If you paid any attention to mainstream theater critics, you wouldn't plunk down your hard-earned money to see Ashanti's big theater debut in the City Center revival of the classic musical 'The Wiz.'
The New York Times said the Thomas Kail show was "busily energetic and yet full of dead ends" in a fierce review that culminated by calling Ashanti's performance as Dorothy " vocally accomplished yet hollow, as if she'd been given the song the day before and learned it by rote for one of the middle rounds of 'American Idol.'"
Giving it two and a half out of five stars, the New York Post – home of the racist Obama monkey shooting cartoon – referred to Ashanti's on-stage presence as a "handicap," adding that pop singer has a sweet voice that can turn powerful when required, but that she sticks to the same expression -- blank befuddlement.
And even the New York Daily News didn't mince words about the Glen Cove, N.Y.-reared Grammy winner: "The over-the-title R&B diva is hit and miss -- a mighty singer with a voice that soars, but a limited actress whose face registers apprehension, delight, anger, whatever, with scarcely a shift in expression."
With those critiques, its obvious that the theater world's most revered media outlets weren't impressed with the headliner of this latest revival of one of Broadway's most-prized musicals.
But when you think about it, it is a tall order.
Black Music Notes April 24
4/24/09 Kirk Franklin
Fighting the fight has turned out to be a good thing for gospel music sensation Kirk Franklin. During the 40th annual GMA Dove Awards, the platinum-selling pint-size holy roller's latest opus, 'The Fight of My Life,' won the award for urban album of the year. Considered the "biggest night in gospel music," the Dove Awards is the longest running and most prestigious televised ceremony recognizing achievement in all genres of Christian and gospel music. Some of the industry's biggest acts came out for the event, which took place at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn., on April 23. According to Franklin's longtime publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, this is the singer's 13th Dove Award honor.
4/24/09 Raekwon
Fellow Wu-Tang Clan rhyme slinger Raekwon has finally found a home with EMI Music to release his long-awaited, highly-anticipated album 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2' this summer. "The wait is finally over," he said in a statement. "Words cannot describe how extremely happy I am to work with EMI Music to put out my album." The album, which is the followup to Rae's 1995 classic solo debut, will feature collaborations by Dr. Dre, RZA, J Dilla, Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, Bun B, and The Game among others.
4/21/09: Smokie Norful
Gospel music dynamo Smokie Norful has a reason to smile. The Little Rock, Ark., native's latest project is the top-selling gospel album in the country. The 'Live' opus debuted at number one on Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart this week – netting the Grammy Award winner his second chart-topping debut and third number one project. "Smokie's hard work, talent and commitment to the ministry shine through on his new album," stated Ken Pennell, president of EMI Gospel, who released the project last week. 'Live' was recorded in front of a standing room audience at the Cannon Center in Memphis, Tenn. The 10-track CD was produced by Norful and Jason Tyson and includes guest performances by Tony Award winner Heather Headley and Stellar Award winner Tye Tribbett.
4/21/09: Kanye West
With his debut Nike shoe, "The Air Yeezy," in stores, Kanye West is looking to capitalize off his new endorsement with a cameo in this year's NBA playoffs. West's latest single, 'Amazing,' with rapper Young Jeezy is featured in a new NBA playoffs commercial promoting this year's slogan: "Where amazing happens." Recently, West and Jeezy wrapped up shooting the single's video in Hawaii, which was directed by Hype Williams.
4/21/09: Keyshia Cole
R&B-singer-turned-reality-star Keyshia Cole is gearing up for yet another tour in support of her latest album, 'A Different Me.' Beginning May 13 in Cincinnati, Cole, alongside singer-songwriter Keri Hilson, The Dream, and Bobby Valentino, will hit the road for a 20-city trek. For Cole, connecting with fans through touring is the "most intimate" aspect of her career. "The most gratifying thing for me in show business is having the ability to be intimate with my fans. Singing directly to them is the most intimate thing I can do," she said in a statement. 'A Different Me' tour ends June 20 in Los Angeles.
4/21/09: T.I.
As T.I. prepares to serve his one-year sentence on May 19 for felony weapons charges, he also has plans to re-release his platinum-selling album 'Paper Trail.' 'MTV News' reports the Grammy Award-winning rapper will include five new songs, including collaborations with The Dream, Ciara and a unreleased verse from Kanye West. A release date for the project was not revealed at press time.
4/21/09: Black Eyed Peas
Back by popular demand, Grammy Award-winning group the Black Eyed Peas have finally released their latest single, 'Boom Boom Pow,' from their forthcoming album, 'The E.N.D.' According to group member Fergie, the song is "kind of to the left" for a first single, which she says transcended into the concept for the video's single. "The concept is the Peas' birth into the digital afterlife," she recently told 'MTV News.' "So the transformation is us going into a sort of birth or cocoon and coming out the other end as forms of energy. It's a parallel to the music industry. Now everything is downloaded." 'The E.N.D' (The Energy Never Dies) is set to hit stores in June.
4/21/09: LeToya Luckett
Former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett is readying the release of her sophomore solo album, 'Lady Love,' on June 23. True to the album's title, Luckett focuses on the many aspects of love and relationships expressed from a woman's point of view -- a topic contrary to her 2006 debut. "The first album was more about getting adjusted to being solo and finding my lane," Luckett explained to the 'Hollywood Reporter.' "It's still about soulful feel-good music. However, I didn't want to be stuck in a comfort zone. I wanted to be freer, more daring vocally and lyrically, to reflect the situations I've experienced."
4/21/09: Cam'ron
Despite being on hiatus for few years, Harlem-bred MC Cam'ron is set to make his return to the hip-hop scene next month with his new album, 'Crime Pays.' The former Dipset front man recently revealed to Billboard that he's taking advantage of the World Wide Web to help generate interest for the project. "The idea was to put out a video every week to warm people up to the album," he said. "I didn't care about putting out singles. I just wanted people to know the album was coming. That's what I love about the Internet. Instead of having to wait on radio to play your song or TV to play your video, I can use the Internet as a tool to get my music out earlier." 'Crime Pays,' which features 'I Used to Get It in Ohio' and 'Cookies and Apple Juice,' hit stores May 12 via Asylum Records.
4/21/09: Sean "Diddy" Combs
Multifaceted media mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs recently landed an upcoming role in 'Get Him to the Greek.' The Nicholas Stoller-directed film, which also stars Russell Brand, finds Combs playing the role of Sergio, a record label executive, while Brand plays an out-of-control rock star named Aldous Snow. 'Get Him to the Greek' is scheduled to hit theaters next year.
Beefing up the cast with powerhouse singer-actresses such as Tichina Arnold and Dawnn Lewis seemed to be a step in the right direction for the New York run. And having Tony Award winner LaChanze in the mix added some value to the marquis.
But the jury was out on whether the show will ever light up Broadway again. (City Center is a few block away – but it not considered Broadway Theater.)
Today, it was announced that Orlando Jones will be replaced by Colman Domingo in the title role.
Domingo is a dynamic performer who won raves last year as one of the stars of the 2008 Broadway musical 'Passing Strange.' He will step in as The Wizard for the final six performances of the show.
If replacements are abound for a long-awaited Broadway run, some wonder if Dorothy should be recast.
What say you?
WHO SHOULD PLAY DOROTHY IF AND WHEN 'THE WIZ' RETURNS TO BROADWAY?

I am not surprised either. Dorothy's character in the "Wiz" was TOO BIG FOR HER FROM THE JUMP! She was WARNED and she FAILED to LISTEN! I bet the singers and music drowned her voice out! When I saw the video clip BV put out few weeks or so ago, Ashanti didn't show no emotion, she didn't hold onto her words in the song, no vibrato, I didn't hear any RANGE in her voice, and didn't put her HEART, SOUL, & FOOT in the song? Now the singers and dancers, that performed are talented and I know they all made the show. Ashanti has an OK voice and she has potential but, somebody should have played this part? I hope that the next "Wiz", Mrs. Jennifer Hudson will play the part(by then she would have had her baby). That woman right there will BRING IT HOME!
The selection above wasn't' in my opinion "Wiz Material" except for maybe one person, Fantasia. I would select Fantasia as #1 and number's 2-4 I can't place anybody? Sorry? I haven't heard KeKe Palmer sing before, Lil Jamia, she is good but not ready for the "Wiz" Raven is good but I can't see her singing in the "Wiz" , Ashanti is out of the question, and Solange? Did BV just add Solange Knowles? Knowles should not be in this selection at all! What is she doing on here? Girlfriend is not Broadway material, fo sure! Ashanti put herself out there and has to learn to take criticism from all Media. Ashanti is beautiful and has an ok voice and will make it somewhere, but not here on Broadway. That is my opinion.

Nobody on that list should be Dorothy. Jasmine Sullivan should play Dorothy. Has anybody heard her sing 'Home'? That girl can blow.

The Wiz
I forgot about Jasmine Sullivan. Yes that woman can blow. But no, I haven't' heard her sing "Home"? I have to check that out. She would be perfect to play the character of Dorthy. I like Jasmine but, the talented R&B songstress, doesn't get enough credit, air play, and don't see her in the spotlight that much? What's up with that? I will be watching her on the BET Awards.

Why would anyone expect anything else from Ashanti? Did anyone see her in the Muppet Wizard of Oz? It wasn't any better. Bottom line, she needs to stick with what she's good at. I'm not quite sure what that is but she needs to find it. Maybe I'm being to hard. Maybe she just needs lessons. I think the role should definitely be recast.

I endured a 4 hour bus ride to NYC two weeks ago to see "The Wiz". It was apparent Ashanti had voice lessons since her live singing improved 1000% after I saw her at the Essence Music Fest about 6 years ago. However, she was horrible in "The Wiz". She is not an actress and should have never been cast in the role of Dorothy. Is Ashanti even alive? She could not even pretend to change her facial expressions and body language for every play scene. How fantastic "The Wiz" could be with a real actress playing Dorothy! On the bright side, I was absolutely blown away by Tichina Arnold, Dawn Lewis, LaChanze, and Joshua Henry as the Tinman!!!! Wow, they are professional, seasoned performers.

one of these things is not like the other...um...please don't torture us with solange trying to sing and especially act....it's enough that her non-acting sister saturates the market...and might I add....CAN'T ACT!....None of these sistas are ready for the wiz....I think Tichina Arnold would kick butt...she can sing...and she's a realllllll ACTRESS

Well I got to say, that singing performance was AMAZING! I didn't know that Ashanti had such a strong voice? I actually, got goose bumps. She didn't over due the song, she didn't try to copy the singer Ms. Stephanie Mills style, and did it "Ashanti's Way"! For a second, I really thought in the above pic the woman featured along with Ashanti was Ms. Stephanie Mills? I read, and that was her mother. I admit, I was one of those people that commented on her a month ago on the BV Blogs and said that she wouldn't be able to sing in a Broadway Musical. I was so wrong. I guess when she first started people didn't look at her as this good vocalist and focused more so on her looks? Ashanti has matured into a wonderful talented singer/actress, and is ready to go to the next step in her career. She is almost there. "
UMM yeah...Leave the girl alone it is her first real broadway performances who know 5 years now she maybe a top notch address. This is a great way for Ashanti to gain experience. Sometime you win and sometimes you lose but it is all a lesson learn.
On another note be consistent.
