Tyler Perry has done it again.
Not only has the acclaimed filmmaker made an indelible mark in Hollywood (delivering six feature movies in three years), he's also conquering television, too.
It was announced today that the 'Madea's Family Reunion' director has bring his latest movie, 'Meet The Browns,' to the small screen.
TBS has ordered 10 episodes of the new sitcom, which comes to the network from Debmar-Mercury and is slated to premiere in January 2009.
This follows a very successful run of the enormously popular sitcom, 'Tyler Perry's House of Payne,' on the basic cable network, which launched in 2006 with a 10-episode experimental run in select cities. After producing strong ratings, TBS ordered a full-fledged series with an unprecedented 100 episodes.
'Meet The Browns' stars David Mann as Leroy Brown, a character who earlier this year was featured in Perry's hit film of the same name, which also starred Academy Award nominee Angela Bassett and former NBA superstar turned actor Rick Fox.
The TV series, a spin-off based on characters of the 'Meet The Browns' play and movie, begins after Brown inherits a dilapidated house from his deceased father.
No other casting has been announced.
"I am so excited to continue my relationship with TBS," Perry said. "It has been so fulfilling artistically, I feel as if I've been adopted into another family. An artist such as myself cannot imagine being in a partnership with any other network."
Debmar-Mercury, a worldwide production and distribution company specializing in syndication, cable, network, VOD/Pay-Per-View and Pay TV, devised the deal for the 'House of Payne' show, and is the brainchild behind this latest venture.
"The 10-episode preview experiment worked so well in whetting the appetite of viewers for 'House of Payne,' which is about to start its second season on TBS with all new episodes," said Debmar-Mercury co-president Mort Marcus. "We knew the same distribution model was the perfect way to go to expand the huge 'Meet The Browns' brand to television."
"We have considered TBS to be an enthusiastic partner in this novel venture from the beginning, so it is very rewarding for us to be able to build on the franchise created by Tyler," Debmar-Mercury co-president Ira Bernstein added. "He continues to amaze us with his uncanny ability to produce one hit after another."

Freedom of speech is supposed to be a wonderful thing. However, is it really necessary to blast someone for his gift of entertaining us in a style which does not embarrass us with explicit language, sex and behaviors that do not reflect our realitities?
In my life, as well as most of our lives, I have experienced just about everything that Tyler's plays and movies depict and then some: from tragedy (an alcoholic father who often tried to kill us) to a mother who worked 3 jobs to keep us just on the edge of the ghetto (well, actually, we spent two years in public housing). We are the Browns, so many of us.
We loved. We lost. We kept our faith in God through it all, and we are still here knowing that our God, through Jesus Christ, will sustain us. Though Mother divorced him for our safety, my alcoholic father was miraculously delivered and lived the rest of his life for the Lord, singing gospel for real. Mother retired and lived an even longer life loving her kids grandkids, great-grandkids and other people's kids.
I thank God for Tyler Perry's gift and for sharing it with us. If you don't like what you see, you have other choices. I choose Tyler's plays and movies because they teach, preach, praise and worship while also indicating how not to behave.
God bless all of you.
Betty

You can say what you want about Tyler Perry but the fact remands that he is very successful and I have never seen a black show on TBS. I came up during the Good Times, All in the family, What's happening, Sanford and Son, Chico and the man era. I hate most of the shows on TV. And his movies are not the same... there are different messages... I'm proud of Tyler Perry and hope he continues to have great success!

KUDOS to Tyler Perry! I am glad to see a positive black man making TV & movies for us (cause the other networks aren't)! his work is refreshing ... I am sick and tired of seeing the same ole' ghetto, shoot 'em up tales with no happy ending. Yes, our stories do have happy ending too!

I've enjoyed everything that Tyler Perry has done with the exception of his play "What's Done in the Dark". I was very disappointed in this play and "House of Payne" just isn't funny to me. David Mann should try some other way to be funny besides dressing weird and mispronouncing his words. Other then that, I love everything else. As far as as his movies,no one is bringing MATURE black loves stories to the big screen BUT Tyler Perry. Also, I look forward to the gorgeous black men in his movies.
Anywayzzz, I am looking forward to seeing Meet the Browns and I hope it is as funny as Martin or other classic black sitcoms.

Mr. Perry keep up the good work! No matter what the nay sayers say, we need to see Black life in another light. We all don't have baby momma drama nor are we in a gang robbing and killing. Thank you for your work and entertainment.
God bless you and your staff!

I feel that what Tyler Perry is doing is phenomenal. His success should be a example of what anyone can do, if they choose to put their mind to it. Yes, his shows, plays, and movies all send us messages we need to here and God is a recurring part of that. However, it shouldn't take a TP production to remind us to turn to God in times of need. We should already know that.
