Though several black film directors look to him as a mentor in Hollywood, Spike Lee hasn't been too pleased with Tinsletown's most successful black filmmaker of the day, Tyler Perry.
Lee has been very vocal about his frustration with the images of black America shown in some of Perry's films, saying, "We shouldn't think that Tyler Perry is going to make the same film that I am going to make...but at the same time, for me, the imaging is troubling and harkens back to 'Amos n' Andy.'"
In response to the criticism, Perry told a '60 Minutes' reporter that Lee's comments "pissed him off" and were "insulting" because he creates all of his characters as "bait to get people talking about God, love, family and faith."
Despite them appearing to be polar opposites, both filmmaking icons have more than just a few things in common.
BlackVoices.com explores how both acclaimed directors have proved themselves to be viable commodities – helping to break the careers of new talent, while transforming and resurrecting the careers of other legendary actors -- all the while becoming their own men and unapologetically making the types of films they are passionate about.
But there's more.
Check out a tale of the titans.

I LIKE BOTH TYLER PERRY'S AND SPIKE LEE'S WORK. WHAT GETS ME IS HOW CAN SPIKE LEE BE MAD OR UPSET WITH WHAT TYLER IS DOING. I REMEMBER SPIKE LEE MOVIES SUCH AS DO THE RIGHT THING AND SHE GOTTA HAVE IT, MO BETTER BLUES AND THE LIST GOES ON. WHERE HIS MOVIES ARE PRETTY MUCH SAYING THAT THE WOMEN LOVE TO SLEEP AROUND AND THE MEN CHEAT ON THEIR WOMEN THE MEN ARE WALKING CARRYING BOOM BOXES AND SITTING ON THE STAIRS OF THEIR APARTMENTS AND JUST KICKING THE WILLIE BO BO ALL DAY NOT WORKING. ATLEAST TYLER PERRY MOVIES ARE SHOWING BLACKS WITH VERY GOOD JOBS, TAKING CARE OF THEIR RESPONSIBLITY AND HAVING SOME DIGNITY WHILE DEALING WITH LIFES EVERYDAY PROBLEMS. COULD IT BE THAT SPIKE IS UPSET BECAUSE HE THINKS THAT TYLER PERRY IS STEALING HIS THUNDER. I AM SO SICK OF MY PEOPLE KICKING SALT ON EACH OTHER. IT BAD ENOUGH THAT WHITE HOLLYWOOD DOES IT TO US. ATLEAST SUPPORT EACH OTHER. YOU ARE STRONGER TOGETHER THAN APART.SO QUIT TRYING TO TEAR EACH OTHER DOWN. TYLER KEEP ON DOING WHAT YOU DO AND SPIKE YOU DO YOUR THANG. THE RIGHT THANG. BOTH OF YOU ARE VERY TALENTED BLACK MEN WITH A LOT TO OFFER. I LOVE THE BOTH OF YOU. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

Spike Lee and Tyler Perry you both are excellent and motivative black film makers and stars. The only difference is the style of movies. Mr. Lee some people probably thought Amos and Andy was stereo-typed but the shows were funny as hell to me. We as people need to laugh with us and not at us. One might see sadness, another see humor, it might be positive but yet someone says its negative. But we're looking from the eyes of the beholder. You both are talented men. Learn to embrace and stimulate the minds. Help make us think we do have choices.

I was thinking the same thing...However, before there was Perry there was John Singleton. So, maybe Spike does have some concerns...BUT...Perry is make more money than both of them...

To bad some of us think money is what makes us successful. Tyler Perry's movies have given him monies but Spike Lee's movies are classic's. In years to come I can invision Lee's movies airing on the Turner Classic Movies Channel.

Again Black people can't stick together.Spike Lee is crying and bitching because he jealous that Tyler Perry is the man at the moment.Just like Spike was back in the late 1980's and 90's.As of present Spike productivity of putting out movie's is at a stand still compare to the movie's he use to put out.I guess Spike's pockets are to full with money to spark any creativity like he use to.Black movie fans like to be entertained no matter if it's a serious or a comedy movie as long as they relate to it in some way..Black people related to Spike Lee movies years ago now they relate to tyler Perry movies. Spike Lee should back up Tyler Perry in what he is doing right now or start putting out some movies like he use to.

Nathan... so true, and what pisses me off is that Spike is the first to say that 'we need to stick together'.
There is a playwright name David E. Talbert, he was making plays before Tyler stepped on the scene, when asked if he was a little annoyed that Tyler is getting all of this attention...David say NO! Because now MORE people are coming out to support black playwrights. He is just happy to benefit from Tyler's success.
WAY TO GO DAVID E. TALBERT...make sure we support this brother too, he is very talented.
You may recognize the name as he wrote/directed 'First Sunday'
As for Tyler...Do the dang thang!!

No--this has nothing to do with BLACK people not STICKING together as YOU say. I think Tyler Perry's box office dollars are PROOF of that.
This is the opinion of ONE black movie director. Who told YOU that Spike Lee was speaking for all of US?
Grow up and quit ya STEREOTYPING, GENERALIZING & PATHOLOGIZING. People like YOU act just like bigoted white folks...you try to apply every negative issue or event to EVERY black person when it happens.

So when was the last time Spike made a block-buster film? That being said; there's room for numerous writers, directors, etc. Also; word of caution; we shouldn't believe everything we see on TV, online, or read in print. A lot of situations are magnified to appeal to the masses.
