Hip-hop may have been founded in New York, but there's no discounting the contributions of the Dirty South.
On June 7, 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors' will pay homage to some of the biggest names in rap music from below the Mason Dixon line.
Grammy Award-winning producer and So So Def Records founder Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder James "J Prince" Smith, Luther "Luke" Campbell and 2Live Crew, No Limit Records Founder Master P, and Atlanta-based production company Organized Noize are all being recognized through performances in collaboration with some of today's biggest stars.
This marks the first time in the awards show's history that so many honorees are artists and founders of independent record labels. In 2009, Def Jam Records became the first label to be lauded for its contributions to hip-hop.
Last year's telecast was also the highest-rated 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors.' Tracy Morgan hosted the special, which featured performances from Mary J. Blige, Rick Ross, Kid Rock, Ludacris, Scarface, Fabolous, Foxy Brown and KRS-One.
'VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South' will be filmed at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on June 3 and air on June 7 at 9 p.m. ET.

I agree with you....I grew up with Hip-Hop....and to think they are not giving props to EMPD, or Gangstar, or any other rapper that came out before these other hip hop artist came out confuses me because if it wasn't for them, there wouldn't be HIP-HOP!!! RECONIZE!!!!

I agree with Teri and What the...? They still haven't even honored Kurtis Blow. I originally thought that the premise of the show was going to be in some sort of chronological order at least honoring the foundation first, but I guess not. I'll pass this year again.

Music was not created for this. Too much politics and there's no need for that. Hip Hop has been sold to the highest bidder. I now understand why "Prince" said that music has no real value anymore. I recalled music being any and everybody's canvas to create or express themselves. It's not that way anymore. Music has become like a high priced whore. It's strictly about business and control not about freedom of expression, individuality or enlightment. It's twisted and controlled by those of greed and self indulgence. The beautiful thing about music is that one day it will break free again and those around it will learn to be humble again realizing the real purpose of music.
