Bryan Michael Cox: Battling It Out In New McDonald's DJ Competition, Among Other Things

Earlier this fall., McDonald's kicked off an all-star DJ competition called McDonald's Flavor Battle – pitting three big music names against each other.

DJ Spinderella of Salt 'N' Pepa fame, Grammy Award-winning producer Bryan Michael Cox and Miami-based DJ Irie were each chosen by the world's most beloved fast food chain to represent a famous McDonald's burger. Ultimately, the people will get to choose who has the best music mix over at McDonald's 365Black.com – a website dedicated towards celebrating African-American culture and achievement all year around.

On Nov. 6, the trio promoted the national campaign at New York's plush pool hall, Slate.

Miami Heat's DJ Irie, who is the only official DJ for a pro-basketball team, represents the newest burger, the Angus Third Pounder. Irie is also Oscar winner Jamie Foxx's DJ.

DJ Spinderella, who is back in the studio working on a new Salt 'N' Pepa album, told the BV Newswire, "I love the fact that McDonald's is shining a spotlight on the DJ."

"I represent the Big Mac – there's nothing more to say...it's a classic and I'm classic [because] I've been doing my thing for a lot of years. It's my favorite burger of all and it's a perfect fit."

As for Atlanta-based record producer Cox, he's less about winning the competition and just humbled to be in such good company.

"initially it's like I DJ, but we all love the craft and they are known DJs [so] to be in the company of them validates me. If I win, cool, if I don't, whatever," he laughed.

Cox, who has penned tracks for Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and Destiny's Child, likens himself to his McDonald's burger the Double Quarter Pounder with cheese, "It's one of the smallest in the franchise, but one of the most popular [and] though I'm a little guy, I'm very popular in the field."

In between developing two artists on Capitol Records, he's busy working on new albums for Monica and Usher.

Cox turns up on several episodes of Monica's new BET reality show 'Still Standing' and is executive producing her new album of the same name.

"Hopefully, we will have it finished in a month or so, so we can have a February album release date," he shared. "I think Monica is very comfortable in her womanhood now. She has been in the business since she was 13 and on the show you get to see that she is in a great place and willing to talk about it."

As for Usher, Cox says the 'Confessions' singer will continue to let fans in on what he's going through in his personal life.

"Usher, I think just happens to be very attached to his music [and] you can see directly what it is going on in his life through his music," he said. "Usher is like a pop artist, but he really is like a soul man and if he could just sit on stage and just be a crooner, I think he would. He wants to write about matters of the heart and I think for him it's therapeutic and I don't think he is going to stop doing it."

But, the 31-year old songwriter is quick to note that didn't fare well for the newly-divorced, father of two with his last offering.

"I think people are receiving his new record well and I think he is going to be alright this time. I think it was overkill last time and that's the beautiful thing when he gets his lifetime achievement award."

Next up, B. Cox -- as he is simply known -- will wrap his solo debut, 'The Love Exposed,' which will be accompanied with a book with coinciding chapters. He's planning to test out the new material later this month in his hometown of Houston and "see what happens."

The McDonald's Flavor Battle wraps in Nov. 22. One lucky person, who votes for their favorite Flavor Battle DJ, will win a trip to the Sprite Step Off National Finals step team competition this January.
