Juanita Bynum has an uncanny way of putting things into perspective. And because of that, the revered televangelist has built an ever-expanding loyal following through her various religious endeavors.
When the Chicago native and former hair dresser, flight attendant, welfare recipient, drug offender and gold selling recording artist was allegedly attacked by her estranged husband Bishop Thomas Weeks, III on Aug. 21 during a near fatal physical altercation in an Atlanta hotel's parking lot, Bynum's visibility increased by the ten-fold.
Mainstream media outlets helped galvanize an insatiable public interests in the woman who is officially known as "Prophetess Juanita Bynum."
She, in turn, became the self-proclaimed "new face of domestic abuse" as the legal travails of her and her husband entered the public zeitgeist. Her savvy PR campaign – with stops on 'The Tom Joyner Morning Show,' 'Good Morning America,' 'Star Jones Show' and a series of press conferences – increased her mainstream celebrity.
Now comes an "exclusive" two-part interview with Essence magazine, where Bynum breaks her silence.
Excerpts are below:
On the Attack:
"And then he just grabbed me, and he grabbed me around my throat and threw me to the ground. I said, "Oh, my God, my head!" because the whole sky was spinning. And when I turned around, that's when I got the first kick. I screamed out, "Please don't kill me!..."
On Why She Stayed in the Marriage:
"I don't want anybody to think I was stupid for staying; I stayed because of who I was-I had to be careful. My thoughts were, I can't get a divorce. What would people say? How would they view me? I just felt like I needed to pray more. And I did, and it did get better. We went three years without him getting physical, but then the verbal rage would still be there."
On Her New Mission:
"When people can see where you came from and see what you are today and know looking at where you came from and know that there is no real legal reason why you should even be left standing and you're still standing, that is when God gets the glory. That's when people say there must be a God somewhere. That's where my stand is right now."
Part one of the interview is slated to run in the December issue, followed by Part two in January.
Later this month,'Juanita Bynum: Unplugged' will be released via Flow Records. The DVD project boasts candid interviews, performances from her latest album 'A Piece of My Passion,' and her trademark dynamic ministering.

I have been in miss Bynum's shoes and yes I agree that she should have done her homework before marrying this guy. Never is a relationship built on the anger, aggression and pent up frustration he had for his former wife. The man was probably looking at his former wife when he allegedly assaulted Miss Bynum. The poor guy needed more time to rebound from the previous mess of a marriage. I am a professionally, educated counselor who have seen this type of situation more often than I would like to. I doubt if Miss Bynum and her ex spent as much time in counseling thinking that by being who they are...preachers, they knew what they were doing. Remembers all doctors need a doctor except Jesus. As you can see, they didn't. If they did have counseling I would like to know who the Counselor was. Preachers are people too. And if Miss Bynum would search the moments of her past, there were things that she did to him that he didn't like. I specialize in counseling Pastors, First Ladies, ministers and people like her. My list of clients are highly secretive and we keep it that way, in fact, most people do not know that I exist.
I am praying for her and her ex.
David

These people dont bring the message of God. They bring their own message and pocket the money. They need to find some other job. They have forgotten the message they need to tell if they ever knew it. I hope the full judgement of God comes against them.

Would Juanita Bynum be willing to sell all she has and give it to the poor?

Enough is enough. There is no way that she did not know what Tommy was before she married him. Most of his acquaintances when he was in a real church that was part of a real organization, we knew the real person. His first wife could have told the Prophetess a few things. that's for sure.

My goodness, Karu darling I think that you are obsessed with Juanita yourself, (It's the hair and make-up, right, lol) you have the whole black christian community talking about this new national investigation on 6 televagelists and their "earnings" from a top republican senator (and no JB is not on the list) and you are here talking about Juanita in an Essence interview for the month of December, my God man, where still in November. Unbelievable. I thought for sure their would be a blog on Bishop Eddie Long and Creflo Dollar who are the two along with Joyce Meyer, Paula White and her husband, the Copelands and Benny Hinn. And BTW she was never a "drug offender" quit with the cattiness and gossip.
As far as her husband, Tina Turner was married to Ike for a couple of years before he started doing cocaine and becoming phyiscally abusive. This Bishop was a sheep in wolves clothing and by all accounts she was not the only person that he fooled. That woman Lorraine Robinson served in the mans congregation for 10 years and I don't know if they were lovers or what, but he didn't hestitate to choke and bodyslam her after all those years of service. She got talked out of pressing charges, 8 months later it happened to Juanita. Too many people have been enabling this man's evil behavior for too long. Even his first wife kept her mouth shut about his abuse towards her. I don't understand this man's appeal, he must be something in the sack, because Juanita was single along time and she just fell for him hard and lost all her common sense. The same can be said for the other women as well. I believe this man will finally get his justice and serve time. Meanwhile JB needs to take along hard look in the mirror cause her desperation and need to get married almost cost her life and may even cost her some money (in alimony) unless the court rules otherwise. I still adore and I know she will come up and out of this victorious. But she better take a long hard look at her personal decisions before she even considers dating again.
And BTW Sheryl Underwwon is a ghettofied idiot who defends Bush and the republican party, but doesn't hesitate to make comedy when another woman of color's been mishandled and abused. To think I used to like her.
