The stories and revelations of women who are associated with rich and powerful men have always become insatiable fodder for entertainment and media buffs, alike. From hit cable TV series ('Real Housewives of Atlanta') to hit motion pictures ('The First Wives Club'), people stay interested.
Now that we've seen her estranged husband try his hand at reality-based TV, basketball superstar Shaquille O'Neal's spouse Shaunie O'Neal has something to offer.
Today, VH1 announced plans to premiere 'Basketball Wives,' a behind-the-scenes look at the glamorous lives of professional basketball players wives set to premiere on March 15, 2010.
O'Neal, who serves as Executive Producer, will be featured on a 30-minute episode of the series along with wives and ex-wives of superstars including Jennifer Williams (wife of Eric Williams), Evelyn Lozada (ex-fiancé of Antoine Walker), Mesha O'Neal (wife of Jermaine O'Neal), Royce Reed (the former Orlando Magic and Miami Heat dancer, is the mother of Orlando Magic superstar Dwight Howard's son) and Faith Rain (Udonis Haslem's girlfriend)."Having been around these remarkable women for several years, I have always recognized that behind every NBA star is a strong, exceptional woman, one who must deal with the unique challenges of being married to the game as well as the player," O'Neal said. "I am happy to be teaming with... VH1 in bringing this entertaining and enlightening world to television."
The O'Neals were married Dec. 26, 2002. Her maiden name is Va'Shaundya Nelson. The couple have four children (Shareef, Amirah, Shaqir, and Me'arah) with two others from previous relationships. While the family currently resides on Star Island in Miami, Florida and have maintained a residence in Windermere, Florida (a northwest Orlando suburb, where the Tiger Woods domestic altercation transpired), they've become black gossip blog mainstays for their alleged marital woes.
On Sept. 4, 2007, O'Neal filed for divorce from Shaunie in a Miami-Dade Circuit court. She later said that the couple had gotten back together and that the divorce was withdrawn. However, the Associated Press reported that she filed an intent to divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, last month.
Production on the series begins this month.

Another reality show is just what we need to see. There does not seem like much chance we will see anything of value or be enlightened too much. Soon as something happens, it is on the internet a few mintues later, what (positive or constructive) could this show possibly provide everyone does not already know?
Will the wives show everyone what day to day life is with an NBA player, superstar or not? Or will the show focus on dishing dirt, name calling and accusations about who is sleeping with whom outside of their relationships? Nothing new there either because that information is posted as soon as it happens also.
Will women give lessons on how to trick players into relationships with unplanned pregnacies, (wink wink) and get their money by hiring slick unprincipled lawyers? We are watching that on the news now with Shaq already. Anyone who wants to watch gold diggers do what they do, have at it. I am just glad college basketball, bowl games and other shows are on. This new show sounds like something I am going to be glad to turn off.

Has no one wondered how this uneducated, non-working mother of six can afford to executive produce any television show? How did she get the funds to do this? Can she shoot a free throw, dribble a basketball or call out a defense?

This show in spite of it's unpopularity (about 80% of users saying they won't watch the show)has succeeded in it's intention. Generate a buzz! The purpose of a show like this is not to cast the best educated, best behaved or even real wives. Every NBA player is not married and most have baby mamas. Once the show starts there will be something there to depict an NBA players life. This will generate discussions, introspective reflections and second thoughts in the players mind.
I am not trying to make excuses for the players. All of the postings that I have read so far have been very critical of the characters of these players. One thing that is missing is the background of these players. Most grew up without a father figure in the family. A show like this will only help them reflect on what it means to be a family man even if the women who play their wives are baby mamas.

Are you kidding me!!! Uneducated, untalented, groupies who were conniving enough to get pregnant by tall, atheletic, immature millionares. Another sad statment about what we like to watch on tv.

I think she really needs to get a life, her focus should be on her children, making a real life for herself, and not for TV entertainment. The money she has, spend it on something that is truely a blessing to help others who are having a really hard life now. Mrs. Oneal how about opening a shelter for abuse children, shelter for abuse women and their children, and watch how GOD will bless you. I dont care about seeing other famous women with their low down dirty laundry. Enough already, do something Postive and GOD is going to Bless you for.Stop being Greedy, you and the rest of your crew.

IS SHE STILL EVEN A WIFE??? WHY WOULD SHE DO A SHOW IF SHE IS NO LONGER MARRIED TO THE ATHLETE? I DON'T GET IT. AM I MISSING SOMETHING? WHAT ABOUT "REAL EX-HOUSEWIVES OF PHILANDERING ATHLETES."?
