Actor turned director Robert Townsend is set to document the art and history behind black comedy with his forthcoming Showtime original film, 'Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy.'

The original Codeblack Entertainment executive produced docu-flick, features the likes of Chris Rock, Steve Harvey, Bill Cosby, Katt Williams, and Keenan Ivory Wayans among others discussing the progression of black comedy through various eras.
Townsend decided to document the sub-genre's most pivotal moments in history including the success of television shows such as 'The Jeffersons,' and 'Good Times,' in addition to the rise of Dave Chappelle's critically acclaimed short-lived Comedy Central network show.

"'Why We Laugh' is a major historical contribution to American culture," said Codeblack executive vice-president Quincy Newell. "This film is a tribute to the way one courageous person with a microphone can change history."
'Why We Laugh: Black Comedians on Black Comedy' premieres Feb. 4 at 8 pm on Showtime.
