Denzel Washington is returning to the Great White Way.
The two-time Oscar-winning actor will play the lead role in a revival of August Wilson's 'Fences.'
Producers Carole Shorenstein Hays and Scott Rudin told the Associated Press that the play will open in April at a theater to be announced. The production will be directed by Kenny Leon, who also directed Wilson's 'Radio Golf' and 'Gem of the Ocean.'
Although there have been no other casting announcements, there are talks that Queen Latifah and Audra McDonald are on the short list to play the female lead. The original 1987 production of 'Fences' starred James Earl Jones as patriarch Troy Maxson, Mary Alice as his wife and Courtney B. Vance as his son. It won both the Tony Award for best play and the Pulitzer Prize for drama.
Washington, who cut his teeth doing New York theater, was last on Broadway in a 2005 revival of 'Julius Caesar' in which he played Brutus. That show, while receiving mixed reviews, was a box-office draw.
Washington's most recent movie, 'The Taking of the Pelham 123,' is now available on DVD.

Troy Maxson is the role that most Black actors over fifty yearn to portray--in any venue, in any town. I was privileged to do the role while a college professor, and it remains the most memorable theatric experience of my life. I beliieve that Denzel will soar as he reveals the layers and complexity of Fences. I can but hope that Denzel will consider a limited tour of key cties or perhaps HBCUs.

I had the pleasure of seeing Denzel in a play called "Checkmates" several years ago in Westwood, CA before his big breakout. I also saw "Fences" in New York years ago, but Billy D. Williams had the lead role that replaced James E. Jones.
I'm looking forward to seeing what Denzel will bring to the character of Troy Maxson.

To the fans of Denzel Washington
Let write to the any organization that are representing the planning of the play"Fences" on Broadway that the tickets be at a reasonable price. Denzel has many projects that will pay him well. I have over 150 from Washington DC who would like to see him. They will only come to New York if the tickets are not so expensive. I came to see Fantasia in the Color Purple for $105.00 and those were Orchestra Seats. So we are just waiting for the final arrangements to be made and hope they are made soon. Thank you
