Zoe Kravitz has been in the limelight since she was born, but in 2011, it may finally be her own. The daughter of famous parents - actress Lisa Bonet, singer/actor Lenny Kravitz - Zoe is finally making a pitch for her own type of recognition this year.
Things kicked off with a re-occurring guest role in the Showtime series, 'Californication,' in which she played, Pearl, a tough rocker-girl who entices Becca (one of the show's lead characters) to play in the fictional band, Queens of Dogtown. For Zoe, the role wasn't too much of a departure from her real life role as the lead-singer in the rock band, Elevator Flight.
Two upcoming films in which Zoe does do a 180 from who she is in real life, are also drastically different from one another. The first and better-known role will be in this summer's expected blockbuster, 'X-Men: First Class.' Zoe plays an insect winged mutant named Angel (she appears in the film's trailer at 0:54). The other role is as Sweetness O'Hara in the film, 'Yelling To The Sky.'
The film, which is currently making the run on the film festival circuit, tells the story of Sweetness, a young girl in high school being bullied by Latonya Williams (played by Gabourey Sidibe). Check out Zoe in trailers for both films below.

Those movie clips look great. This does look like a great year for Zoe. I saw all of the previous Ex-Men movies and this one looks dynomite. Hopefully Zoe will have to type of career her mom was supposed to have.

Zoe is light skinned, bi-racial. It's no wonder she's hired, while dark skinned, brown skinned black women can't get a hello from Hollywood.

How is she bi-racial? Her mother is, and her father black? Do you know the difference?

Um...did you not see all the other black actors and actresses in that clip. What is your definition of "black"? Cuz if Gabourey Sidibie is not black enough for you then I don't know to tell you.

You are so right....all women in the entertainment biz that's making big, big money are bi-racial or look bi-racial...and yes her parents are Black, but her parents are bi-racial too......
The rule goes if you are lighter than a paper bag...you are in!....
Look at the BIG, BIG money makers....Sade, Beyonce, Halle Berry, Zoe in Avatar, Kerr Hilson, Corrinne bailey rae, Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis, Rhianna, and the list goes on and on...
What a shame...lots of talented dark skin Black women do not get a break...and when they do get a little break...they are portrayed as "Loud, Ghetto" Ugly, Arugmental, bossy etc. or they give them non-hit songs to sing..
And what's even sadder is the Black men in positions, hire mostly Bi-racial or light skin Black women.....they are racist and verbally "nasty" against their own kind....sometimes they get in the media and dis-respect BW...especially dark skinned BW.
I love Tyler Perry, but he sometimes he portray BW as loud mouth, bossy, arugmental, hard to get alone with their mate etc....
It's very Sad.....

Sorry, Gary! Lisa Bonet's Mother is white and her father was black. Lenny Kravitz mother was black and his father was a white Jewish man. Hint: Kravitz is his last name. So, technically she is still considered bi-racial. You're wrong! It really doesn't matter though. The thing is it's true about the type of roles available to black, dark-skinned females. There are a few you see in what are known as "black films" made by black people.
But, the only ones in films made by white people are the ones being portrayed in a negative manner. They act like Halle Berry, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Zoe Saldana, Paula Patton, and goodness that Rhianna, in movies like there are no other talented women "of color" in Hollywood. You mention Gabourey Sidibe! Yeah, and what is she portraying, the big black bully, no doubt a reference to being jealous.
Which is the popular thing to say when you want to bury your head in the sand and stay in denial. It's time to stop being angered by the truth being spoken. What about all of the hate that comes to dark-skinned black people? The constant references to monkeys, nappy head ho's, black this or that, and being called ugly? Why must black precede every negative name they are called? It isn't just light-skinned black or bi-racial women facing hatred!
Sometimes, it isn't about jealous. Sometimes, those women can be very nasty towards those who are dark-skinned. And, dark-skinned black males aren't making it any better. These women aren't being treated any better by them. So, their excuse that it's because of the type of women black women are is a lie. Otherwise, why are they cheating, abusing, or murdering the non-black women they are with? See, ladies it wasn't the women after all. They need to simply state the truth. They hate themselves and how they look. This thing makes them feel better about themselves because to be with someone the white world accepts and considers beautiful.
They think will somehow make them acceptable too. And, it simply is not so. How can you have a preference for women who don't look like yourself, your Mother, your sisters, your Aunt's? That is nothing more than self-hate. Black women are bleaching their skin, wearing long weaves and everything else trying to look beautiful to their counterparts. Because, this was what they were attracted to.
And, yet they still are made fun of now by the very men who so-called couldn't deal with black woman and their "nappy/kinky" hair. It isn't hating it's the truth. It's just sad that black people of all shades and bi-racial people can't come together and stop the divisions. This type of thing has been perpetuated since slavery, Willie Lynch plans, and from many dark-skinned black families and those passing for white. Just the fact that you talk about it doesn't make you jealous or a hater.
But, what would you expect a demographic of people who are constantly being shown they do not exist or are not good enough to be desired or given the opportunity to act in film. With all due respect to the bi-racial actresses, those who are dark-skinned are far superior in their acting talent for real. And, before you call me jealous. I happen to be bi-racial myself! I'm just not in denial about what I see dark-skinned women going through.
