"People are being naïve when they say, 'Oh, it's great that she has this attitude.' This girl is in trouble and people want to deny that. We have an epidemic of obesity in the black community, especially among black women."
-- Radio personality/author Robin Quivers weighing in on Academy Award nominee Gabourey Sidibe's obesity. (Ebony)

Why don't they ask this young lady how she feels about her body? If she is that uncomfortable with her weight... she will handle it. People always seem to know what's best for everyone else, except themselves. I think Robyn is waaaay to old to be someone's "yes woman" but she is, and it makes her happy... I guess. If you look at her and Stern, they could use A LOT of work, so quit playin! They discrace others to make themselves look (HA!) better. This sets Gabby apart from a lot of acctresses, and that's why she got that part. I guess if it were someone different saying this, I probably wouldn't have commented. But since it was her, I had to add my two cents.

Who's to say Gabby cannot be a successful actress b/c she is overweight? There was a time when ppl thought an overweight woman, period, could not be successful. Look at Roseanne Barr and Rosie Odonnel. There was a time when ppl thought dark skin women who wore little or no makeup and dreads could not be successful in Hollywood. Look at Whoopi Goldberg. Let the future decide who will be successful. Don't let anyone else write u out b4 u get started. Gabby...best wishes. Peace.

I have to cosign on some of these comments. Gabby has a mirror just like the rest of us. She is well aware of how much she weighs and what size she wears. What she does about it is up to her. She would have to be living on another planet not to have hear the obesity statistics. It is up to her to make any changes SHE deems necessary. In the meantime we should love her as is - for the person she is and not spend time analyzing her girth. We should celebrate her talent and ambition where she is now. Just because she's big doesn't mean she doesn't deserve love, success, a career and to enjoy her life where she is now. Why lose the moment? The way some people act, it's like they feel the world has the right to be cruel to anyone who doesn't look like they feel they should look. Get over it. Work on you and let Gabby work on Gabby.

My jaw drop when I saw Robin has a mind of her own but I still expected Howard to jump out of the bushes. Amazing people care about your health but not your feelings. Robin you lost cred a long time ago its way too late to voice anything you might have to say. BTW I remember when your ass was fat.

Robin isn't coming from a place of caring or true interest in Gabby. She never has anything positive to say about women and it's obvious she doesn't love or think much of herself- she continues to stay with that mysogynist Howard Stern - like an abused wife. Gabby knows she's overweight. She didn't just wake up yesterday. While Robin may have a point- her words fall on deaf ears because they come from a place of meanspiritness as an extension of her boss.

while I loathe the howard stern show and robin even more, she has struck a cord her. namely, the outrageous narrative among black women in the industry that it is somehow ok to be fat, bloated and hideous. there is nothing remotely sexy, affectionate, healthy or independent in being fat and unhealthy. gaborey isn't the only culprit, a certain loud mouth comedienne mo'nique is the prime example.
mo'nique is not sexy, she isn't beautiful and her outrageous commentary that it is somehow ok to be the size of a small car is a terrible message to send to young black girls. at least queen latifah is attempting to do something about her weight.

I do not agree with Robin's comment, because I don't think that people are being nieve of Gabby's weight. People are simply saying that here is a young women who in spite of her weight still has the confidence and self esteem to not let that bring her down. I am sure that she knows that her weight is not healthy and in her own time will address that. It is certainly no different than someone who is gay and participating in an act that they know can lead to aids. Society doesn't seem to think of them as being nieve. This is the problem with the acceptance of bad behaviors, you can't pick and choose which ones society will embrace. You may pick which one you want to embrace but society will allow them all!

I agree with Robin. She really needs to take a look at her health. As she gets older, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery/heart disease, or congestive heart failure may occur. Too many of my black brothers and sisters are dying way before their time simply by what they put in their mouths. About 8 months ago, I was diagnosed with hypertension due to my weight (5'11 295 lbs)despite having a muscular build and being an athlete. Since December, I have dropped from 295 to now 255. I am only taking one blood pressure med now and will soon be off of it as I continue to progress. My secret: Eliminating sweets, starcy foods, sodas, cookies, etc. The carbs I eat are mostly green veggies (brocoli is my favorite), beans, whole wheat bread, boiled eggs, protein shake, etc. I would say more, but you get the ideal. I do it naturally. I don't take any pills to burn fat or any other supplements. I excercise 3 consecutive days and take two days off to recover. My excercise consist of 45 - 60 minutes of cardio (even walking if you can't run) and resistance training. Never do legs and upper body excercise at the same time. Oh by the way, drink plenty of water. You need about a galon to a galon and a half per day to push all of the access protein out of your kidneys. I'm 45, black, never had any operations, all of my organs are functioning properly. Anyone can do this - even Gabby. May God bless you all with good health. Peace!!

Yeah Robin I agree she is too heavy but thats for her to handle and not you. The only reason your ass didnt get fat over the years cause you know Howard would have laughed your ass right off his show you know it and so does everyone else. You just keep being the kiss ass on that show and keep ridin his coat tails. One thing Gabby got where she is on her own not kissing some sorry nasty old white mans ass like you did. How far would you be with out Howard people dont even know who the hell you are if Howard isnt mentioned.

Those of you who are coming down on Robin and supporting Gabby are likely overweight, obese, have low self-esteem of something.
Robin is not Gabby's problem and she is certainly not the one profiting on her obesity. First of all, you guys are too blind to see what is really happening with this girl. First one's to exploit her were the producers and the director of the mo vine that she played in. It wasn't difficult for her to play the role of a sullen, obese, young black girl because that's who she is and the hateful looks and swollen cheeks, which she didn't have to work on to get there, was in no way worthy of an academy award nomination. She got all that attention because it was white America's way of mocking Black women and taking the opportunity to emphasize and exploit the image of how they have always viewed us as Black women! Had a white Director or a white person wrote that script and cast Gabby Black folk would be up in arms! But, like dog and pony show, Black folk put her out there and white folk ate it up......but just long enough to completely humiliate and mock Black women, and Black people in general.
And not that it's over, Gabby can go on being herself, of which folk and the media complain that she is rude and sullen....but then, she's just being herself. Few of us could ever just walk up and get all those awards for just being ourselves, no acting involved. Just look at her in Sat. Night Live. She couldn't even remember her lines, and kept screwing up. She could not act a all and that was clear.
So, please, let's stop defending this big, gigantic, overweigh, and unattractive...no...UGLY young woman. Yes, I said it. The girl is downright ugly and you all know it. It wouldn't matter if she were light, dark, blue or green, she has very ugly features as it is now. That may change when and if she loses some weight and her face returns to a normal face rather than a deformed looking balloon that appears to be ready to pop!
I have a 16 year old who is very pretty and dark. She is about 15 lbs overweight and we are struggling to encourage her to eat right, exercise and get her weight under control. It's a family effort and we all work together, exercise with her etc. We were doing well until Gabby came along and suddenly my daughter's excuse would be, weight doesn't matter. Look at Gabourey Sidibe's weight and she's a star. If it didn't hold her back, it won't hold me back.
We as African American's are having enough problems now working on the obesity issue with our kids. This girl is setting our efforts back and someone needs to get her into a serious weight loss regime, stable her mouth, her stomach or something! She is a total embarrassment to me and to all Black women and does not represent who we are.
I am as offended by her as I am 1889 creation of Aunt Jemima!
Again, Robin isn't the problem. I've never liked Robin, but I have a new respect for her now for being honest enough to stand up and get real with this situation. Right on Robin!!!!!!
To Gabby...take a break, and do something about your health and your weight. You are not the proper role model or example for young women and you are an embarrassment to many!
