Juanita Bynum has an uncanny way of putting things into perspective. And because of that, the revered televangelist has built an ever-expanding loyal following through her various religious endeavors.
When the Chicago native and former hair dresser, flight attendant, welfare recipient, drug offender and gold selling recording artist was allegedly attacked by her estranged husband Bishop Thomas Weeks, III on Aug. 21 during a near fatal physical altercation in an Atlanta hotel's parking lot, Bynum's visibility increased by the ten-fold.
Mainstream media outlets helped galvanize an insatiable public interests in the woman who is officially known as "Prophetess Juanita Bynum."
She, in turn, became the self-proclaimed "new face of domestic abuse" as the legal travails of her and her husband entered the public zeitgeist. Her savvy PR campaign – with stops on 'The Tom Joyner Morning Show,' 'Good Morning America,' 'Star Jones Show' and a series of press conferences – increased her mainstream celebrity.
Now comes an "exclusive" two-part interview with Essence magazine, where Bynum breaks her silence.
Excerpts are below:
On the Attack:
"And then he just grabbed me, and he grabbed me around my throat and threw me to the ground. I said, "Oh, my God, my head!" because the whole sky was spinning. And when I turned around, that's when I got the first kick. I screamed out, "Please don't kill me!..."
On Why She Stayed in the Marriage:
"I don't want anybody to think I was stupid for staying; I stayed because of who I was-I had to be careful. My thoughts were, I can't get a divorce. What would people say? How would they view me? I just felt like I needed to pray more. And I did, and it did get better. We went three years without him getting physical, but then the verbal rage would still be there."
On Her New Mission:
"When people can see where you came from and see what you are today and know looking at where you came from and know that there is no real legal reason why you should even be left standing and you're still standing, that is when God gets the glory. That's when people say there must be a God somewhere. That's where my stand is right now."
Part one of the interview is slated to run in the December issue, followed by Part two in January.
Later this month,'Juanita Bynum: Unplugged' will be released via Flow Records. The DVD project boasts candid interviews, performances from her latest album 'A Piece of My Passion,' and her trademark dynamic ministering.
EXTRA: Comedienne Sheryl Underwood offers her take on the Bynum controversy.

I AGREE WITH THE ABOVE COMMENT, HE SENT BISHOP IN PROF. BYNUM LIFE TO DESTROY, THE BIBLE SAID SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND, BUT YOU ASK AND IT WILL BE GIVEN. I WAS AT A RIVIAL THE PREACHER SAID DON'T JUST ASK FOR A MAN OR A WOMAN, AS FOR EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT. 6FT 1, TALL, HANDSOME, LOVING, HAPPY ECT. I ENJOY PROF. BYNUMS' SPEACHES AND SHE IS A CHILD OF GOD. IT IS VERY FEW OF US WHO WOULD TELL THE TRUE STORY OF OUR LIFE, HOW WE LIVED DAY TO DAY, HER NO MORE SHEETS TOLD THE STORY, WE ARE NOT TO JUDGE, ALL I CAN SAY FOR THE BISHOP, IS IF HE WAS A CALLING FROM CHRIST, HE MUST REPENT AND GET BACK ON THE TRAIN CORRECT, SOMETHING HAVE CORRUPTED HIM IN THE WORST WAY. SISTER BYNUM, STAY STRONG YOU HAVE ENCOURAGED ME IN SOO MANY WAYS WITH THE NO MORE SHEETS AND OTHER READING MATERIAL TO CONTINUE TO MAKE POSITIVE CHOICES.
I LIKE TO SAY PERSONALLY, THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENCOURANGING ADVISE IN YOUR SPEECHES AND SERMONS.
THANKS, SHAE SHAE- TAMPA

I am a Christian lady and a wife. And to hear that Thomas Weeks abused his wife leaves me wanting words to discribe what I think of him. Bishhop or bishop not, I dont care how anointed he is, a true man of God would never beat his wife. Thomas Weeks, I wont even address him as Bishop, is a warlock in my eyes and a disgrace to the body of christ and his Jamaican roots. I am sorry, but I take no side with a man against another woman. I am a woman and my huband can deside to start beating me tonight when he gets home from work just because his day went bad. To all those who think Juanita should shut up; what if you were wearing her shoes? Do you guys know how many pastors' wives are beaten by their husbands and they keep silent until the day they die. Only judgement day will tell. Let the Prophetess speak! It is her pain! Forget her titles! She is a woman and the man she loved and maybe still loves hit her. Juanita is a public figure so everyone knows her. What about the Juanitas that nobody knows cuz she ain't on T.V.? What about the Thomas Weeks nobody knows who bus' his woman's ass every night while the children watch in terror? The BODY OF CHRIST needs to think about that!!! No woman likes it when her man shouts at her, imagine him beating you then. To Juanita Bynum, our prayer group here in Jamaica prays for you everyday. Girl you have Warring Angels fighting for you. And believe or not, like it or not, for every time Thomas Weeks hurt you, as The Lord blesses you and favors you through this trial Thomas Weeks will suffer seven times for God has removed His anointing from him.
JESUS IS YOUR HERO AND HE IS SAVING YOUR DAY.

I totally understand what JB is going through. She ought to know that no matter what the haters think, her welfare comes first.God u come to judgment u will be alone and no pointing of fingers.God will help u if u help yourself.Heal first and give yourself sometime off.You did the best thing to speak about it but kindly learn to forgive him.Help him deal with his anger as a friend.

Away with all those who think Juanita did the worst by speaking up.Where in the bible is it written men should beat their wives and the wives should be quiet because he is the chosen one of God?Anointed or not, no woman should stand an abusive husband.JB my dear,u did great.U have given many other women undergoing the same courage to speak up and end this. Those who find fault in your actions are no better than the so called "Bishop". I wonder what type he is anyway. A deaf ear to them and all ears to you.I'm with you all the way gal.Praying for u to get the true word from the Almighty.Stand strong. Many admire u,I do admire u.At least u are some inspiration to the weak hearted unlike the "Bishop".He will soon receive his share of pain and embarrassment.God is just whether u are anointed or not.Keep up the spirit Juanita.

No one has the right to speak on the matters at hand because you went home to him and the world will never know what went on behind your doors. I don't know you personally but I do have you close to heart as if you were my big sister. The secular and Christian media will defiantly delight themselves on this but it's such a blessing to know that Daddy sees all and knows all and that ALL that matters. Especially since he is No respecter of person. Stay encouraged and I appreciate how you've been able to be true to yourself first because doing so shows us that your not willing to approach us with a mask on but with a true heart. It hurts to see that you had to witness and experience how the "boys" stick together but they'll also go down together when Daddy rains down His true form of justice. I'm sure you've heard it all but I just want to let you know I think of you everyday and what Daddy did for Gideon He'll do for you. Hugs and kisses.
My ex-husband is a pk and as been able to get away with numerous girlfriends, physical and verbal abuse in front of me and others, and be able to still function in ministry (under his parents) although they find the only reason he was subject to such demonic torture is ( his mom saying) "I didn't pray and fast enough". Running to my family (that I was estranged to since our marriage) was the plan of the devil and I was suppose to be at their mercy at all times. Now I am fighting by myself against him, his family, and his church for our two children who they were able to get full custody of. Taking advantage of the fact that they are well off than I am and being a single mother having to take full financial responsibility of the two children as well. Police records of the domestic incidents between us have been erased from their system since one of his members worked in the record department and was even brought before federal court regarding the disappearance of other records and was acquitted. With confidence and peace I just whisper in my heart Daddy what you did for Gideon do for me. Psalm 7, Matt. 6 and 7, have really held me up but true peace comes from praying for my enemies... only because Daddy says to do so and what He sees done in secret He'll reward openly.
I'm anxious to see what floodgates of blessings Daddy will open for you in the future!
Hugs and kisses.

I am a true victim of domestic violence and I find it repugnant that Ms.Bynum is "merchandising her pain", just like Sheryl Underwood said. She was in a hotel with a "violent" man and the event occurred at around 4-5am in the hotel parking lot. What were they doing all night long? How come so much of the story is missing? The reality is that whatever the truth is, they need to deal with it privately before they air it publically. Juanita is a person, with faults, issues and problems. You mean to tell me that this prophetess did not have a problem doing a well attended marriage seminar with a man that was abusing her? She allowed an abusive man to co-facilitate a service in which they ministered to so many of God's people. Why? Was it the acclaim? fame? or front? that she seems to be presenting even now.
People need to shut up and pray. Bishop Weeks is questionable but so is Juanita. She publically shared an experience where she threatened her husband with a brick. It seems there is a whole lot more to this story.
I just hope people are not stupid enough to feed into the hype. Juanita seems to be milking this for all it is worth. True Domestic Violence victims seek healing, and they run from abusers not into the public spotlight.

Please - true believers in Christ. Let us watch our words and the tone of how we criticize. Remember, those who are not believers are watching our response, as well, as we beat up on each other. I am saddened by the situation. Don't you know when you set out to be an example for Christian marriage (IN THIS DAY & TIME!!), that the enemy is awaiting! They were beautifully helping others to stay happily married -- have you forgotten? .. and the enemy came in like a flood. I am in the fire myself. I was emotionally abused, not physically, and am on the brink of a divorce. But it is for a testimony* We MUST KEEP our mates and our marriages IN PRAYER each day. Please stop using your tongues to tear down (NO ONE knows the whole truth but God). We are humans and none of us is without sin. No act is beyond God's forgiveness. Remember the Word, if God could forgive the guilty thief on the cross (paying his debt), REMEMBER God can forgive anyone who truly is repentant. Let's pray that God will change hearts. I see this beautiful couple in Christ RESTORED and bringing healing to others. They are in the fire, don't turn up the heat with your words and negativity. They are on my prayer list. Are they on yours? Lord, have mercy on us all.
