"I ain't never heard the sleep word so much in my life until I got on Broadway. I'm so tired - mentally tired, physically tired. Miss Celie takes a lot out of me. I'm being told everyday that I'm ugly. ... you can't play the part if you don't kind of put yourself in her shoes and live her life. So it's like, I carry that stuff with me."
-- 'American Idol' winner turned Broadway darling Fantasia Barrino about her starring role in 'The Color Purple' musical. (Associated Press)

I took my two granddaughters, both eleven years old, to see The Color Purple this spring. One girl lives in South Carolina and although she has visited me many times, this was the first time I took her to Manhattan at night. She was fascinated by the lights and the hustle and bustle of the city. I thought the play would be anti-climactic for her, but during the play, whenever you were on stage, she would lean foward with a smile on her face, mesmerized by your performance. Its said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To this black woman and her granddaughters you were and are truly beautiful.

I can't believe that anyone could call YOU ugly. I would personally like to know who and what they are looking at because it can't be you. You have been through so much and i definately appreciate what you do for music.
