Phylicia Rashad: Latest Broadway Show Shuttered

The run is over for the award-winning play 'August: Osage County,' the latest critically acclaimed production to end its run on Broadway.

Currently starring Tony Award-winning actress Phylicia Rashad, the Tracy Letts' family drama will shutter its doors at the Music Box Theatre on June 28.

The three-hour-plus show, which follows a dysfunctional Oklahoma family, played 648 performances and 18 previews since opening in 2007.

On May 26, Rashad took over for Estelle Parsons in the role of the matriarch, Violet Weston. But the addition of 'The Cosby Show' actress wasn't enough to significantly improve ticket sales. According to Variety, although 'August' recouped its $2.5 million capitalization in about six months, just last week, actors performed in front of an audience that was at 60 percent capacity.

So what's next for Rashad?

BV Newswire previously reported that the Jenny Craig spokeswoman will resume her role as Big Mama in the Debbie Allen-helmed London production of 'A Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.'

The all-black ensemble, which includes James Earl Jones, Sanaa Lathan and Adrian Lester, will begin previews at the Novello Theatre on Nov. 21.

As for 'August: Osage County,' it's not all over. An 18-city national tour will commence at the Denver Center for Performing Arts on July 24, with Parsons returning as Violet.
