Last night, Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige held royal court at the Louisiana Superdome as a main-stage headliner of the final night of the three-day 13th Annual Essence Music Festival as it made its triumphant return to New Orleans.
Once she came down from her explosive first number -- a mix of the 50 Cent/The Game collaboration 'Hate it or Love It,' and her breakthrough first single 'Real Love' -- Blige tapped into what her loyal legion of fans expect of her: the connectivity between an authentic performer and an eager audience.
"In this building, so much has happened," she said of the storied venue, which became a subject of anarchy during the dark days following Hurricane Katrina's devastation. "But guess what, never again will it happen because of the prayers of the people and I just want y'all to know to know that y'all got mine." From there she launched into her 1995 single 'Be Happy.'
Though her set was shorter than usual, the multiple Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter performed what seemed like her vast catalogue of hit singles, including music from her groundbreaking 1992 debut 'What's the 411?' and her most recent album, 2005' critically acclaimed disc 'The Breakthrough.'
Songs like her knock-down, drag out signature tour-de-force 'No More Drama,' and the overlooked and brutally honest mid-tempo track 'Baggage' drove Blige's message -- about self-examination and valuing enriching relationships -- home to the rapturous crowd, who followed the Yonkers-bred trendsetter every step of the way.
"I know I am a mess sometimes, but I am a good woman," Blige said to the sold out crowd, while doling out an empowering mantra about how you can't expect someone to know and love you if you don't know and love yourself.
From there she segued into one of her most compelling compositions, 'Take Me As I Am,' which brought the audience to its feet during the song's highs and lows.
But her inspiration wasn't only felt among the sea of sisters; the tatted up, bottle blond diva --a frequent 'Essence' magazine cover girl, who is also a spokesperson for one of the festival's blue chip co-sponsors Chevy -- even had hardcore thug types rocking and rolling to her hard-edged brew of R&B music.
As always, Mary J. Blige always brings the house down...

Go ahead, attack the oricle of rean if you must but all black people don't want to or will support someone in music ( winning grammy awards, no less) that sounds like ' dying cat'. Some of you coke heads, weed smokers and alcolics are so excited about Mary J because you all see her as someone who made it out of that darkness ( She's had how many breakthroughs now?
Fans, keep watching, another record is due soon, wait .
Its will be a silly as the previous debacles and you devote's will eat it up like honey (how pathetic) and she'll gain go to the back, ( with your money and laugh that she has hoodwinked you fools again.) aybe there is genius in her madness afterall I'll ponder it!

Defend this no singing sqank if you must, wont change the FACT that she really isn't a singer and no amount of pathetic praise will change the reality she came along in Music? at the right time. Low moral standards, music video and acceptence of just ok talent opposed to the great talent that flourished before this moaning ( No MORE DRAMA) got some attention. Someone out there suggested that Mary has her own style of singing...they're right. It's called NO REAL MUSICAL TALENT. A lot, most of today's so called neo soul recording artist fall into this catagory and since the standards are so low now thanks to people like a lot of you berating me for pointing these FACTS out Mary J and her ilk can now have a career eradicating the high standards that were set before their coming into the business. Shw is NOT a singer. Nancy Wilson is a singer, Diana Ross is a singer, Merry Clayton, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughn, Barbra Striesand, Etta James, Marlene Shaw, Cleo Laine, De Dee Bridgewater, Vanessa Rubin. Laverne Butler. Diane Reeves, Aretha, Dionne, Cissy Houston and again too many other great names and voices to list here. Mary J. WILL NEVER MEASURE TO ANY OTHER THE LADIES i HAVE LISTED HERE. Thats a fact, relax and learn to live with it.

I never thought she was a good singer. She is always off key and ad-libs horribly. However, she has sounded much better since she stopped smoking and I am glad that she is leading a healthier life (relationships, spiritually, no drugs/smoking). She has got good management because she is still out there doing her thing.

Mary is an excellent singer. No matter what anyone says. She has over 15 years and 7 studio albums to prove it. Not to mention the countless awards. She is hot and that is why other artists want her to sing on their projects. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but some of you are going beyond attacking her proffessionally, you are attacking her personally. I don't recall any of you saying that you know her personally. I bet if we knew something about your pathetic little lives, we could talk about you too! P.S. Mary J. Blige, has alot of devoted long time fans, don't get us mad.

Fan of Mary, ---F--k you and that off key, no singing bitch that you seem to be adicted to. Who cares about you being mad about those of us who have differnt opinions than you. Anybody today can get awards, they really don't mean anything anymore. Example, Ashanti winning the ' Aretha Franklin lady of soul award,' what a hoot. What about a Grammy for ' Baby got back' That one really enriched the culture. You need to live awhile before you try in your pathetic fashion to attack those of us whom have heard real great singers and Mary J, Ain't ONe Of Them' Period.

James, please get some help. You have been on this blog everyday. I do wish you would find something better to do with your time. While you are going way beyond giving your opinion of Mary, you are being very disrepectful of her and her fans and you know we don't approve of that. Now James, you know that I know that you have all of Mary's cds including her live concert and DVD and that you buys every magazine that she covers or even have one sentence or picture in.I KNOW THIS. So why, James? I know that you just bought a brand new keyboard, so why are you blaming your crummy old keyboard for you not knowing how to spell. I KNOW YOU CAN'T.You just never caught on like the rest of us did. James, please let this go. If you say you don't like Mary then you don't like her. Play some of them cds and actually listen to the words, you will feel much better. My brother, THE UNDERCOVER MARY J. BLIGE FAN. Love, your lil sis.

I was very dissappointed with her richmond, VA concert. I have seen her 3 times in the past and always felt I got my monies worth but this time I wish I could get a refund. She was the only act which was fine with me but she stayed on stage 1 hour, she did not change her outfit once, my seat was in the 4th row on the left side and she only came to that side of the stage 3 times the entire time. I paid 80 dollars for my ticket I know thats not anything to Mary but its alot to me and there was a time in her life it was alot to her. The audience set there stunned thinking she was coming back. I will never got to another concert unless she has other acts with her. I understand getting all your money but give the people what they paid for see I shouldve gone to see Beyonce!!!!
