The Essence Music Festival – considered that nation's largest annual gathering of African-American music and culture – marked its 15th anniversary this past weekend in New Orleans with the biggest names in entertainment and the nation's most influential speakers, artists, authors and leaders. Widely known as the "Party With A Purpose," the 2009 Essence Music Festival attracted a record number of attendants who partook in daily free activities and empowerment seminar at the Ernest Morial Convention Center, and nightly entertainment at the Louisiana Superdome.
This year's performers included Beyoncé, Maxwell, Anita Baker, John Legend, Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, Lionel Richie, Al Green, Salt N Pepa, Charlie Wilson, Ledisi, Jazmine Sullivan, Janelle Monae, Raphael Saadiq, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, The Brand New Heavies, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Teena Marie, En Vogue, Steve Harvey, Zap Mama and DJ Soul Sister. Essence Empowerment Seminars participants include Steve Harvey, Bill Cosby, Roland Martin, Soledad O'Brien, Tom Joyner, Juanita Bynum, Ben Jealous, Donna Brazile, Bishop T.D. Jakes and Rev. Al Sharpton.

I thought the 'party with a purpose' is TJ's sky shows or cruises or reunions in FL ? Doesnt he have that phrase trademarked?
Essence needs 2 step it up. Have NEW speakers. Year after year they have TD jake spewing his bull. We're in a worldwide recession so they shoulda had the money coach there or Lynette calphoni. Why not have Hill Harper there?

Yes...It was fantastic....Janelle Monae was so great...that picture she painted on stage she was handing to my sister when some feen came up and ripped it from her...at least my sis has the paint on her hands and a picture for the memory book! LOL
