If you're an independent or aspiring filmmaker, it's no longer enough to be good at your craft. In the digital age, where content reigns supreme and the lines between advertiser and distributor are blurring, you need to build your own audience well before you go knocking on Hollywood's door.
At least, that was a common belief among the experts who gathered during the 2011 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) held recently in Miami. For all you filmmakers out there pounding the pavement, here are three commandments to help you break ground:
No. 1: Thou shalt understand the game has changed
Black filmmaking hit its peak in the '90s, when movies with predominantly African American casts and storylines were more abundant (see: 'Boyz n the Hood,' 'Love Jones,' 'The Best Man,' 'Set it Off'). During the festival, several prominent actors and filmmakers spoke out about the mere two studios that tend to distribute black film: Lionsgate (which has an exclusive partnership with Tyler Perry and has brought a number of his films, including the Madea franchise, to the big screen) and Sony Pictures ('Jumping the Broom,' 'The Karate Kid' -- the one with Jaden Smith).
This means black actors are vying for a limited number of roles each year that are created with multicultural characters in mind, and with that, there's a limited number of options for African American audiences who are looking for more relatable storytelling. If you understand how the game has changed, then you can work to change the game.
No. 2: Thou shalt see thyself as a content creator
Whether your craft is acting, directing, producing or some combination, you hereby have the right to see yourself as a content creator. What does this mean? This means you think more broadly about your creative product and you how it can be adapted across any screen-whether web, social, video or mobile.
There's an explosion of brand integrations (consider the number of brands you see in music videos, TV programs, as well as the sponsors who are weaved into the blogs you read), and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Viewers will always want to see engaging content, and they're willing to watch it on just about any screen - whether it's online, on their smartphone, or on the big screen. Actor Laz Alonso (pictured above with Mekhi Pfifer) touched on this in a one-on-one discussion hosted by Rolling Out and sponsored by Cadillac. "The ones who truly excel in this business are the ones who create content, and the more opportunities you have to create the content, the more opportunities you have to own it."
Meanwhile, brands want to be attached to engaging content that attracts an audience. Demonstrate that you can effectively build and engage audiences and the path to distribution will follow. That said...

No. 3: Thou shalt embrace social media
Social media has been a game changer for the movie business. Hollywood has taken notice, with some directors holding auditions through digital media platforms, as in the case with Mila Kunis, who landed a starring role in 'Black Swan' after she auditioned via Skype. In an ABFF panel discussion on digital distribution, Codeblack entertainment President Jeff Clanagan shared how the upcoming release of 'Laugh at My Pain,' based on a 90-city tour with comedian Kevin Hart (pictured above), took in $15 million in ticket sales. One of the most successful comedy concerts in history, the marketing effort was driven primarily through Kevin's own promotion with his fans through Facebook and Twitter.
Writer/director Qasim 'Q' Basir, whose debut feature film 'Mooz-lum' starred actors Nia Long, Evan Ross, Danny Glover and Roger Guenveur Smith - is currently working on his second project, 'Destined.' Although slated for release next year, the film is already engaging with viewers via an official Facebook page based off the strength of the fan base he built with his first release. Today, web savvy is absolutely essential.
If you follow these commandments, then Hollywood will come knocking on your door.

This year was my first ever attendance at the ABFF. I wasn't quite sure what to expect or whether or not the cost of attendance would be worth it. It definitely was. With one feature credit under my belt as the Writer/Director of Periods of Rain, I wasn't sure how to navigate the landscape of festival goers who were a.) already established, b.) those who have yet to even put their toe in the water, and c.) people who have no industry aspirations but enjoy the film screenings. Robert Townsend said it best when he stated that technology has created many more opportunities for getting our work out there than ever before. With a reasonably priced digital camera, sound equipment and lighting, along with a great script, actors and crew of course, you can put together a good movie, short or webisode. You don't have to wait on someone else to provide the magic key. Just be willing to take charge of your destiny and collaborate/assist others in getting to where they're trying to go. You'll find that helping others also helps you.

This was my first time attending the festival, too. I didn't know what to expect, but like you pointed out, I wasn't quite sure how to navigate such varying audiences who were there for many different reasons. I did come away with some really good connections, and I hope you did too.
Robert Townsend's session on how to pitch was a highlight for me. Not sure if you attended that.
So what are you working on next?

First Kevin hart was excellent as host of BET Awards! Bring him back next year. Next word of mouth sold out his tour especially at Ohio State where my baby just graduated and called me raving about Kevin. Thx Usher! My baby saw you in B more (tell mom thx) and in college! HOLLA old man! LOL
Don't get me started on Hollywood. It's not based on talent. It's nepotism and who you know not what you know. Funny most of the people listed in the above article would hire their untalented friend (or ignorant reality star) or family member over someone who has EARNED the right to have the opportunity!!!
Black Hollywood has disappointed me. Now we attack Spike Lee (LOVED Inside Man) because he chose not to put on a dress for laughs and try to create movies that make up think. I like Tyler Perry but black folks have lazy brains lately!!!!

Knowledge,
I'm not sure if you're a filmmaker, but I hope you wouldn't let nepotism and favoritism deter you from pursuing your dreams. I worked in marketing & PR within the advertising business for several years before transitioning to filmmaking, and I can tell you there is some of that in every business you encounter. A lot of us share your disappointment with the lack of diversity in Hollywood; it's why we continue to push for new talent and new perspectives to help tell our stories.

@Alysha-No I'm not a filmmaker I just know a very talented passionate person who has let bitterness and anger cause her to quit. Talented people aren't getting the opportunties in Hollywood. Black people support too much bullsh@ over raw talent. Thats why I crack the joke to win an Oscar in the black community become a singer, rapper, comic or former model!!!!

I whole-heartedly agree with Alysha. Standing on the side lines complaining that the game is not being played fairly doesn't accomplish anything other than continuing to keep us out of the game. We all know that talent isn't the only key to having a successful career in the industry. I've watched other people with the right connections but far less talent and creativity move to the head of line plenty of times. But that can never be an excuse for me not to continue "showing up."
I attended Robert Townsend's ptching session as well. It was very informative and enlightening, especially the reminder about self-sabotage. Imagine that. We don't need other people to check(block) us, we do a good job of it ourselves. That's good food for thought.

ABFF has been logistically better and as an Alum I was disappointed in the way the screenings were scheduled. I was upset because there were such amazing films selected and not everyone who paid or were ABFF stalwarts (my 5th) could see them all. The Boot Camps and dialogues are the gem of Festival - never do you have an oppotuntity to learn from the boldest and the best. Also 25 years after my first film I can still connect with filmmakers who started the game and learn from amazing fillmakers who I advised. As long as ABFF keeps the family feel it will always be very special. We don't need celeb entourages and fighting outside of screenings - we need to get back being about to speak to each other whether I am in front of the camera, behind the scenes or supporting in theaters. It is still the best of Black Film - let's just make sure we keep it real. I am so proud of Jeff Friday being the largest distributor of Black Films not having to be surrounded by bodyguards at his 15th Year Anniversary. ABFF is ideal for the lover of film and I will keep supporter but let us keep it cozy, friendly and featuring the best in Black Cinema.

REMEDYS FOR PAYMENT OF VIOLATIONS
1. Mental Anguish and Distress, . . . an award of mental anguish will survive a legal sufficiency challenge when the plaintiffs have introduced direct evidence of the nature, duration and severity of their mental anguish, thus establishing a substantial disruption in the plaintiff's daily routine. Such evidence, whether in the form of the claimants own testimony, that of third parties, or that of experts, is more likely to provide the fact finders with adequate details to assess mental anguish claims. Although we stop short of requiring this type of evidence in all casesin which mental anguish damages are sought, the absence of this type of evidence, particularly when it can be really supplied or procured by the plaintiff justifies close judicial scrutiny of the evidence offered on this element of damages. (p. 444). (Emphasis supplied).

2. Plaintiffs have been stalked from state to state with the Defendants renting apartments around
him and his family as they daily hack on his computers and reroute his telephone calls, and each time he or his family leaves the house Military and Police personnel chase them, in an interstate stalking method. Police reports in every State including talking to Atlanta's Police Chief Turner who is also aware of these agencies running around invading my privacy and life. ( Police reports attached exhibits)
3. Plaintiff has sent out over 3000 resumes and only 1 call was allowed in, and that was a company playing games for the Defendants, further felony actions interfering with Plaintiffs revenue and making it hard to take care of his family in the process. (online verifiable)
4. Plaintiffs have tainted all Court proceedings by using Clerks to write decisions of Judges,
Also illegal Court services were faked by the Defendants in faking service to the State of Illinois Lisa Madigan, which still has never been served and in all these years of filing has
never answered because they were never served or received any mail in any proceedings according to her office. Also changing a civil case to criminal actions. Including tainting the Supreme Court filings using Clerks ( Service document attached others verifiable online)
5. Plaintiff has Investigations started in Washington on these felonies and documents attached
to show, given to ATG. Eric Holder, US Senate, US Congress. (attached documents)
6. Police and Detectives all stated to Plaintiff that the actions were and are the Defendants and there is nothing they can do because they don't have that power, they are the low men on the food chain. (names are all to be on witness list which has 50 witnesses on it)
7. Plaintiff J.K. (minor) has been harassed and abused by people Defendants put her in care of
in order to keep Plaintiff in the State of Illinois and repeatedly made Plaintiffs wife file divorces keep Plaintiff in the State of Illinois, and erased the record of the abuse in Illinois DCFS Dept. in order to set up the Plaintiff while protecting the abusers, or paid witnesses of some actions they tried to set Plaintiff up with. And 2 years later I have had to take my
daughter to see a psycologist for the remaining memories of abuse due to the Illegal actions directly or indirectly stemming from Federal involvement.
8. Plaintiffs mail has been stolen and communications rerouted as the Defendants answer all

and it has been told to Plaintiffs by the Head of the DOJ, that there are no warrants for any such operations or investigation making all these actions felonies and unlawful.
12. Plaintiffs have also been told by law enforcement that these Government actions were told to be Investigations of some manner, but Investigations are not witch hunts or Civil Rights violating exhibitions that are also felonies under the law and each and every party involved in these felonies must be punished to the full extent of the law for Conspiracy type actions and over stepping bound in judicial matters that are to be left to Court proceedings, being that by law each and every case in any Court has the Right to a Fair trial and Court proceeding being Civil and or Criminal in nature.
13. Plaintiffs were evicted from Apartment because of Illegal actions by the Federal
employees at Belle Isle Apartments that moved in over night and told my management company to evict me and my family because of my website, I have it in a Police report and Affidavit of these Illegal criminal actions and the only ones who are affected by everyone knowing their every criminal move is Federal employees Military and Police, trying to commit crimes covertly, not with my long standing website about them, www.djusticeofone.wordpress.com
14. Plaintiffs were told by the US DOJ legal Dept. that these charges were supposed to
be taken care of and I was supposed to be awarded compensation 3 years ago, and the legal Rep. Also stated it is definitely the FBI causing my problems, and I am right to sue the DOJ but it is the FBI division that are committing the felony charges I claim.
Also the DOJ in Washington, stated every case filed against them is handled by the US Attorneys office in that state, so felonies happened in Atlanta, GA case, check it out no response or Attorney on record, it is again our Federal criminals abusing Power and hiding behind, the hope I do not know it is still them dictating the Illegal activity.

commission of a felony cognizable by a court of the United States, conceals and does not as soon as possible make known the same to some judge or other person in civil or military
