The last time this project and its cast were discussed here was back in November of last year at the old site; when Tambay reported Faith Evans would portray singer Florence Ballard in her big screen biopic. At the time, Taraji P. Henson was also rumored to have been offered the role of Diana Ross. Well now, it looks like both Evans and Henson are out of the picture.

So Flo introduced them to Motown. It was Diana who made them all stars and upped the paycheck for everyone at Motown. So don't try and make a introduction into being equal to singing lead on 12 number one hits. It wasn't Flo it was Diana. Also Flo never had the best voice. That lie was started by sour grapes Mary Wison in her bid to try to diminish Diana Ross. Just listen to Buttered Popcorn. Dreamgirls was filled with lies also. Politics politics and not much truth all around.

Jurnee Smollet was great in "Eves Bayou" and the "Great Debaters". I've also seen her in The "Defenders" and that series about the football players called Friday Night Lights? She's RANGE and she's a better choice than Faith because they need someone who can convincingly do the age variations. Jurnee can play a young and mature Flo Ballard. Jurnee is also current to fans and the media, Faith isn't.

Florence Ballard had a lot of drama going on in her personal life that kept her from accepting the blessings of being in the best female group back in the day and perhaps the best female group of all time. Groups go through lead changes all of the time and especially when it comes to the bottom dollar it's all about what the public wants. How many of you ever heard the song 'Buttered Popcorn'? Not many because fans didn't 'feel' Florence like that. Sad but true.
These ladies lived in the slums of Detroit during a time when either you made it big in sports or music. There was so much musical talent back then so much competition for consumer dollars.
Florence Ballard had the opportunity to give her family a financially carefree life but her mind refused to allow her to do that because it was either her way or the highway. Yet, when you've love ones depending on you, you get on that stage and blend into the back ground and suck it up because your blending means that your mom can now let someone take care of her after taking care of 15 children and dad could spend more time with the family instead of killing himself at a job that leads to nowhere except a broken back. Mary Wilson was logical because she didn’t allow her emotions to sideline her ability to take care of her family.
I believe Florence Ballard had an undiagnosed mental illness that prevented her from rationalizing and not coping with reality. The Supremes was a major group and their success was putting food on their families’ tables, clothes on their back and a way out of the slums. Yet, Florence Ballard’s feelings about Diana Ross and Berry Gordy took away the opportunities of a lifetime?
Florence Ballard's family basically controls her public image this is why it's not easy to find out the negative aspects of her personal life only the aspects of her professional life. I believe besides the rape, alcohol and heroin, Florence had also experienced abuse behind 'closed doors'. I believe her 'personal/private' life was far from supreme.
And I doubt if her family want ‘sensitive’ issues on the big screen and maybe that's why some 'real' actresses refuse to touch the movie because it's based on illusions not facts. No disrespect to Jurnee Smollet but she’s between obscure and OK. This role calls for a newbie with skills or a veteran with skills. A newbie would allow the focus to remain on the script and a vet will bring the script to life. Then again, maybe Smollet can pull it off. Either way before spending hard earned dough I’m waiting for the critics review. No, I’m not one of those black people who believe in supporting everything made by a black person and or staring black people.
Florence Ballard got the Primettes in the door but Diana Ross kept the Supremes in the door.

@ Addison, I feel what you are saying. But I think it's pathetic of her family to promote this " It's Diana and Berry's fault" mentality as an excuse for Diana , Berry, and others to keep their lives, livelihoods, and careers going instead of allowing Florence's tragic life to derail them. Diana had the drive and TALENT to make the Supremes number one. It's time for the Ballard family and the black community to stop the bashing.
