Pee-wee Herman, the popular children's television character who inspired a hip-hop dance and anthem during the 1980s, is now taking his fun-filled comedy to Broadway when a new stage play, 'The Pee-wee Herman Show,' kicks off this fall.

The show's creator, Paul Reubens, 57, will star in the new production, which is based on his popular children's television show, 'Pee-wee's Playhouse.' He also participated in co-writing the play.

In 2006, the Cartoon Network re-aired the series, and 1.5 million viewers watched every night.

The new show will have a special six-week engagement starting on Oct. 26 at New York's Stephen Sondheim Theatre.'Pee-wee's Playhouse' has launched the careers of several of today's popular actors.

Before Emmy Award-winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson made her star turn as Lt. Anita Van Buren on the long-running drama 'Law and Order,' she made her television debut as Reba the Mail Lady on 'Playhouse.' Also, Academy Award nominee Laurence Fishburne had a recurring role on the cult classic CBS show. For several seasons, he played Cowboy Curtis. Even Oscar-nominated director John Singleton had a bit role on the live-action series as a security guard.

The success of the series blossomed into a cottage industry, which included the release of a talking doll.

A big-picture adaptation of the series, 'Pee-wee's Big Adventure,' which was directed by Tim Burton, surfaced in the summer of 1985 via Warner Bros. Pictures. On the heels of the film's success, rapper Joe Ski Love released the track and music video, ' Pee-wee's Dance.' Three years later, Paramount Pictures released its follow-up 'Big Top Pee-wee.'

'The Pee-wee Herman Show' heads to the Great White Way having completed a sold-out, critically acclaimed run in Los Angeles. The 90-minute performance follows a day in the life of the bow-tied hero with some of the TV show's original cast of characters, including Miss Yvonne, Cowboy Curtis, Pterri the Pterodactyl, Jambi the Genie and Chairry.

Scott Sanders
, the show's producer, described it as "a Broadway musical-caliber production with multimedia effects." The former Radio City Music Hall executive (pictured right, with Reubens) is the visionary behind bringing Oprah Winfrey and 'The Color Purple' to Broadway in 2005.

The complete cast of 'The Pee-wee Herman Show' will be announced in the coming weeks.
