girl to Teena marie, and for cryin out loud Areatha! I guess she a Shaka Chan and Whitney all rolled into one? I'm in favor of marketing and promotion, but don't get too twisted. If ya don't watch out they'll steal R&B and Rap music. Then where will all of you supposed "music has no color", be?
Peace
CeeCee

Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald,Teena Marie,J-Timberlake, Robin Thicke,Average White Band, The BG's, John B.,...hell...Paul Wall...If you love soulmusic...it doesn't matter who sings it. Your soul isn't prejudice....listen to that and leave your eyes out of it. This is coming from a more than proud blackman.

First of all, for all of you out here making inaccurate statements and criticism regarding the issue at hand need to know this...For decades, Black/R&B/Soul, or whatever you want to label it, but, to me just call it music, has for the most part, primarliy been supported and purchased via White audiences. Especially, nowadays. Majority of consumers for HIP HOP are White and/or Asian WORLD WIDE!! So, as far as which society or race supports what type of artist or music genre is irrelevant with respect to Amy Winehouse or any other "white" artist like Robin Thicke, etc., Or, whomever else is branching into the R&B or HIP HOP genre of music as an artist. For example, M&M has been accepted, for the MOST part, by everyone. He's real, authentic and extremely talented...Robin Thicke is talented...Hall & Oates, Tina Marie held there own back in the day...Just to name a few...Nevertheless, they all were and are embraced by everyone, especially blacks when the talent speaks for itself and there's not so much HYPE about being some new white this & that like some "great white hope". Music is music and anyone with the gift should express themselves. Minus all the fake image and crap. Now, not knocking anyone, but we all know that MAXWELL's spot was taken over by Robin Thicke....Unfortunaltely for him, Maxwell, and/or his quad/label, for whatever reason, took too long to get him back out there to maintain his spot. Matter of fact, mostly everyone who heard Robin's recent ballard on radio, excluding anyone who copped Robin's CD and could plainly see it was Robin and not Maxwell, thought at first that it was a new single from Maxwell. Let's just keep it real. And, I bet you Robin's squad/label new this and knew they'd intercept MAxwell's demagraphic/fan base. All whom love the silky falsetto vocals on top of smoothe R&B...Ight??!! And, I'm sorry, but, this Amy Winehouse is NOTHING like Tina Marie was in Tina's prime....Tina was a TRUE vocalist. At least up until she fell into the drugs and allowed her career to slip away. I've heard Amy before. And it was other than this terrible performance on this video blog, too. But, if you want to make it a white or black issue, then here you go. My girl Christina A....Now, SHE CAN BLOW..SANG her face off. So it ain't JUST about white or black. But, Amy Winehouse IS NOT on the same level as Christina A. And Amy is getting all her love because she is white with this unique dark image about her doing heart felt deep lyrical soulful music sounding like a wannabe Lauren Hill, etc.. But, Yo, Amy can't sing!! She sounds like drunk 99% of the time. Like some hung over drug head with weak vocals. Barely able to perform live compared to her studio/overproduced recordings. And, to whoever that used Ahanti as an example comparing Amy's skill's against need to make your point a little less elementary and instead more in depth/complexed. WE ALL KNOW ASHANTI CAN'T SING!! So what's your point?! Also, remember, like one of you said...The many other artists that have BEEN doing what Amy is just now embarked upon with R&B/NeoSoul, etc.., whom happen to be Black, and happen to not get all the love and attention from MAINSTREAM MEDIA, are overlooked and NOT getting that exposure/push like an Amy Winehouse. Amy is getting all her's, which most White artists/athletes get whenever doing music that supposedly isn't within their stereotypical genre or play a sport dominated by Black athletes. But, if they got game or talent, then they got game and talent.... Universally accepted. Regardless of skin color. If Amy WAS Black, she'd just blend right in with the many other artists that some of you mentioned in your blog. Just another R&B/NeoSoul artist trying to fight thru the competition. Let's just freakin' keep it REAL!!

For all of you who don't know the GAME of this entertainment industry should be enlightened/educated!! If you read the editorial on this topic you'd have seen it stated (PARAPHRASED) "with heavy radio campaign and strong marketing and promotion." For one, heavy radio campaign/Air play is via some serious PAYOLLA!! You have a powerful label with big pockets for radio campaign and the dough to push a record down your "ears/throat". 99% of the time the song cannot be denied to move up the charts. It's also called heavy advertisement. Like an add for a product or a trailer constantly seen on TV to influence/promote a movie. It's been done for years by record companies as a tactic in competing to sell music....The worthy and great talents get that push, and, unfortunately, like in Amy's case, even the less talented get backed by BIG/MAJOR LABELS with that same priviledge. A tactic of extreme exposure resulting in subconscious influence upon consumers/audiences. How many times have you heard garbage on the radio played EVERYDAY & EVERY HOUR of the DAY? Doesn't mean the song is hot..A lot of money being spent to get those "spins"...Trust me...Fooling many into thinking the song is a "BANGA"...NOT!! See, the entertainment biz understands that the general public overall is ignorant and that the majority will watch, listen, eat or wear anything they can make you think is the "SHIT"...They know this. Look at TV programs nowadays...The music, etc...Whatever happens to be "in' at the time is just carbon copied and re-done with a little twist. It's all about being POP/Popular vs. Talented...Example....Paris Hilton, etc. Not to mention sooo many others. So if you're feeling Amy, then good for you..If you're not? I'm with you!! PEACE!!

Music doesn't belong to one class of people nor another. Music is universal, color-blind and beautiful. Everything doesn't have to always be about race. I love all music, (except some country music, they whine too much); but if I can snap my finger to it I'd put it on my playlist. Come one people, take a deep breathe, and put on some music and chill the F out!
Thanks for coming out, God bless and good night.
