Quincy Jones is well known as the music legend boasting over 25 Grammy Awards and an illustrious catalog of music, which includes collaborations with all the greats (including Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles to name a few).
But one title the man, who crafted the theme song for the TV show 'Sanford and Son' and produced the movie score for 'The Color Purple', can also claim ithat he escapes death.
Bringing a most accurate definition to the term "soul survivor," the Chicago native has escaped death and misfortune on more than a few occasions.
In a recent interview with 'Newsweek,' the almost 80-year old producer --who is petitioning to become America's very first "Secretary of Arts" -- offered insight into his dodgy childhood days, mixing it up with Frank Sinatra, his very own first funeral and political support. Excerpts are below.
Black Music Notes Nov. 20

Not to mention the Wu-Tang Clansman's 2000 hit single 'Cherchez LaGhost'. Kanye West and Ne-Yo also make an appearance on the remix version of 'Back Like That.'
11/20/08: John Legend
In promotion of his recently released third album 'Evolver,' John Legend has recently kicked off his new tour featuring UK's very own Estelle. Not only are the pair wrapping up their current trek in North Carolina on December 13, Legend also confirmed that he has added additional dates from January 12 through February 7. The tour picks up in Oakland, California and ends in Atlantic City, New Jersey on February 7.
11/20/08: OutKast
Despite various setbacks, OutKast member Big Boi still has plans to release his sophomore album 'Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty.' And according to the rapper, the project's delay may very well be worth the wait. Big Boi recently revealed to 'MTV News' that in addition to his album being released in 2009, fans can also expect a solo release from Andre 3000 as well as a new OutKast album. "Me and 'Dre were on the conference call [recently]," he explained. "He's working on his album; my album is done. We're gonna wait until the top of the year - January or February - to put it out. Then 'Dre is gonna come hit y'all, and [then] we're gonna do the OutKast album. So y'all gonna get three records from the 'Kast next year." In the meantime fans can catch Big Boi on November 25 when he appears on an episode of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.'
11/20/08: 50 Cent
You can now add 50 Cent's name alongside Big Boi and Keri Hilson for artist who have delayed their albums in 2009. Fifty, whose forthcoming album 'Before I Self Destruct' was originally scheduled for a December 6 release before being pushed back to December 16, is now tentatively set for February 3. "I'm trying to leave the same way I came in," he revealed to MTV. "February 4 [2003], 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' came out. I drop this album February 3. The time frame. It used to take six to eight weeks for us to position a hip-hop record. Now, it's taking 12 to 14 weeks." Although the rap mogul expressed his satisfaction with the album's current single 'Get Up,' he did mention that he's "just looking for the opportunity to present more of my material [prior to the album's release]. It's not the strongest effort on my album; it's just a great start for me."
11/20/08: Montell Jordan
Grammy Award-nominated singer Montell Jordan returns to the music scene with his new studio album 'Let It Rain.' The new project reflects a more grown and sexy side of the R&B singer, which is a huge difference from Jordan's earlier days as he describes. "Those people that understand that the time frame that my music was originally created are now a more grown and sexy group of people," he told Eurweb.com. "We went from the college era, and the party style to becoming adults, and so that's where my music is now." And to keep in touch with the adult side of partying, Jordan reached out to the "World's Greatest Entertainer" Doug E. Fresh for the album cut entitled, 'Left Alone.' 'Let It Rain' is in stores now.
11/20/08: Lupe Fiasco
Despite releasing his debut album 'Food & Liquor' in 2006, Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco is looking to unplug his microphone following the release of his triple disc album entitled, 'LupEND.' The rapper recently made the announcement during his Halloween show in Chicago, explaining that the album's title stands for "everywhere," "nowhere" and "down here." "When you play a videogame, you can only put in three letters for your name and when the game's over, those three letters and 'END' pop up," he continued. "My next record might be my last one." Although Lupe is making plans to retire, there is no official word from his label, Atlantic Records, regarding a release date for the project.
The Wonder Years
"My dad worked as a carpenter for the black mob, called the Jones Brothers, who ran the South Side of Chicago. My earliest memories are being pinned to a fence with a switchblade. It was nuts in those days, and it still is."
Old Blue Eyes
"[Frank] Sinatra was one of those guys where he liked you or he didn't. So when he asked me to work with him, I got a bit nervous because I'd heard the stories. But we hit it off immediately, and I got to know the Frank that nobody wrote about, the guy who visited Billie Holiday in the hospital to make sure her bills were paid and who took care of Amos and Andy when they were down on their luck. He was a stand-up guy who didn't see color, and that was rare back then."
Life and Death and Life Again
"After my first [brain] aneurysm operation, they didn't think I would make it, so they planned a memorial. My doctor said I could go, but I would have to remain calm. That was hard to do with Richard Pryor, Marvin Gaye, Sarah Vaughn and Sidney Poitier singing your praises. It was at the Shrine in Los Angeles, and my neurologist sat next to me to make sure I didn't do the wrong thing."

Finally Coming Around
"Oprah [Winfrey] brought [Barack] Obama and Michelle [Obama] to my house when he was thinking of running. We sat in my kitchen and talked about his plans. I liked him a great deal. I'd just known Hillary [Clinton] longer. But I'm fully onboard with Obama-he's a cool cat, and I certainly never thought I'd live to see a black president, so you know I'm happy."
The new coffee table book, 'The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey & Passions' is on sale now.

Somebody thinks Q's money is gone? The "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" has been in syndication for years. No doubt he's still getting residuals...I'm just talking about the Fresh Prince, I'm not even talking about his other achievements.

Quincy Jones is a legend. I normally dont't engage in this small talk, but I feel it necessary to enlighten the ignorant. His sexual orientation has nothing to do with his talent, he has transformed music and musicians to their highest potential. I write lyrics and I would be so honored if anyone of his caliber took an interest in anoher survivors pespective.
I have always admired him, and always will.

The Beatles producer, George Martin, I would say was the greatest music producer, in my humble opinion.

Quincy's best work was probably "Thriller".

Having the good fortune to have met Mr Jones one time.I was surprised. I thought he was a Seattle native. Quincy's daughter was born the same day as my Granddaughter. There were two babies.I read the last name, and as I was leaning in the window, a voice said, "That your girl--She is cute." A very gracious man, "Before I could answer I heard, "Quincy, they are bringing her in now." We nodded, and he said excuse me I have to go. I read on the second child born that day, "Father Quincy Jones."

Mr. Jones is one of the lucky ones. And, one of the great ones. I hope now that Mr. Obama is in power, he will direct his efforts to directing the rest of them. Either to school, or to "prison".
From the FBI: Black males age 14 - 35, commit 56.6% of all violent crime in America while they comprise less than 3.5% of the population, and contribute less than 1/10 of 1% to the gross national product.

in this generation, if it aint hip hop, it aint about nothing to them. they need to read his book and read for themselves to appreciate people like this. people like him and the big bands he played with started hip hop, but not the hip hop that is being played now a days. if it wasnt for men such as this,we wouldn't have many of the singers we have now because he help get them started. but you have to educate yourself first on wht mr. jones has contributed to his art, and contributed he has. a mind is a terrible thing to waste. as for who he wants to love, thats his business. and im sure the man has millions.
