Though several black film directors look to him as a mentor in Hollywood, Spike Lee hasn't been too pleased with Tinsletown's most successful black filmmaker of the day, Tyler Perry.
Lee has been very vocal about his frustration with the images of black America shown in some of Perry's films, saying, "We shouldn't think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make...but at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and harkens back to 'Amos n' Andy.'"
In response to the criticism, Perry told a '60 Minutes' reporter that Lee's comments "pissed him off" and were "insulting" because he creates all of his characters as "bait to get people talking about God, love, family and faith."
Despite them appearing to be polar opposites, both filmmaking icons have more than just a few things in common.
BlackVoices.com explores how both acclaimed directors have proved themselves to be viable commodities – helping to break the careers of new talent, while transforming and resurrecting the careers of other legendary actors -- all the while becoming their own men and unapologetically making the types of films they are passionate about.
But there's more.
Check out a tale of the titans.

This is why were we remain divided as a race, if Spike Lee had an issue with Tyler Perry it should have been dealt with behind close doors. Who named Spike Lee God, what is he doing for the African -American community other than attending sports events. He is just asinine.

Black people aren't anymore DIVIDED than any other group---if we were, your black a$$ would be picking cotton somewhere or cleaning some white folk's house for peanuts.
You are no BLACK revolutionary--you and other black folks need to quit trying to "speak" like you're back in the 60s during the Civil Rights Movement, lecturing to the race. It's so tired & old.
Just because black folks have a "difference of opinion" among themseles, doesn't make them DIVIDED. It makes US diverse & complex like any other culture.

Perry belittles the black person by making fun of speech patterns, arrest records, and moralities

spike's mad because this guy took a page from his book. but, inserted women as his central figures. and we all know women will attend the movies at a higher rate than men. therefore, perry's going to have a more focused fan base. also, he's doing more for blacks because he hires more of them than lee did. lee doesn't make good black movies anymore. perry has and he's including alot of storylines that are universal to women. i work around women, in a hospital, and all nationalities of women are priming to see for colored girls only. when spike was around mostly blacks were watching his movies.

altho i watch/buy his movies i began to pull away from tyler perry after watching the scene in 'house of payne' where calvin and miranda (go rudy) were at the dr's office and ran into his ex. the dr, who kept calling him tyrone and her moesha stood up to exclaim YOU ARE THE BABY'S FATHER YOU GET TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT. or something like that and i thought...that's not funny. if he were a white man everyone would be up in arms about something like that.
and why does everyone say madea is about GOD? i must miss those episodes because i only catch her joking about the whole christianity thing.

I appreciate Spike and Tyler's contribution to creating art. However, Spike must recognize that his view are differnt from Tyler. It this a crime?!!
My wish is for Spike to look beyond his extremist views.

Yes, Spike should have dealt with the matter privately. It makes him look like he is jealous of Tyler Perry.
