With eight consistent films under his belt, Tyler Perry has overcome the odds of his upbringing and earned a reputation as one of Hollywood's most relentless and profitable directors. As his dear friend and mentor, Oprah Winfrey recently stated, "Do not play him small because he is not just some lucky rich Negro-turned-black man." This and much more was all discussed on tonight's episode of the long-running newsmagazine show '60 Minutes,' where the critically acclaimed director-actor discussed an array of topics including being abused by his father, Emmitt, as a child to firing back at Spike Lee's controversial comments comparing Perry's body of work to "coonery and buffoonery."

King of the Hill and Married With Children are both comedies that are about sterotypes about whites. I've never heard one white person be offended by them and they definetly don't put them in a positive light. We have to be able to laugh at ourselves like all other cultures do without over analizing everything as being offensive. Comedy is about exagerating things. There are people in the world who wil have a negative view of blacks no matter what. Some people are just ignorant. We al need to understand comedy is just like everything else- not everything is for everyone.

I totally agree with what you are saying. This is like when Bill Cosby was trying to get the black community start taking an interest in ourselves. He was trying to get us to move past what we are used to and build ourselves up. There were people trying to defend our black men being in prison. We have so many talented black actors and actresses in Hollywood to bring intelligent, witty, and thought provoking films to the big screen. Why are we selling ourselves short. I must admit, I can't stand TP's tv shows. The actors are awful, the scripts are bad and sometimes I can see the microphones throughout the shows. For God's sake, everyone knows that The Cosby show was a HUGE success. Why not get some advice from Bill or get some of his old writers to come in and make some improvements. Thank God that Spike Lee had the guts to come out and say what alot of people are thinking.

What I don't appreciate is that we have to take sides against two extremely talented Black men. Both have the right and responsibility to produce movies illustrating their take on Black reality. I respect both of their views. I understand that they come from two different perspectives of the images we see on the screen but in my opinion we can use both to learn. The media always wants us to bash our fellow man. Do not take sides, be open minded, accept both brothers artistry. Spike has made some incredible movies too and he has a right to his opinion. Perhaps in the future they can collaborate on a movie.

I understand what Spike Lee is saying, Tyler Perry needs to grow beyond the "Madea" character in his movies and take it to the next level.
Tyler Perry is making money and this works for him, but it would be nice to see some growth as he directs/produce films. Most are the same ole same ole storyline, characters, etc. Gets kind of lame after a while. jmo

TYLER, KEEP ON DOING A GREAT JOB!! YOU ARE TALENTED AND WE ALL KNOW THE MADEA CHARACTER IS FOR LAUGHS. You brought smiles, laughter to many MILLIONS OF people. Keep doing what you do, we love it. Spike Lee made movies of black women (Halle Berry) as crack heads, black man leaving his family. Another movie Spike Lee made with a girl sexing every man she knows. So please stop it!! To all HATERS, get over it! Stop HATING!!

I hear U on that LadyJNew York, we pretty much share the same oppinion on TPs work. And Spike is my dude yo, trust me I luv everything he do. But that wuz catty tho, str8 up & down. He could've really kept that to himself. He don't need 2B critisizing TP like that. On 1 hand, alota folks just ain't feelin' Spike right now. And 2nd, that just proves to "The Man" that there's no unity among us, especially when we've reached a certian level of success. IMO, instead of dissin' he need 2B tryin 2 colabo wit the guy, cuz h8 him or luv him, the boi hot right now.
Shout 2 BK 718 all day frm the cradle 2 the grave baby!!!!!!

I enjoy both Tyler and Spike it is a blessing to see Tyler's financial success I wish Spike would have met face to face with Tyler we as people of color need to support each other all white directors don't do the same type of films so why should we be critical because one has found success make a good drama we will come out and support a lot of my friends say they don't like Spike's movies it doesn't make them dumb people like what they like
