Eddie Griffin experienced a real "n-word" wake-up call when his raunchy comedy act came to a screeching halt last weekend in Miami.
The 'Undercover Brother' star was booked as the main headliner for Friday night's line-up at the Black Enterprise/Pepsi 14th Annual Golf & Tennis Challenge.
The pint-sized, loud-mouthed funnyman's profanity, racial-slur-laced tirade didn't go over too well with the family friendly sold out audience.
Griffin turned out to be the ultimately show-stopper, literally, when his microphone suddenly "failed" after repeatedly using the 'N-Word.'
Soon after his abrupt silencing, Black Enterprise magazine owner and publisher Earl Graves, came on stage with the plug in his hand and said: "We at Black Enterprise will not allow our culture to go backwards. Black Enterprise stands for decency, black culture and dignity and we will pay Mr. Griffin all that we owe him but we will not allow him to finish the show if that's the way he's going to talk."
Whoa. Talk about theatrics.
Graves received a standing ovation from the sold-out audience, including Rev. Al Sharpton, who preached at the event the following day and applauded Mr. Graves for his strong stance on behalf of Black people.
Black Enterprise spokesperson Andrew Wadium did confirm that Griffins's show was cut short, citing "language restrictions," but did not go into much further detail.
A request for comment from Graves was declined.
Sharpton, on the other hand, didn't hold back in sharing his thoughts with The BV Newswire today. "I was proud and grateful that Earl Graves, Sr. stood up for our people and his readers by pulling the plug on comedian Eddie Griffin who repeatedly used the "N" word at his performance at the Black Enterprise-Pepsi Challenge over Labor Day weekend in Miami."
"It signified that we at National Action Network are not alone in the fight to end the demeaning and racist language that has allowed our people to aid in their own victimization for years," Sharpton, , on the frontlines for the voice of the disenfranchised for the past two decades, continued. "In any other community there are organizations that stand up for the rights of the people such as the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) that monitors the insensitivity and racism against the Jewish community, and my group is no exception."
"In the same way that no comedian or entertainer would get up and call a Jewish person out of their name without their being outrage, we will not allow black people to be demeaned by our own people," Sharpton maintained. "Eddie Griffin has the right to say what he wants to say, but we have the right to protest what he says and will hold everyone to these same standards. I have nothing personal against Mr. Griffin but I will continue to fight tirelessly to end the indecency that is setting us back a hundred years."
"My daughter Dominique was in the audience that night and called me and said 'Dad I witnessed history in the making today" and when she relayed what happened to me I was content that our efforts have not been in vain."
A rep for Griffin could not be reached by deadline.

I see that it was pointed out that Richard Pryor, after returning from Africa, stopped using the N-word. The other comics didn't catch on because they ain't funny. Check out the comics of today. Now, repeat their joke but edit out, in your mind, the N-word...Not too funny, huh? And young-blood Tony, we aren't trying to impress white folks anymore. We are just trying to make up for our failure as parents & responsible adults by assuming our dignity NOW! Yes, MY generation dropped the ball in raising you. OUR parents would have slapped the fool out of us if we said a word that even sounded like the N-word. How did it come to pass that in ONE generation the most vile curse word ever inflicted on a Black man become a term of endearment. Our foremothers were called that as massa raped them...Our forefathers were called that when they were forced to stand by & watch. No, the word is wrong, Son...Please don't use it again. And I apologize that while my generation was out free lovin' & smokin' cheeba, letting a video & muppets raise you, we didn't give you other words to say. Much Love to Gen. X from Gen. Why?

I'm glad Mr Graves said 'enough'. However I do have to point out that Eddie should have never been booked for that type of event. I absolutely *love* Eddie Griffin and his comedy, but his style of comedy in front of a bunch of corporate folks does not mix. Whomever at Black Enterprise who thought that was a good idea needs to step up and take responsibility for their screwup. I love to read BE each month and I like Eddie, just not at the same time. :0)

The issue here is a simple one. Take away free speech from everyone in the country.
Or, raise your own kid to respect themselves and others in a way where offensive words and actions are determined by all that they associate with, and are not used volountarily.
Do your work as a parent and do not leave it for the village to bare.

Right on Mr. Graves, no race respects the blacks, because the blacks don't respectg themselves. At last! Respect for the Black race, oh my God, it's truly time. Stop those black abusive comedians.

Come on are you kidding me, if anyone knows Edddy, they know what he is all about.. They should have never booked him if they did not want to hear the N-word.. They had other motives..

Nigger: Slang: Extremely Disparaging and Offensive. a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc.
Now for all the people who seem to be getting bent out of shape for the N-word as it seems to have become controversial. Stated in a white dictionary(cause we damn sure aint make them)..the word is demeaning to ANYONE!! Blacks are not and will not be the only ones affected by the title "Nigger"..It is YOU narrow-minded individuals who take it into context as if it only describes the black culture!! I am a well educated young man myself and until further my definition of the N word is stated above..Any person of ANY race can be considered a "nigger"..start doing your background checks ppl

Well done Mr. Graves! We have enough to deal with fighting the system. Maybe as a people we can come together and quit fighting and degrading each other. And maybe BET will follow suit.

this entire situation is retarded. first off i think this was planned and eddie was used as the scapegoat, cause anybody that knows of eddie griffin and his comedic background knows his use of the infamous "N" word & foul or TV censored language. They should of did a background check or asked around about his standup content before hiring him to perform infront of that Politically Correct Audience. i also notice how Al Sharptons camera loving ass is always around when somebody says Nigga. Like hes the w orlds foremost leader on the Word & or subject. Like hes the spokesman for the entire african american race. i also agree with tonybee. you hit the nail on the head. where were you N word loathing individuals when richard pryor , eddie murphy, redd foxx, jamie foxx and countless other comedians were using the N word in their standup as well as movie apperances......exactly. NO WHERE! Kramer goes off and calls 2 black men a nigger, and the world is in an uproar. that whole situation was blown out of proportion (hoped i spelled it right). that situation should have ended with kramer apologizing to those 2 men and those men alone. not the media not his family, not jerry seinfeld getting on tv explaining his friends actions. just kramer and those 2 men. cause in all honesty if they were acting like NIGGERS, they should have been called NIGGERS. and most of you self righteous , pompus assholes that are saying the N word is wrong and so-on and so-forth. probably were being called nigga , greeted or greeting people yuo know with the word nigga and you werent offended then. so why all of a sudden you getting mad now? cause al sharpton says so? cause bill cosby says so? cause oprah says so? Negro please. you're going to let people that didnt grow up in our generation (80's) dictate how we should live our lives? how we should think and act? what slang and language we use? they are on the outside looking in. they ont know what life was like for us, they dont know what we went through, but they are the ones holding conventions about how we should live our lives, and oprah in all her genius decides to hold a rally and invite all the rappers and actors that dont use profanity and foul language in their lyrics instead of actually inviting the people she was addressing. thats rather cowardly in my opinion. i dont see her inviting 5oc, the game, kanye west, diddy, young jeezy or david banner. who does she invite people like common. =/ be serious. know what i just realized, i could type on endlessly about this subject, but i just remembered how my generation acts. you cant accept peoples opinions and everything i say that conflicts with your sound beliefs will be viewed as me Hating. yet i'm the ignorant one. hahaha

Thank you very much, Mr. Graves Jr. I used to like hearing Eddie Griffin's comedy but his use of the n-word has to end. It is time to teach our children about Black pride. The lack of pride in ourselves as black people is very disgusting. I graduated from High School in 1970 and in those days we were saying it loud that we are black and we are proud.
