The 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards had some unexpected guest appearances from two hip hop heavyweights, Jay-Z and Eminem. Taped earlier this month in Atlanta's Boisfeuillet Jones Civic Center, Jay-Z helped get the party started by opening the show alongside Young Jeezy, who performed 'As Real as It Gets.'
The surprise performance wasn't the only reason Hova took to the stage. He also beat out the likes of Lil Wayne, Drake, T.I. and Kanye West for the MVP of the Year Award, which was the first of his four awards. The ceremony also showcased captivating performances from Goodie Mob, Snoop Dogg, Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, Mario, and Gucci Mane,
Eminem's appearance -- on one of the show's pre-taped rap ciphers-- featured a jaw-dropping freestyle that left many in attendance, including DJ Drama, speechless. "Wow! I need to hear the unedited version!" Drama told 'MTV News.' "The crowd in the house went crazy! They were so excited to even see Eminem in a cipher. He's one of the greatest spitters of all time."

Veteran rapper Ice Cube received the "I AM HIP HOP" Icon Award, which is presented to an individual who has made notable contributions of outstanding significance to the hip-hop community. This year's "Hip Hop Cares" segment spotlighted 50 Cent's G-Unity Foundation, Busta Rhymes' affiliation with RockCorps, Jim Jones service to Entertainers Alliance for Education Foundation and Jeezy's Street Dreams Foundation.
