The '2010 American Music Awards' which took place at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre, was absent any notable shocking moments. Some of the night's big award winners, including Lady Gaga and Eminem, did not attend the award ceremony, and all of the acceptance speeches and performances were free from scandal.
Rihanna opened the night with an acappella version of 'Love the Way You Lie (Part II).' When the set changed, she re-emerged in a black-and-white bra top and a short, fringed island skirt to perform her new single 'What's My Name.'
After shaking her hips to a dancehall breakdown, the beat switched, and Rihanna finished with her dance hit 'Only Girl in the World.' The Barbadian beauty, who just released her fifth album, 'Loud,' also beat out Sade and Alicia Keys for the Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist award. In a light-hearted moment, she smacked Young Money rapper Nicki Minaj on the butt while walking backstage after accepting her award.
Diddy was accompanied by his Dirty Money group and performed the introspective 'Coming Home' as his son Christian Combs smiled along from the audience.
Usher, whose artist Justin Bieber, took home four of the night's big awards, broke out some stellar dance moves to his chart-topper 'DJ Got Us Falling in Love.' Usher, who is currently criss-crossing the country on his OMG tour also won two awards: Favorite Soul/R&B Album for 'Raymond v. Raymond' and Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist.
Ne-Yo also sang a medley of songs from his soon-to-be-released album, 'Libra Scale,' including 'Champagne Life,' 'One in a Million' and 'Beautiful Monster.'
The Black Eyed Peas brought the crowd to its feet with a glow-in-the-dark performance of their song 'This Time (The Dirty Bit),' which samples the 'Dirty Dancing' theme song. The group also sang the track on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' last week.

How in the world did RIhanna beat out A. Keys and Sade for anything related to soul and R&B. Then again, this is the AMA's, so not surprised.

OH plz! Alicia Keys with her fake last name is tired, her star shined already. somebody like Rihanna deserves to win thats a breath of fresh air for a change. then after Rihanna's star shined it'll be another that wins. thats the way it is.
The AMA's isn't what it used to be like it was back in the day when you looked forward to watching it. it's been sucking for years after years... when the white singers are put first to come out and sing. i don't watch it.

@ Tiffany, I don't watch this mess. It has changed drastically. I was thinking the same thing though, how did Rihanna beat out A. Keys but specifically, Sade? Craziness. They all look crazy.

I agree with you. Rihanna, a singer. There aren't many young "Singers" today. In today's entertainment world, shaking your ### is talent. Real singers with voices go unnoticed. It's the industry which is why I do not buy or indulge in the crap that is released today. None of these so-called singers can hold a candle to real singers, (Stepanie Mills, Aretha, Patty LaBelle, Patty Austin, Randy Crawford). When they can rise to the levels of the people mentioned (and that is a very, very small sample) then come talk to me.

This whole music awards thing is so phony and ridiculous, it has become a parody of itself.
Maybe Lady Gaga is way ahead of the game by not even showing up in the first place. Ever visit her "Poker Face" Youtube video site, see how many millions watch, every day, every minute, from all over the planet???
She's one of the most brilliant performance artists to make it into the mainstream . . . she's not stupid or desperate.
Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj (gasp) is referred to as a "musician"? Really???
Hmmmm . . . I just wonder . . .

Rihanna got a standing ovation for what? Then beat out Sade for best R&B. Eminem won best hip hop/rap. The lil white boy that they souled-up was the big winner of the night, and the highlight of the show was New Kids On The Block & Backstreet Boys. WTF!!! The celebration of mediocrity is quite pervasive in American culture; I mean, shoot, we adopted the term "Reality Televison STAR" *smhr*. Regardless, we have more devices to compensate for people's ineptitude to the point that folks don't feel moved to strive for greatness anymore.

Worse live performances ever!! With the exception of a few. I was really disappointed that the bulk of these artists failed the "reality" test. So now we know what happens when your engineer isn't fixing your recording for the public........

I so agree Brutha H! Rhianna even being nominated in Soul/R&B is ridiculous. I like a few of her songs but she doesn't have any "soul" to her at all.

Guess the powers to be realized that Rihanna couldn't beat out "Lady Gaga" in the Best Pop Female category so they stuck her in Soul and R&B to keep her relevant. The voting AMA audience has no clue what Soul/R&B is...just that Rihanna's music is heard more and she is the current "IT" girl. Obviously Rihanna's mere presence outshines her lack of talent cause her performance was a slight edge above karaoke...just shows the continued lack of creditability for these award shows.
