2010 Tony Awards: Blacks Do Well on Great White Way

It was a good night for blacks on Broadway, with Bill T. Jones of 'Fela!,' Denzel Washington and Viola Davis among the winners at the 64th annual Tony Awards in New York City.

'Memphis,' a show about music and race during the 1950s, won for best musical, best book of a musical, best orchestrations and best score.

With 11 nominations, and producers Jay-Z, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith in attendance, the musical about Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti won three awards, including one for Jones' masterful choreography.

After striking out with critics in 2005 when he did 'Julius Caesar,' Washington -- a two-time Oscar winner -- erased those memories when he won for best performance by a leading actor in the revival of August Wilson's 'Fences.'

His win marked the first time since James Earl Jones in 1987 that an African American took home the prize for best actor, which, ironically, Jones won for the same role in the original 'Fences.'

Washington's co-star, the Oscar-nominated actress Viola Davis ('Doubt'), won for best performance by a leading actress for her role as a long-suffering wife. It was the second award for Davis, who won in 2002 for her role in Wilson's 'King Hedley II.'

"I was born into circumstances where I couldn't see it with my eyes, I couldn't touch it with my hands and so I had to believe it in my heart," said Davis.

It's the first time in Tony history that black performers won for best actor and best actress during the same theater season.

Wins by Washington and Davis were among many from the Hollywood star power set: Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones ('Chicago') won for best actress in a musical for 'A Little Night Music,' and Scarlett Johansson took home a win for best featured actress in a play for her role in the revival of Arthur Miller's 'View From the Bridge.'
