From Posterous:
You may want to brush up on your Othello before watching this performance. The piece is, in essence, a dialogue with Shakespeare's original play. And, although writer Toni Morrison would not call herself a feminist, the result of this dialogue is a womanist revision of the play's characters and the norms set by the era in which they lived. Morrison's masterful tracing of sly, systemic modes of enslavement--of women, of Africans, of "others" and "villains"--is carefully brought to the fore through a series of monologues delivered by Desdemona (played by Elizabeth Marvel) in the afterlife.

My daughter luvs Toni. The timing of this article is great because I was going to buy her one of those electronic book readers and gift card to download 7+ books. I remember how mad she was when Oprah ruined "Beloved." LOL Plus she studied Shakespeare for years.

@Luv Toni
Which one was annoyed at Oprah's movie? Wasn't quite sure whether you meant your daughter or,
Ms.Morrison? I hadn't realized Oprah came out here, to Pennsylvania to shoot film in both Philadelphia for the market scene and also because we have fields here in Lancaster with a very wide horizon, until it was all over and as I was a new resident at the time who came from Princeton.
I think it was a very big challenge for Oprah who had up close and at first hand had seen Spielberg produce and direct Alice Walker's,The Color Purple; a film which absolutely made me cry (and which has never happened before or since!)
The Oprah Winfrey production of Beloved did however introduce me to the acting of Thandie Newton, which was bone-chilling. I particularly liked Thandie Newton opposite David Thewlis in Bertolucci's film: Beseiged about African displacement in Europe and what music has to do with us humans.

I said "she" which means daughter. OMG don't tell her you think Thandie Newton can act and didn't ruin the movie. The one thing I'm learning is passionate book readers can take apart a movie if not done properly (poor casting as well)!!! My baby is passionate when books become movies. Well GREAT books!!! Who do you think explained Harry potter movies to me based on books? Can't believe my girls grew up with Pottter series and it's ended.
I was just informed she wants the Kindle e-reader! Book divas are a trip! hahahaha
