Grammy Award winning R&B supergroup Boyz II Men (l-r Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman and Nathan Morris) were on hand for the official debut of Princess Tiana (of the forthcoming animated movie 'The Princess and the Frog') at the Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on Oct. 26, 2009. The former Motown Records hit-makers visited the world's most famous amusement destination as part of Disneyworld's annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, where they performed a string of hits during the "Eat to the Beat" event. Earlier in the day, the 'End of the Road' singers helped welcome Princess Tiana during her theme park debut, which included an official procession, a New Orleans-inspired second line parade, and a 15 minute musical presentation. As with lots of people on here I too am pretty happy that Disney is finally making a black princess. (I'm African American by the way) Don't get me wrong I'm in my 20's so I grew up on Disney, but am I the only one that sees something wrong with what they're doing? Contrary to what you may see, Disney had been putting out Black characters for YEARS!! they've just all been characterized as ANIMALS (panthers, monkeys, hyena's...) In my opinion the whole movie is one big stereotype. Answer me this...The first Disney princess comes and she a sassy, savvy Lil thing from the south that turns into an ANIMAL! things that make you say Hmmm right??
Just wanna make sure people don't forget that although Disney brings some good messages and is entertaining they're out to make $money$ and money alone!
OH! and its not just Blacks Disney does this too. ever seen Mulan, Aladdin or Pocahontas?

True, this is just a opinion, a fair one if you ask me but do we really want a Disney black princess to fall in line with this tradition? http://www.feministing.com/archives/018581.html
Some critically ambitious folks have put their racial analysis of Disney out there, some even available on youtube that examines the racist, sexist, and anti-semitic overtones in Disney films and the man himself.
I'm not trying to dash chilhood's here but as an adult, I see that Disney hides behind a magic that only reinforces pernicious stereotypes. I'm sorry, but it's always been mindless entertainment to me.
Not to say that all media products have to push radical political agendas (the Muppets and Charlie Brown certainly didn't but I found it highly superior even as a child) but Disney is this overwhelming force that relentlessly pigeon holes little girls as docile, little princesses and little boys should be overbearing patriarchs.
I smell suspect with this "first black princess." First, what took them so long if they were truly invested in diversity, inclusion, and the humanity of all people (let us not forget that all Disney cartoon characters to be interpreted as 'black' have always been animals up to this point). And second, which is an extension of the first, they finally catch up to the idea that African Americans are a major target market for mass consumerism so why not inject more money into their corporation by pushing for black visibility in its franchise.
Am I supposed to be impressed?
Honestly everyone, love Disney, hate it, but don't let it get a free pass without any introspective thought.

At the end of the day does it matter to your baby if Disney took forever to add a Black Princess or does the smile on her face mean more knowing that a Disney Princess named Tiana looks just like her. Choice your battles people, there are more important issues than this!
