Wyclef Jean Gives Haitian Girls a Shopping Spree

As of late, Wyclef Jean has kept a low profile with respect to the work he's been doing behind-the-scenes with his Yele Haiti charity.

The former Fugees frontman was one of the first to organize and fundraise for the impoverished region, quickly raising over one million dollars in a matter of days. But, he hasn't slowed down with his efforts yet.

On Tuesday (May 18) the Grammy Award-winning singer/rapper took three Haitian girls, Chantal Mori, Farah Maurice and Margarette Pierre on $1,000 shopping sprees at Kmart.
The young ladies, who lost limbs in the devastating Haitian earthquake this past January, were in town to be fitted for prosthetic limbs.

The New York 34th Street K-Mart teamed with Yele Haiti and Jean to provide the three girls with necessities like shoes and clothing, as well as fun items, like electronics and makeup.

The 'Gone 'Til November' singer told the New York Daily News that he just wanted to let the girls know that they are normal.

"Today they're not thinking, 'I don't have a leg.' They're just being kids and they're happy," Jean said.

"When you come from a country where you make $1 a day, giving them $1,000 is like giving them $10,000."

The youngest girl, Farah Maurice, lost a knee in the earthquake and Margarette Pierre and Chantal Mori each lost an arm.

Yéle Haiti worked with the Global Medical Relief Fund (GMRF) to provide eight round-trip tickets from their partner Delta Airlines-which included tickets for GMRF staff and the patients' relatives-between Port-au-Prince and the GMRF's headquarters in Staten Island, N.Y.

The group then traveled to Philadelphia, where the three girls will be treated at Shriners Hospitals for Children, which will be providing the care for free.
