The North, South Carolina native, born Eartha Mae Keith, played Catwoman in the 1960s television series 'Batman,' before being blacklisted after making anti-war statements during a White House luncheon hosted by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson.
"The thing that hurts, that became anger, was when I realized that if you tell the truth - in a country that says you're entitled to tell the truth - you get your face slapped and you get put out of work," Kitt said about the incident years later in an interview with 'Essence' magazine.
On the Broadway stage, she made her debut in 1945 in 'Bal Negre.' 32 years later, she was still going strong; with the all-star musical 'Timbuktu.' She received high marks for her role in the 2000 revival of 'The Wild Party.'Her other Broadway credits include 'Shinbone Alley,' 'Jolly's Progress' and 'Nine.' (see Black Stars On Great White Way)
In the 1992 hit movie, Kitt played a most memorable role as Lady Eloise -- a rich business tycoon who has a sexual tryst with the movie's main character, played by Eddie Murphy.
Most recently, she appeared in the independent films, 'Preaching to the Choir' --alongside Patti LaBelle, Tim Reid, and Tichina Arnold – and the romantic comedy called 'And Then Came Love' – starring Vanessa Williams, Michael Boatman, and Ben Vereen.
The author of three memoirs, Kitt is survived by her daughter, Kitt Shapiro, and two grandchildren.

I was sorry to read this. One Christmas season we lost James Brown, now Eartha Kitt. I am ashamed to say that I recall her most for her role in Boomerang, and her line that still makes me laugh, "I don't have any panties on," LOL!! Rest in peace, beautiful Ms. Kitt.

My sympathy to her family and her fans. I do remember her as Catwoman on the Batman series, but I will always smile and sing along when I hear "Santa Baby". Other artists may sing it, but never the way that Eartha sang it. Rest in peace!

How sad... I hope our new first lady will take her off the black list and hang a portrait of her in the white house to redeem her name in memory, for her grandchildren.

Ms. Kitt we will miss you. My prayers go out to your family and friends, your version of Santa Baby is the only one to me. For everyone...the performance Ms. Kitt did for the Bush family a couple of years ago is spectacular...a true DIVA.

I have always adored Lady Kitt. If you haven't seen her play the title role in "Ana Lucasta," co-starring Sammy Davis, Jr. you've missed her at her best! She plays a "lady of the night" on the docks where she hooks up with sailor Sammy. Plus, there's a dance solo sequence by Sammy that's amazing! This movie is old and I don't know when it came out, I just happened to catch it on AMC one nite a long time ago and I taped it - and lost the tape. I've tried to find it online, but no luck. God bless you Eartha, you are a true original and always very underrated.
