Father's Day is here and I am more than grateful about reconnecting and having my father in my life, especially considering all the things I went through to find him. You see, I didn't grow up with my father around, like so many others. Mom and Dad parted ways when I was a baby and years later I was playing to a sold out crowd in Amsterdam when I asked if the local DJ had heard of someone named Larry Saunders, also known as "The Prophet Of Soul."
That's who I knew my biological father to be – only by name. After the show, a copy of an old album was handed to me. I didn't get the chance to listen to it until I made it back to the States.
So there I was on mom's living room floor listening to his voice and seeing his photo for the first time. I'll never forget listening to Daddy's music and what she told me about how they met and why Daddy wrote the songs he did.
I tell you, I finally saw and heard the other side of me.
I then called the guy that owns Daddy's music and he gave me his lawyer's information. That was the hardest phone call ever. I contacted the lawyer and he told me to send whatever I wanted to him. It was the coldest conversation ever.
I sent Daddy all of my music and a letter telling him that I forgive him and I didn't want anything from him. I just wanted him to know that I am keeping with family tradition and moving forward with where he left off.
He didn't call for months and by this time, I had moved to New York City.
I was giving up on the music business and took a chance on Broadway. I was cast to star in a phenomenal show about change, 'Caroline, Or Change.'
Little did I know that it was about to happen to me. So I'm in a taxi headed to my fitting and my phone rang. 'Can I speak to Lady-Cee?' (spoken in a deep southern voice). I said, 'Yes this is me.' The voice then said, 'This is your father Larry.'
I started to cry tears of joy. He was finally real to me.

I forgave him right away but I have to admit that we had one moment where I went off about him not being there. But once that happened, things got better and better.
Now my parents are friends again and every day we talk about love and music.
It took us a minute to get where we are but I am so glad to have my two best friends.
On a more somber note, Daddy almost died this year of a heart attack. After that experience, he got in shape and he's recording again. Believe it or not, he has become one of my pillars of strength and our bond gets stronger every day. And I am so grateful.
Anyone out there not ready to forgive their parents for things they have done or who are having abandonment issues, I want you to know that you are blessed to have them in your world. Give them another chance and just forgive. Say how you feel and after that, let it go and embrace them as they are. They may be too old to change – most people are – but remember they gave you life and that's the greatest gift that anyone can give you.
I'm not trying to preach because I believe people should do what they want to, but I want to end this by stating that forgiveness is so freeing. And I'm a living witness.

What a beautiful ending! We all should be willing to forgive and move forward. If you don't forgive, hold a grudge, bitterness, and hatred in your heart you will not be blessed and things will not come to past. Whatever the reason why her father left when she was little, I'm sure he is sorry and is willing to love, support, and get to know Ledisi. What a nice "Father's Day" surprise right before her very own eyes. I pray that the Father is doing well and maybe one day, they will both record together? Ledisi and her Father have a lot of catching up to do but, I know they will get there.
No, I never had this happen to me nor do I know somebody in that same situation? But I do know one thing, forgiving someone you love takes all of the weight off, takes the pain, and anger away. That's what "God" wants all of us to do FORGIVE like he forgives us for all of our sins. Lesdi is a talented, soulful, beautiful woman and I know that she is happy and complete now! "HAPPY FATHER'S DAY" to all the Fathers out there and to you Dad,"Happy Father's Day"! LOL :-)

With all the mothers who are so busy chasing money and good-times (Susan Smith, Anthony, school teachers, abortions, etc.), why don't we ever hear of them on "Mother's Day?" You mean all females who have children are Godly, upstanding, community involved, challenging the system to be fair & equal citizens?
Every "Father's Day" it's all about begging, brow-beating, and disciplining the men to be "better." If we need this treatment on our day, why don't the women get it on their day?
As if no strippers, porn stars, whores, sluts, drug-heads, thieves, corrupt political/corporate females are mothers? Turning a blind eye in the face of obvious discrimination and oppression, while passing it on to your young is bad parenting. Opening your legs before marriage is bad parenting.
The First Step of a responsible parent/female, is for the female to be brought-up to NOT practice premarital sex: the Godly and Wrathful consequences could be "deadbeat dads;" mothers struggling with single-parent finances; in other words...keep your legs closed.

Sweetie relax......she wrote a very touching testimony about finding her father and forging a new relationship with him. We dont know the angst that her mother went through with him, or he with her. Who suffered because of the absence....Ledisi. As for your other assertion that women should keep their legs closed....you got a point.....but men should also understand that if they dont want kids.......they should walk with thier own protection or simply get the snip-snip. Everybody has a dime in that dollar.

I am glad for Ledesi. I hope they can continue to grow in their father/daughter relationship. It is so interesting though how she found it necessary to let him know that she didn't want anything from him. I hear that so many times. It makes me hold a greater disdain for these deadbeat dads (and moms) who abandon on their children, the child pursues them for a relationship years later and have to convince them that they are not going to be held accountable for anything. Well, they should be accountable. Unless they have been in a coma on life support all those years they exacted a grave injustice against their children/family. But I know this a broken record. I look at Ledisi's beautiful face and see how happy she is to have her father in her life now and u think well all is well. But this issue is being glossed over. As long as they are allowed to perputrate this evil crime against innocent children they will continue to do so. He should hang his head in shame.

I READ YOUR COMMENT IN REGARDS TO FATHERS.HOWEVER, I MUST BE FRANK WITH YOU. YOU SOUND LIKE YOU HAVE ALOT OF BITTERNESS, ANGER, HURT, RESENTMENT AND UNFORGIVENESS LIVING WITHIN YOU TOWARDS THE MALE GENDER WETHER IT WAS DONE THROUGH THE FATHER IMAGE OR THE HUSBAND INMAGE OR EVEN THE BOYFRIEND IMAGE AND KEEPING IT REAL AND NOT LEAVING NOTHING UNSAID, THE UNCLE, THE STEPDAD, THE MOMMA BOYFRIEND, THE BROTHER, THE COUSIN TRUTHFULLY SPEAKING, ETC. I GATHER FROM YOUR STANDPOINT YOU FEEL THAT THE INDIVIUAL IN QUESTION SHOULD STILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR NOT BEING, WHICH IS A CLEAR PERCEPION THAT YOU HAVEN'T EVEN BEGUN THE PROCESS OF FORGIVESS TOWARDS THE VERY PEOPLE THAT HAS PUT YOU IN THIS STATE OF MIND. FORGIVENESS OUT WEIGHS ACCOUNTABILITY WHEN IT COMES TO THE HEALING OF A GENERATION WHICH INCREASES THE CHANCES OF A STRONG NATION. I AM MORE THAN SURE THAT THE MALE IN QUESTION DOES HOLD HURT, FEAR, UNCERTAINTY WHICH SOMETIMES COMES FROM HE THE UNFORGIVENESS OF HIS BLOOD ELDERS. HOWEVER, YOU MUST FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THAT NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU HOLD THAT PERSON ACCOUNTABLE IT CAN NOT CORRECT NOR BRING BACK THE PAST, IN WHICH, IT LEAVES YOU AND THE PERSON IN QUESTION CONSTANTLY TRYING TO EMOTIONALLY, PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY AND SPIRITUALLY DISTROY ONE ANOTHER OR SHOULD I SAY TWO GENERATIONS?(UNFORGIVENESS) I AM GOING TO PRAY TO THE FATHER THROUGH THE SWEETEST NAME I KNOW(JESUS) THAT HE WILL TOUCH YOU IN A MIGHTY WAY. I ALSO WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT IT'S NOT A CRIME TO STUPIDLY WALK AWAY FROM YOUR KIDS, BUT YET AN ILLNESS(BUT YET UNEXCUSABLE?). HOW DO YOU DARE TELL THE MAN TO HOLD HIS HEAD DOWN IN DEFEAT! SISTER, WE CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST JESUS WHO STRENGHTHENS US! AND TO YOU DRED SCOTT WITH A FEATURED COMMENT, YOU MADE SOME VERY GOOD POINTS IN YOUR COMMENT, HOWEVER, ALOT COULD HAVE BEEN LEFT UNSAID. A SHOUT OUT TO YOU "DIMEPIECE" WELL SAID AND GOD BLESS YOU BOO!

Let me guess..you're a deadbeat right? Either that or you are supporting one. What's the matter, did I hit too close to home? And all that mumbo jumbo you spouted about my personal bitterness, anger, blah, blah, blah,..Yeah..Noted. Yes this person and all perps like him should be held accountable,so that maybe this cycle can be broken. We are so accustomed to abnormal behavior that when normal behavior is expected - we think it's abnormal..too much to ask. Well it's not too much to ask a father or mother to take responsibility for a child they brought into the world. You are 100% wrong when you say that forgiveness outweighs accountability. I do not doubt that the name of Jesus is the sweetest name you know, but I find it hard to believe that you actually call on that name on a daily basis. You err because you do not know the scriptures. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Not even God will forgive you unless you seek it and are responsible/accountable for your wrongdoing. Forgiveness does NOT outweigh accountability, it works in tandem with it. And you are equally as wrong when so arrogantly state that it is not a crime to walk away for your kids. It is a crime! A crime against all that is holy, humanity and society. I don't know where you live, but on planet earth and in these United States of America a parent can be arrested and convicted for failure to pay child support. Why? Because it CRIME to neglect your kids, not a sickness - a sin and a crime. And further, I did not tell the man to hold his head down in defeat - I said in shame. Shame that would hopefully lead to repentance, reconciliation and victory for all. You did get one thing right - we can do all things thru Christ who strengthens us. One of those things should be to live up to our responsibilities and hold ourselves and each other accountable when we do not live up to them.
