From here on out, the Phat Farm fashion empire that urban fashion connoisseurs have grown to love over the past fifteen years will not be as they know it.
The hip-hop chic clothing line(s) is losing its leader.
Russell Simmons, the revered hip-hop mogul who founded the company, has stepped down as the CEO of Phat Fashions LLC.
It was announced last week that the company has entered a partnership with Longstreet Industries, a division of Stretch-O-Rama, Inc., to design and market the sportswear and outerwear collections under the Phat Farm and the new XV brand names.
Simmons -- the man who was on the frontlines of bringing hip-hop to the mainstream via Def Jam Records -- said this was the right time for him to step down as CEO of Phat Fashions in order to pursue his other varied interests.
"I have enjoyed my association with Kellwood over the last three years," he said in a statement.
"We have accomplished much during this short period of time – and I leave the division and the brand in great hands. There are so many things I want to achieve, and this is the appropriate moment for me to move on to my next business venture."Simmons sold Phat Fashions and all of its brands and licenses to Kellwood in 2004 for a reported $140 million dollars.
Following the sale, he held the title of CEO of Phat Fashions, while also developing his own businesses in the jewelry, fragrance, personal health and entertainment industries.
"Russell Simmons is one of the true pioneers of the urban lifestyle fashion business," said Kellwood chairman, president, and chief executive officer Robert C. Skinner. "He leaves an outstanding creative legacy at Phat Fashions, and we will continue to build on that heritage as Phat Fashions continues to break through boundaries and set the standard for innovative design and high quality sportswear."
Following his departure, all of Phat Fashions' brands will continue to be operated, distributed and licensed by Phat Fashions and Kellwood, except for Russell Simmons-Argyleculture and Atman, which will become his trademark properties.

I believe that Mr. Simmons knows what is best for him. He's been there and he is a mogul he's made his mark, he's proved his worth and it's been an exciting and entertaining adventure. My family loves Phat Farm fashion and they wear them all of the time. MR. Simmons know what's ahead and he has lots of friends to back him up. Change brings not only opportunities to exploit but challenges in dealing successfully with the changes good luck on your new ventures Mr. Simmons

Personally I think Phat Farm and Baby Phat are ghetto. Not too many executives wearing it. I have a couple of Baby Phat purses/tops and that is it! I think it is overpriced and just not all that. I am more into TR, R&R and People's liberation the 200-400.00 jeans that no one can really afford so there is not a lot. I get them cheaper of course, but everyone and their momma wears BP and that is really why I don't care for it.

Russell got rich with his fashions. Phat Fram is sold by many premium merchants. When you can corner a place in Macy's and Nordstrom's you must have something going for you.
I didn't particularly like the brand but them I'm no longer a teenager. I like more sedate styles. Longevity is the word for me. I can't replace my clothing by the season. I buy good merchandise and I make it last a few seasons. Nothing trendy for me.
