Though most critics – hands down – praised Mo'Nique's stunning acting performance as a loathsome welfare queen in 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire,' many gossip columnists and pop culture pundits ostracized her for not doing what other Academy Award nominees have done – to promote their films.
Well, the rotund funny-woman seemed to have gotten that last laugh during the 82nd Annual Academy Awards on March 7; she actually won the prize for best supporting actress.
Accepting the award during live internationally-televised broadcast, the brazen Baltimore native stated: "I would like to thank the Academy for showing that it can be about the performance and not the politics."
"To my amazing husband, Sidney [Hicks] -- thank you for showing me that sometimes you have to forego doing what's popular, in order to do what's right," she added to the chagrin of her naysayers and detractors.
Mo'Nique's big win, while momentous to many, caused a stir on social media circles such as Facebook and Twitter, with many of the websites' "followers" lampooning her – some audaciously going as far that she will never be recognized again for such an honor.
Meanwhile, her fellow comedian and friend Sheryl Underwood showered her with praise for her win.
"Here is a person, who went through adversity in her childhood and in her personal life, that we have seen evolve to become comfortable enough in her own skin to perform stand-up comedy, star in her own sitcom and host reality shows, the BET Awards and her own BET talk show."
"The way she has channeled traumatic experiences into an Academy Award winning performance let's us all know that with belief in yourself and a higher power you can accomplish great things ... [I am] confident that Mo'Nique will go on to produce, direct and star in other award winning vehicles, and I must say she looked beautiful in her royal blue gown, accented with a white flower in her hair."
Mo'Nique is only the fifth black woman to win an Academy Award: Hattie McDaniel, Halle Berry, Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson shared the honors before her.
Backstage at the Oscars, the recent NAACP Image Award winning BET late night talk show hostess deadpanned, "I am a stand up comedian who won an Oscar! Ha, baby, I tickle me!""You know, this role was so not about my acting career," she said of the collard greens and pig-feet-eating, child molester Mary Jones. "This role has shaped my life and allowed me not to judge and to love unconditionally. If that goes into my career, great, but if it doesn't and I'm just the dynamic person that I strive to be every day, then I've won, baby!"
The 42-year-old actress, who previously turned in dramatic performances in the films 'Domino' and 'Shadowboxer,' reiterated what she said onstage: "Everything I wanted to say, and everything I needed to say, I said ... I'm very proud to be part of an academy that says we will not play that game. We will judge her on her performance, not how many dinners she attended."
Just to think, there have been so many actors (even black ones who are considered the best in the business) who played by the politics and did what everyone else told them to do. Yet, they still have challenges getting recognized in Hollywood.
Furthermore, some movie projects from acclaimed Academy Award winners -- who shall remain nameless -- go straight-to-DVD.
So go figure.

@Schrier,
My ancestors did NOT profit from slavery, nor did they ever have the political or capital power in this country!
According to your statistics, 99% of whites in this country had NOTHING to do with SLAVERY, are you on some illegal substance???
So I guess that those 99% of whites who had NOTHING to do with SLAVERY, was so APPAULED by SLAVERY, that they were out in full force OPOSING SLAVERY and the other half of your 99%, was so bored that they decided to start a CIVIL war to BAN SLAVERY, yeah right!!!! Remind me again as to the stance on slavery from each side, you know the UNION SOLDIERS versus the CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS!
I guess John Wilkes Boothe, who murdered Abraham Lincoln, was just a part of that 1%, yeah right!
Schrier, that's Jewish isn't??? You have the audacity to be prejudiced? Perhaps 99% of the Germans had NOTHING to do with the Holocaust either!
Wether you liked the movie or not is of no importance or significance, neither is your presence here!! Contrary to popular belief, you all are NOT that IMPORTANT, so it would do you a world of good, to find some other's to focus your attention on!!!! We do not sit around, focused or obssessed on what you all think of us!!!
Last but not least, on the day that you are MAN enough to stop hiding behind your computers, like you did with your sheets and hoods back in the day,
and speak FREELY and OPENLY to the people that you hate so much, will be the day that I or any of us will respect you, until then your CREDIBILITY is shot!!!!
Let me know when you decide to MAN up!!!!!!!!!

A lot of the critics of this movie want to live in a chocolate-covered fairytale and that's why it needed to be made. This is not a portrayal of "the BLACK family" or "the BLACK woman".
This represents a specific type of dysfunctional family which, unfortunately, exists in the REAL world.Abuse, poverty, mental illness and suffering are not restricted by race or class. This told a story for thousands like Precious and Mary who have no voice and go unnoticed in this world. This movie empowered some of us to release it-whatever "it" was that could not be thought and could not be said because it was too ugly.Ultimately,it's about survival and really knowing that life is precious and good and beautiful.
So I applaud Monique and congratulate her. I applaud Lee Daniels and the producers and the cast of this landmark film.

Mo'Nique performance could not be ignored. Many actress have faded into obscurity after an Oscar win so...who cares if MoNique becomes an A list actor or not. Whoopi has done great all of these years (Yes, the FIRST black female stand-up comedian to win an Oscar, Mo'Nique forgot that the other night LOL)Mo'Nique will do well with the Oscar in her back pocket but I am positive that she just considers it icing on the cake of her career.

White people control Hollywood and the movie theaters that show the movies, White people control weather the rap videos and music make the air ways,White people control 90% of the radio stations and commercials that are advertised on them.White people are not going to support a Black movie dealing with positivity and true Black romance and love. We have abnd have had a great many of Black movies worthy of an acadamy award. Carmen Jones, Cabin In The Sky,Stormy Weather, Hallaluyah, Porgy and Bess,To serve With Love, The Color Purple,Boys In Da Hood, Malcom X, Harlem Nights, Coming To America, Jungle Fever,Shaka Zulu,Pinky, the original Imitation Of Life . All of Denzell Washington movies and all of Westly Snipes movies. Some of Will Smith movies. Eartha Kitt, Lena Horn, Diana Ross, Richard Pryor,Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee,All of Sidney Poitie movies, Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Josephine Baker, Tupac , and Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice,Billie Dee Williams, Diana Ross and a many many more Black actors and actresses and movies should have been nominated, But Whites control the buisness and they control what they want the world to see.We need our own award to honor good quality movies weather Black or White. We have proven we can produce and act, now lets let Hollywood know that there is another more meaningful award in town with merrit. A gold and diamond plated award called the Hattie Award, named and after Hattie McDanial. This award will be a treasure second to none . Tyler Perry , Oprah and the other great black producers should bond together like Hollywood and get into the Theater ,Video ,Hip Hop and daytime TV. We can clean up the movies and show Black people in a possitive way, and we still have to be honest and show reality movies as it is without being in denial or being afraid of criticizem. Critics will follow all movies no mater what.Black fashion and hair designers the doors will be open for you to provied the fashion statement .The doors will be open to Black and other races in the various video ,and production related buisnesses. The country need jobs and this is a way to jump start some starving artist. Black economic strength through movie and voideo production. This buisness has produced the most up and coming millionairs in history. Jay Z, Bionce, Master P ,50 cent,Will and Jada Smith,Chriss tucker and Chris Roc, Ludacris, Shaq, Mary Joe Bly,just to name a few. We talk a good game now is time to stop name calling about the movies our actors and actresses have to play in, and create parts that we can identify with.

Like it or not, this happens all the time. There is not one black experience. Precious is true for alot of households, black, white, asian and hispanic. Good Times was true for some blacks. So was the Cosby Show and Family Matters. The problem is we have a lot of people who want to define blackness for everybody. Statistics say one in four women have been molested by the age of 18. They say one in ten men have been molested by age 18. Alot of those victims are black folks like Precious. It is all history. I am just sick and tired of busybodies who say differently. John Lucas is history. A.G. Gaston is history. Nicky Barnes is history. John H Johnson is history.
