Details of the 72-year-old singer's condition surfaced during a rocky California court case finding her husband, Artis Mills, attempting to control more than $1 million James' estate.
According to the Associated Press, James' Beverly Hills physician, Dr. Elaine James revealed in court documents that the 'At Last' singer is unable to sign her name and needs assistance with feeding, dressing and hygiene.
In February 2008 the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee granted power of attorney to sons Donto and Sametto James, and Donto's wife, Christ.
While Etta's son is asking a third party to control her assets "to avoid present and future family conflict and discrepancies," a court hearing set for today (Jan. 14) in considering Mills' request to transfer James' assets to a joint account so that he can monitor her spending.

I'm just so shock to hear of Etta James condition. I will keep her in my prayers. I feel quite fortunate to have had the opportunity of seeing her perform at BB King Blues Club in NYC. I fell in love with Etta James music in 2000. I've been buying her CDs ever since. I just can't get enough of her music. I'll be asking God to watch over her, God never stops performing miracles. Keep the faith. We love you Etta.

There is none like her, and I for one understand her ranting not being choosen to sing "HER SONG, AT LAST"...This would have been such an honor to and for us allll for it truely was an "AT LAST MOMENT", and no one could ever sing it with the feeling she has, she lived it!!! God bless and keep you Etta and give you peace, and may HIS face shine upon you...and I pray that the family come to an agreement with your needs and concerns as the main focus...Amen~~~

Wow. It hurts me to hear this. To be hit with a double whammy - leukemia and dementia - is heartbreaking. My mother suffered from dementia in her later years and it tore me apart, her no longer being the vibrant and active person she was for years, so I know what the family is dealing with. It just took the life and personality right out of her, and the worst of it was when she didn't even recognize her own family members. God bless Etta and pray for her family's strength because Lord knows they need it.

I was really sad to hear about Etta. I was introduced to Etta's music at age 9. In my house, every Saturday morning, we cleaned to At Last, All I could do was cry. Her album cover on my wall as a teenager reminded me of what real music was all about. Her music has been a part of me and I'm thankful to my mother who passed it on as I passed it on my children. God is in control. I just pray her family will honor her by not fighting over money. She deserves the very best support from her family. It would have been an honor to hear her sing at the Inaugural Ball. Yet there is great honor in Beyonce's portrayal in the movie and the Inaugural. Etta's story and her music has inspired a new generation artists and fans. At this time in her life, I pray that she is surrounded with love, empathy and dignity. To God Be the Glory.
