Through her critically-heralded music, three-time Grammy Award winning neo-soul singer Jill Scott has always had a genuine connection to her millions of fans. Even with her acting roles – which includes an Emmy Award caliber TV series, a period drama and a Tyler Perry hit movie project – viewers always know they can count on the Philadelphia to keep it really real.

Recently, Scott – a divorcee and single mother – started wearing a new hat; as a relationship columnist for Essence magazine.

In the April edition of the best-selling black women's monthly, the 'Hate On Me' singer tackles interracial love with a provocative entry titled 'The Wince.'

"In our past, if a black man even looked at a white woman, he would have been lynched," Scott wrote in the 'I'm Just Sayin'' column. Her thought-provoking entry has engaged a heated dialogue on the Time Inc.-owned magazine's website.

Black Voices caught up to Scott to ask her about the article -- while she was in New York City making the rounds promoting her new movie, 'Why Did I Get Married Too?' Here's a sneak peek of what Scott said prompted her to take on the hot topic.
