Hip-hop may have been founded in New York, but there's no discounting the contributions of the Dirty South.

On June 7, 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors' will pay homage to some of the biggest names in rap music from below the Mason Dixon line.

Grammy Award-winning producer and So So Def Records founder Jermaine Dupri, Rap-A-Lot Records founder James "J Prince" Smith, Luther "Luke" Campbell and 2Live Crew, No Limit Records Founder Master P, and Atlanta-based production company Organized Noize are all being recognized through performances in collaboration with some of today's biggest stars.

This marks the first time in the awards show's history that so many honorees are artists and founders of independent record labels. In 2009, Def Jam Records became the first label to be lauded for its contributions to hip-hop.

Last year's telecast was also the highest-rated 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors.' Tracy Morgan hosted the special, which featured performances from Mary J. Blige, Rick Ross, Kid Rock, Ludacris, Scarface, Fabolous, Foxy Brown and KRS-One.

'VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South' will be filmed at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on June 3 and air on June 7 at 9 p.m. ET.
