Apollo Theater Debuts Walk of Fame on 125th Street

As previously reported by BV Newswire, this year's annual Apollo Theatre Spring Benefit Concert and Awards Ceremony will induct the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, into the theater's Apollo Legends Hall of Fame.

In addition to the prestigious June 14 gala, the world-famous theater has also unveiled its first installment of plaques to be displayed outside the venues new Walk of Fame.

"The Walk of Fame is our way of paying tribute to the Apollo Legends who have forever altered the American entertainment landscape," said Apollo Theater chief Jonelle Procope.

"The Apollo Theater is one of Harlem's, New York City's, and America's most iconic and enduring cultural institutions and is one of New York's most visited tourist destinations in the world's most famous neighborhood. We're proud to unveil this new and unique New York City landmark, which adds one more reason why the Apollo is a destination for music lovers around the world."

The commemorative sidewalk, located under the Apollo's marquee, will honor an array of legendary entertainers.

Among the firsts to be cemented into history will be Quincy Jones, Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Little Richard and Ella Fitzgerald.

"For me to have a plaque honoring me in front of the Apollo Theater is one of the proudest achievements in my life," said Motown legend Robinson. "I started out at the Apollo, and it will always be a home to me. Even if they tear all of 125th street down, leave the Apollo standing. It is that important to me."

Robinson wasn't the only legend who felt overjoyed by the honor, LaBelle also expressed her gratitude.

"My career began at the Apollo, so I'm humbled to be able to be a part of its rich and continued legacy," she stated. "And I'm grateful to be in the company of legendary entertainers such as Smokey Robinson, James Brown and so many more and that the Apollo is able to recognize us in such an amazing way."

Jamie Foxx will host this year's gala.
