The Queen has spoken, and she wants the biggest names in black Hollywood to star in her highly anticipated biopic.
Aretha Franklin has been quietly meeting with today's leading black actors and actresses, including Denzel Washington and Terence Howard, for roles in the film based on her New York Times best-selling autobiography, 'Aretha: From These Roots," and she says she's in the midst of finalizing negotiations.
Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry is Aretha's top pick to play her younger self. Berry previously won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for portraying famed actress Dorothy Dandridge in the made-for-television movie 'Introducing Dorothy Dandridge,'
Denzel Washington, whom the Detroit native visited during his Tony Award-winning run on Broadway in August Wilson's 'Fences,' told Franklin he's open to playing the role of Franklin's father, Rev. C.L. Franklin. 'Law and Order: Los Angeles' star and Oscar-nominated Terrence Howard agreed to portray her dear friend and former Miracles front man, Smokey Robinson. Nia Long is being asked to play the Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree's sister, Erma Franklin, and she wants heartthrob Blair Underwood on board to play her brother and longtime manager, Cecil Franklin.
It is fitting that Franklin would seek out the best in gospel music to take on the roles of members of the world-renowned gospel group, the Ward Singers. Karen Clark Sheard and LaShun Pace are being asked to portray the women who most influenced Franklin's career.

For some reason Re-Re keeps looking over Jennifer Hudson. I think she is intimidated by this girl's voice, performance, aura and youth. Did you see JHud tear up (in a good way) "Think" and I believe "Dr. Feelgood" (or a similar tune) on the UNCF Evening with the Stars telethon a couple of years ago?
It's just like if Patti LaBelle didn't want Fantasia to play her in her movie. Fantasia got that moxie, and everybody knows it and Pattie enjoys not envys Fantasia's performances. Aretha needs more believability in her casting. Jill Scott would even be ok. But Halle Berry? Lena Horne didn't even want Halle or Vanna Williams portraying her, which is more credible than Aretha's choice.
When she was younger, Aretha did have that brickhouse figure with the voice and all but still, I can't see Halle in any stage and with no amount of costume or makeup doing justice to Aretha. And I agree, Halle was terrific as Dorothy Dandridge.

@HoneyKone,
DITTO :)
I also thought about Jennifer Hudson portraying a young Aretha, but for some reason I don't think Jennifer is even on Aretha’s radar. I believe Aretha is going to use this movie as a spring board for a comeback, therefore Aretha isn't going to let a singer/actor upstage her comeback attempt.
Of course Aretha Franklin is a legend, and Jennifer Hudson is nowhere near her caliber but Jennifer is a singer who sung and acted so well
that she won an Oscar for her performance ( it probably took Beyonce awhile to get over that).
Personally, I’m going to go see the movie just because Aretha put her stamp on it, but most legendary singers takes their diva status
serious. Legends don't too much like sharing the spotlight with other singers.
Aretha wants an actor to portray her because when the movie does well, she wants fans to buy her music...not the music of the singer/actor
who portrayed her. The bio will use Aretha’s vocals just like What Love Got To Do With It? used Tina’s vocals, which is a great idea…I just hope Aretha don’t show up singing towards the end of
the movie ( like Tina did in WLGTDWI?).
Angela Bassett started the movie and she should’ve finished it. Angela‘s performance in that movie was awesome :)But way Tina came on stage towards the end of that movie was so diva-ish :(
If Aretha is serious, Jill Scott is another singer/actor that would do justice to her bio ;)
@Towa,
Cool picks ;) Ticha Arnold has a very strong voice! But just like Tina, Aretha will be supplying the vocals.
@Prettylegadiva,
Your comment sounds about right because Aretha's diva mentality is controling her choices.

"But way Tina came on stage towards the end of that movie was so diva-ish"
FYI: That clip of Tina Turner at the end of "What's Love Got To Do With It" was taken from a concert she did years ago on her "Private Dancer" Tour back in the mid 80's, before the movie of her was even made!
Also, the producer (not Tina, she didn't even want to see the movie) wanted that clip of her at the end of the movie just to pay respect to her. So Tina did not just come on stage in a "diva-ish" moment as you put it. Besides if you're doing a bio pic of a legend, it is rightfully so you show the "real" thing just out of respect.
Peace.

MY PERRSONAL OPINION IS A ACTOR/ACTRESS PORTRAIL SHOULD SOME HOW CLOSELY FIT THE ACTUALLY PERSON THEY ARE PORTRAYING. HALLE BERRY DOES NOT IN ANY WAY FIT ANYTHING HAVING TO DO WITH ARETHA FRANKLIN. SELF IMAGE SHOULD NOT BE THE MOTIVATOR IN THE ASPECT OF CASTING. BUT THE ATTEMPT TO MAKE THE FILM BIOGRAPHY AS TRUE TO LIFE AS POSSIBLE.

Ok, I love all those stars she chose, except Halle. I think J-Hud would have been a better choice as a young Aretha, especially now that J-Hud has lost all that weight and she can saaaang.
I don't know the business part of it, but out of all those people she chose, not nare one of them sing.
What? I mean, don't you have to be able to sing in a Ree-Ree movie biopic????......I don't get it. I know they can get someone to do the singing or maybe Ree-Ree will sing over Halle's lipsyncing, but J-Hud would have just been a better choice.
Denzel is a perfect choice to play her father, Rev. Franklin. I like that choice. Nia, Terrence, and Blair are perfect too.
Even if she didn't want J-Hud, she could have chosen someone else......like ummmm...i can't think of anyone else....but Halle????...come on now, I know she's the Queen and always will be, but ummm...somebody need to pull her coat.

Aretha's between a rock & a hard place. If she goes with quality actors, good chance of a blockbuster hit but she'd have to give up more %$$$. If she goes with casting people who resemble their characters and who can pull it off believably well...she can pocket more and those actors will get on the map. That's why I say Tichia Arnold & Tisha Campbell (they don't have to sing..and we know then can act.) Also John Legend as Smokey and Musiq Soulchild as Aretha's father..and Larenz Tate as Aretha's brother. I think with a good script and good director....they could pull it off and everybody walk away with something.

NOPE, THE BEST THING TO DO WOULD BE NATION WIDE TALENT SEARCH. ALL NEW, UNKNOWN ACTORS, MAKE SURE THE YOUNG LADY THAT GETS THE LEAD CAN SING. RADIO ONE CAN EVEN MAKE A REALITY SHOW OUT OF IT. WIN WIN FOR EVERYONE

I wonder if Aretha's going to have Dennis Edwards character in there somewhere. Ya know they had a serious relationship going on for a while. He was going back & forth between Aretha and Ruth (Pointer Sister). Aretha wrote "Daydreaming" about him. He married crazy-azz Ruth I guess because she and her sisters were cokin' up and crazy to be around. I remember Soul Train dedicated a segment to Aretha and a couple of the songs she sang, you could see and feel her emotion. She was hurtin'.
