Viola Davis: Academy Award Nominee to Join Denzel Washington in 'Fences' on Broadway

As of late, Viola Davis has been a fixture on the big screen -- earning an Academy-Award nomination for her short role in the movie adaptation of 'Doubt,' last year, and more recently in starring in the Jamie Foxx-film 'Law Abiding Citizen.'

The acclaimed thespian is now will preparing for her return to Broadway opposite Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington in August Wilson's 'Fences.'

As previously reported, Kenny Leon, who directed the Broadway productions of August Wilson's 'Radio Golf,' 'Gem of the Ocean,' and the Tony Award-winning revival of 'A Raisin in the Sun,' will direct 'Fences.'

Although Audra McDonald and Queen Latifah were rumored for the role, Leon said he couldn't be happier with casting Davis in the 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning play..

"Of course Viola is one of my favorite actors on the planet. We last worked together off-Broadway on 'Everybodys Ruby' at the Public," Leon old the BV Newswire today. "I can't wait to have her and Denzel in the rehearsal hall to collaborate on creating true magic. She is also a true Wilsonian soldier and really gets the musicality and poetry of August Wilson."

"The producers have been really supportive of assembling the best cast possible and with the addition of Viola," he added. "I think our production becomes not only a hot ticket but allows us to showcase the incredible talent of two of America's most amazing artists."

The Saint Mathews, South Carolina native previously won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her performance in Wilson's 'King Hedley II. In 'Fences,' she will play Rose Maxson, the wife of a Pittsburgh sanitation worker who confronts her husband, Troy, over a child he fathered with another woman.

Leon, the founding artistic director for Atlanta-based True Colors Theatre Company, just opened a show in Washington, D.C. called 'StickFLY,' but has been busy with television projects since directing the critically-acclaimed film adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry's 'A Raisin in the Sun,' In addition to recently directing an episode of the Jennifer Love-Hewitt drama 'Ghost Whisperer' for CBS, he began directing an episode of 'Private Practice' for ABC.

He said he remains "excited and anticipating the upcoming production of 'Fences.'"

The 13-week engagement of 'Fences' will begin previews at Broadway's Cort Theatre April 14.
