Oprah Winfrey was among the black glitterati who came out in full force last night to celebrate Susan L. Taylor's National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM) at New York City's ESPACE.
The Queen of All Media, who originally made a $500,000 commitment to the cause -the largest single donation to date, was so moved by the spirit of the evening that she doubled her donation-a total of $1 million-to undergird the mission.
Taylor, the former front-woman of best-selling black woman's magazine 'Essence,' was elated with the grand contribution. "What a blessing Oprah's generosity is to the healing of so many young lives," she said. "Her extraordinary gift of love took my breath away." Renowned as the visionary and heart behind one of the most respected African-American brands in the world, Taylor has shifted her focus to community service with the newly established organization – her calling is to help secure a generation of black children through the work of NCMM.
Ruby Dee, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Congressman Charles B. Rangel, Common, Michael Eric Dyson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Roland S. Martin, Maurice DuBois, Lola Ogunnaike, Stephanie Jordan, Kephra Burns, Kevin Powell, Dr. Adelaide Sanford, Terrie M. Williams, and Rev. Al Sharpton, were among the more than 300 guests who turned out for the event, which was co-hosted by comedian/actress Phyllis Yvonne Stickney. Gospel music superstars Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin performed.

"With this kind of continued support, we will end the cycles of academic and social disengagement that are debilitating our communities and country," Taylor, said. "Mentoring is the answer. It is the best and most meaningful gift we can give this holiday season."
Originally founded by Taylor as "Essence Cares" in 2006 in response to Hurricane Katrina, the organization is a mentor-recruitment movement that works to fill the pipeline of youth-supporting organizations throughout the country with mentors. Its mission is to save a generation by putting a caring adult in the life of every at-risk child and those who have already fallen into peril.
National CARES Circles operate in more than 50 cities around the country such as: Anchorage, Annapolis, Austin, Augusta, Baltimore, Birmingham, Broward County (FL), Charleston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Montgomery, New York City, Oakland, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Raleigh, Sacramento, Seattle, Washington, DC and others.

May the life I live speak for me. Money is not evil,it is the LOVE of money that is evil. The life that Oprah has lived and is living has being a struggle. However, if you seek the Kingdom of God then all other things will be added unto you. I am sure with the obstacles that Oprah had to overcome, she knows how it feels to have someone to just give you a chance. We as Christians should let the generosity start with us. However, if we do not have or is not willing to give don't hinder the person who can and is willing. These kids need all the help they can get to help them become a productive citizen.

BITTER SEED OF ABRAHAM: NO, I do not agree with anything you have said in your several rambling and hateful, hate filled postings. I do not agree with your assumptions about Oprah Winfrey, I do not agree with your opinions about ALL black men, many need to do a lot of things, many are doing them, and NONE of them need your condemnation and Chritian ethics! I do not agree with your stance on Homosexuals, (Gay and Lesbians) I do not agree with your religeosity filled rants on womens choice and their choice to do with THEIR body as they feel is appropriate! I doubt I would see the world at all through the lens of hate that you obviously do? I am quite sure I would not like you personally, or even at all were we to meet? I really do not care for your using a posting on this subject page, which is on a subject of great merit by this woman with the non-profit center, and Oprahs decision to help it out very generously with a large sum of money. I do not agree with you attacking her for all the other good works that Oprah does ALL the time, ALL over the world. Period! Your a sad disgraceful example of a human being, and a pitiful miserable holy rolling bigot who should just excuse yourself and go to a church, any church and pray for forgiveness for your sorry self!

When Katrina hit... white people were 'displaced' and black people were 'refugees'.... white people who took food and other supplies for their families were 'taking care of their families', black people doing the same thing... were 'looting'.
If I were a millionaire or billionare, I would probably help more black charities... but that is because whites have always been priviledged... they have always had the upper hand.
